Title: Anyone get rhinoplasty covered by insurance due to deviated septum?
Post by: Debra on November 23, 2015, 07:53:15 AM
When I first transitioned, my voice teacher had me go to an ENT doc to have everything checked out. He confirmed I have a slight deviated septum and he mentioned that if I ever got my nose done, I may be able to get it covered under insurance because of that.

I was curious if anyone has been able to do that or tried to that?

For me, my passages were partially blocked and insurance paid the repair cost. The cosmetic part of the surgery I paid.

Insurance can cover functional part - septoplasty. Rhinoplasty is cosmetic procedure, and no chance of having that covered, unless if you have one of those rare insurances which include FFS. In that case you could claim, that feminizing rhinoplasty is essential for your mental health and well-being, much like one could claim that for other FFS procedures.

I had a deviated septum and my insurance covered corrective rhinoplasty.  Best thing to do is have your surgeon get a pre-approval from your health insurance.

I had a deviated septum and collapsed nasal valves and got my insurance to cover the cost.  My doctor made sure that he had pre-approval from my insurance company.

So I asked one of the surgeons about this and they made a good point....that the insurance is most likely going to ask why I'm not picking a doctor much closer to home for fixing the deviated septum. So not sure I'll even try that....but I was curious.

my US$.02 worth, it is still worth asking insurance.  it is your decision which surgeon you use.

FWIW, when I tried to pre-approve my FFS with Dr Rossi the insurance turned it down because the procedures were outside the US, the did not even state whether they would cover it under my insurance.

A friend of mine had done rhinoplasty surgery from Rhinoplasty Centre in Toronto a year ago. I think he got insurance to cover the cost, but I'm not sure. Will let you know about it once I get in contact with him.
