Title: Cult Classics We Love
Post by: V M on September 10, 2016, 05:47:41 AM
The other night I was watching the original MAD MAX with Mel Gibson and marveled at how young and original he was

Ah, there is nothing like the original, sure there are films that have sequels that are almost just as thrilling, but how often do you watch a sequel of a film and think "Yeesh!!! How much cheese can they throw on this one?"

So what are some of your favorite Cult Classic films?

I just watched the Origional Mad Max again last weekend ha.
Titanic if you wana cry, something about the eariness of it just gives me chills, so sad too, cry every time.
Scarface too is insane, pretty much anything Tarantino is amasing.
Funny what you said about the sequels usually being crap, I love the second Terminator, more than the first.
Die hard become ->-bleeped-<-e as it goes on.
Braveheart is also a classic I love, alot people cry about the factuality of it all, it is a film in the end of the day.
Thers tones more I cant remember

I just dragged my wife through "The Blood of Heroes," with Rutger Hauer, her first, probably my 10th viewing.
She almost took away my lifetime movie selection privilege after "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," which is kind of achingly sad but oh so delicious.  (Who doesn't love Rex Harrison?)

Speaking of Rutger Hauer, Who here remembers Blade Runner with Harrison Ford? Now there's one for the books

Ah yes, loved the Rocky Horror Picture Show, people dressing up and acting out the parts - The food fights would get a bit crazy though

Does anyone remember The Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knotts?

I love Don Knotts movies; my favorite is The Love God, and a trans actress plays the part of one of his "bunny" companions.

Yes, I actually watched it again not long ago. It's one of my favorite Don Knotts movies.

I like Lost Boys, Fight Club, and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.

Strangely enough, I discovered The Ghost and Mr. Chicken when I was home sick from school as a child and noticed it would almost always be on when I was out sick

I would be laying on the couch trippin' on flu med.s and watching all kinds of reruns

Zardoz.  It is a little known futuristic dystopian film starring Sean Connery and Charlotte Rampling from the 70's shot in beautiful rural Scotland.  It's one of my favorite movies.  Few people know of it but it does have a cult following.  You can buy it on Amazon in DVD format.

Also, anything by Stanley Kubrick.  2001: A Space Odyssey and Dr. Stangelove are my absolute favorites.

Something that touches a theme of struggle with the world and its often unfair treatment of those who are different.  Werner Herzog made a number of films that I like.   My favorite, commonly known as "Enigma of Kaspar Hauser" but actual title in German, Jeder für sich und Gott gegen alle; lit. Each for Himself and God Against All. It is a very beautiful film set in the 19th century depicting the attempted socialization of a wild child starting in his mid 20's and all the comedy and eventual horrors that follow.

Earth vs. the Flying Scaucers, The Day the Earth Stood Still; SciFi classics from the 50's.

Older films:  Casa Blanca,  The Big Sleep and almost anything else featuring Bogie.

And lots more...

They did the same thing in Toronto for REPO! The Genetic Opera when that came out. I even ended up making a few costumes for people to attend various shadow casts from Toronto to Texas. Good times. ^.^

Lately I've been on a huge kick for silly horror comedies form New Zealand like What We Do In The Shadows and Housebound.

As for classic cult films, I still ADORE the Mad Max series (hence custom title) Ridley Scott's LEGEND (inspired the video game series Legend of Zelda :3 ) American Psycho, The Crow, The Boondock Saints series <3 Gee I could go on forever..

I LOVE Repo the Genetic Opera. I used to play Nathan/Repo Man in my local shadowcast... I spent a lot of money on that costume to make it screen accurate as possible. I miss that part. We just started bringing Repo back to Long Island, sadly my friend who directs is dead set on playing Repo himself, so I'm only an extra for now, but I do get to be the Band Leader at the start of the Opera towards the end, so I get to jump around like a maniac and have some fun.

Oops, hit post too quickly. I also am madly in love with Rocky Horror, I'm involved in a Rocky Horror shadowcast as well, playing the Criminologist for now, although I always wanted to play Eddie in the past. Now I think it would be more fun to be Frank.

I agree that Blade Runner, Nearly everything by Kubrkick, and wow a couple shout outs for the positive mention of Repo The Genetic Opera, which are superb examples of the art of movie making.

I just finished re-watching David Lynch's Mulholland Drive from 2001 in an attempt to figure out how many story lines he could have included.  I am still not sure how many are intended or imagined.

Sunset Boulevard from 1950 is still amazing every time I re-watch it.

I may have a bit of Noir film preference.

Mmmm another nice topic!

I've been a little under the weather and I watched Clint Eastwood in: High Plain Drifter, Pale Rider, A Fist full of Dollars, A Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Some nasty scenes as I realised how movies (and I have changed) the gratuitous rape in HPD and the ignorance of what it meant was disturbing, but I may have missed the point, it is a hard film to decipher at times.

The message that guns cure everything - but not in TGTB&TU - I think that is probably the best film of the Western genre I have seen.

Eastwood is a good director and a bad actor!

I always figured he had "returned" (not sure if supernaturally or what) to punish the town and everyone in it for what they did. Definitely not a good guy but there to make the entire town uneasy before going all out on it. Weird film in that respect, as you are not sure who the hell to root for.

The rape at the start makes sure you know right away Eastwood isn't the hero or a gentleman. The tension in the film comes mostly from the oppressive atmosphere and wondering what will happen, so I kinda like it (first watching not knowing being the best). It's not nice but it is 'different' and the fact it's open for interpretation meant it's one that stuck in my head down the years.

Only love for The Good The Bad and the Ugly though. A true Western Epic. I'm not even big on the genre but that film is a masterpiece.

I never find rape to be acceptable behavior either but basically he returns to mete out his revenge on the town for the rape and murder of his wife and family while he was sheriff

Howard the Duck
Army of Darkness
Weird Science
Killer Clowns From Outer Space

All are a laugh riot in my opinion. I remember sneaking out of my bedroom when I was 5 to go downstairs to see Killer Clowns. It was around midnight and I didn't want my parents to know I was up, so I kept the light off and the volume low. I also remember laughing my ass off thru the whole thing. I was, and still am, a morbid little girl.

I also laugh like crazy at slasher flicks. Jason cracks me up every time, mainly because it's the same damn thing every time!

Another one that is hilarious is From Dusk Til Dawn. So cheesy. It sucks so bad it's actually good.

Maybe I'm crazy.

Fantastic planet. I came across this movie by accident. It was made in the 70s I think. It's animated but definitely not for children. It's a trip! It's about these gigantic aliens who keep humans as pets. It sounds totally cheesy I know but it's really not. I like it because it's very dark for an animated movie made way back then.

Another totally weird movie is THX1138. It's also really old and it's made by that guy who made star wars. It's a really trippy movie. It's one of those movies that really doesn't explain a lot of stuff so you interpret it yourself. It's basically about a future where everyone is required by law to take drugs daily and stay stoned. This one couple goes off the drugs and starts having sex, which is illegal and punishable by death. Again, sounds cheesy but it's not. I totally care nothing about cars but even I found the car chase scenes cool though I can't imagine what kind of cars they used because they looked really weird.

I like watching old sci-fi movies because it's impressive to me how well some of the special effects are done at a time when they had no CGI.

Gosh I was the same. I watched that movie a huge number of times as a kid. And Grease, too.

I'm kind of a fan of 80's movies. They had something about them.

A few of my favourites are, in no partcular order:

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Legend
Labyrinth
The Neverending Story
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Uncle Buck
The Great Outdoors
Planes, Trains and Automobiles

And pretty much anything else with John Candy in.

Fantastic Planet was a trippy movie and most people I knew had to be stoned to watch it.  Kinda like Fritz the Cat, lol.

I'm fortunate enough to have all the Universal monster movies; original Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, etc.  Black & White movies tend to have more of an "edge" to them.

Years ago, I started collecting movies on VHS - What?  VHS, what is that?????

Then I transferred them to DVD before the VHS life expectancy (20 years) foiled my collection.

Then I put them on an external disk drive, one of many I now have but it's so much easier plugging an XHD into a BlueRay player and going right to the movie versus looking thru hundreds of DVDs.

The cars were real and they were a Lola T-70 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lola_T70). The 50's through the 70's saw some real innovations and original ideas in car design that pretty much ended when the safety standards restricted car design.

As horror is the genre most closely associated with cult classics, Evil Dead 2 wins out every time for cult films in my book. ;D

Honorable mentions: Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, Re-Animator and all of the assembled Lovecraft inspired movies that almost always had Jeffery Combs, Bubba Ho-Tep (there's a Bruce Campbell theme to my movie choice ;D), Event Horizon(it's a really good bad movie), anything by John Carpenter with special shout out to They Live.

Skipping the most obvious long running franchises that got ran into the ground and then trampled by a stampede of elephants being chased by Bigfoot (the monster truck, not the sasquatch) who was being driven by Hulk Hogan on flakka. I'm looking at you Wes Craven's ghost.

I like your taste in films, Steph. I grew up in a family that was movie-crazy; we've all got the bug.

I can't answer the question posed without a *lot* of thought. I've been collecting films on DVD for about 16 years or so, and had a VHS collection before that. My library is subdivided by genre, and I've got a shelf for classic sci-fi. I like Kubrick, too; but I saw "A Clockwork Orange" when I shouldn't have -- too young -- and was deeply disturbed by it. I can't watch it again. I tried a few years ago and ended up turning it off. The home invasion scene turns my stomach.

As an interesting side note: I was mesmerized by lesbian film -- the real thing, not the stuff made for men -- since first seeing John Sayles' "Lianna" (1983) in the early 1990s. Lesbian films affected me deeply in a way I did not understand. Now that I've come out to myself as a gay trans girl, the reason's obvious.

One reason I liked it was because it has kind of a trans undercurrent. The main character, Ruth, is a CIS woman but she's 6 feet tall, big, ugly and masculine looking. Her husband treats her like crap and leaves her for a smaller prettier woman. So she goes on this years long journey of surgery to make her look smaller and prettier. She even had surgery on her arms and legs to make her shorter. It was an awesome series. I don't know how old it is. I ran across it like 2 years ago.

Red Sonja - obviously!

But I also love many many others, including Blade Runner - Rachel was the only other name that came close to my choosing. I love her character & her name, and I think she's gorgeous.

Sonja.

Xena, Xena, Xena!!!!!

I've seen that. I also saw those old hercules shows. I liked hercules better. The guy who played hercules was cute and had a nice body. I will watch stuff that's less than Oscar material if it has hot guys in it. Magic mike was an awful movie but I've seen it 3 times. Lol

A fun movie you might consider watching is this 1993 film starring Corey Haim,

Just One of the Girls.

I'm real big into "cult" sorts of movies. Here's a handful of favorites:

Angel's Egg
Dead Ringers
The Sweet Hereafter
The Cremator
Happiness (1998)
Lovely and Amazing
The Holy Mountain
Cat Soup (2001)
A Snake of June
Parents (1989)
Show Me Love
Le Manifique (The Man From Acapulco)
Colossal
Never Let Me Go

Cool -but have never heard of any of them.

The Puppet Master series is pretty good.

Cool!

There are two on this list that I own on DVD. "Parents" is disgusting; I must have been in a really perverse mood when I picked it up. "Show Me Love" aka "F***ing Amal" is a beautiful film that touched my heart.

"Dead Ringers" sounds familiar; but I'm sure I've never seen it. I've never even heard of the others. Wow.

A lot of the ones I listed are purposely obscure. I just took it from an old list I'd made of underrated/underseen gems. Dead Ringers is my favorite David Cronenberg movie, but I like just about all of his stuff quite a bit. I love body horror.

Performance - what a strange film. Reminds me of the house of some people my parents knew. A bunch of very odd hippies. I remember trying fly argaric tea with such people once myself, but like most drugs it had a minimal effect on me...

Withnail and I.

Good god, it's a bit too close to home these days. I see unpleasant amounts of myself in it. I need to get my act together.
