Killing of Georgie Rod Stewart Not really a favorite just profound for the times we live in.
Dude looks like a lady- Aerosmith :v
Not really for me but funny when you think of it transitionwise
Let it go- Frozen
Lola- the kinks
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/kinks/lola.html
...probably one of the most beautiful songs about a transgender woman
"Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola...Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man"
These ones are more personal, though:
Ordinary man- Breaking Benjamin

This is gospel- Panic! At the disco

"I dont want to be here anymore" and "Black masks and gasoline" - Rise against

I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna be terrible again.
Look out everyone, Crystal's being terrible.
It's gonna happen. It's about to happen.
Offensiveness incoming, it's gonna be real bad.
You were warned.
Oh boy, here I go bein' terrible again!
NOFX - My Vagina (https://youtu.be/6FEOeQZmnAo)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FEOeQZmnAo
It's pretty offensive, but I got really interested when I heard this song...
"Twinkle" by Girls' Generation:
"Can't hide this twinkle deep inside
Even though I may try.
You'll never hide this light of mine
I'm gonna twinkle til I die."
...
And even when the sun goes down,
I'll always shine through the night
Don't you ever close your eyes
Watch me come alive
The lyrics ring true for me, because I've always had this 'twinkle' inside of me. And throughout my life, no matter how hard I tried to hide it, or deny it, it was always there. But now that I'm released, I'm free to be who I really am. I'm truly alive for the first time. And no matter how hard the world may try to snuff it out, my 'twinkle' will shine forever!
It's a Korean pop song, but this English cover is really good!!!

Another Girl, Another Planet by The Only Ones. Also covered by Blink-182, very faithful to the original.
B
Not really songs about transition, but Dio had a couple lyrics in one of his songs that I now see as potentially being references to transgender issues.
Then another song that I can never remember the name of includes a line saying:
"He was just eighteen and in between
a lady and a man
His daddy's girl in momma's world
that was when he ran
He never was confused, just been abused
but that's just what he was
And in the spark inside the dark
the answer came because it said"
Looking for it, the song is "Invisible"

This is an oldie, from 1921, but I cannot think of a more appropriate song for transition.
It is "There'll Be Some Changes Made" The lyrics start:
"There'll be a change in the weather and a change in the scene,
From now on there'll be a change in me
My walk will be different, my talk and my name
Ain't nothing 'bout me gonna be the same..."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm-EJrqBPks
I love this song: Who I Am by Aradhana Silvermoon. It speaks to me and my transition. The first time I heard it, I thought she must be trans, but she's not (at least I don't think so). Love her voice, it reminds me of Stevie Nicks.

Funny story - My wife and I were going to the movies one night recently and I don't remember if it was Lou Reed's 'Take a walk on the wild side' or Aerosmith's 'Dude (Looks Like a Lady)' came on and she was happily singing along then in the middle of the song she stopped singing, looked at me and said "Oh my God. Do you want me to change it?"
- At that point I think she understood a little more about me.
Have You Ever by The Offspring might not be specifically about this but it always resonated with me.
QuoteHave you ever buried your face in your hands
Cause no one around you understands
Or has the slightest idea what it is that makes you be
Have you ever felt like there was more
Like someone else was keeping score
And what could make you whole was simply out of reach
Well I know
Someday I'll try again and not pretend
This time forever
Someday I'll get it straight but not today
Have you ever

Now, it's intent is not about transition, but rather the next step in human evolution. But still, there are a lot of comparable bits I think.

These are some very interesting choices that I didn't know existed, lol. Since the song came out, I have been embarrassed inside because "I feel like a woman" by Shania Twain has been one of my very favorites. Hard to explain that you "just like the song" to a bunch guys. But it has always brought out the longing in me for the lady side of life and now its actually happening. Feeling so blessed! (except on the dysphoria days ;) )

I Enjoy Being A Girl
Peggy Lee
I'm a girl and by me that's only great
I am proud that my silhouette is curvy
that I walk with a sweet and girlish gait
With my hips kind of swivelly and swervey
I adore being dressed in something frilly
When my date comes to get me at my place
Out I go with my Joe or John or Billy
Like a filly who is ready for the race
When I have a brand new hairdo
With my eyelashes all in curls
I float as the clouds on air do
I enjoy being a girl
When men say I'm cute and funny
And my teeth aren't teeth but pearls
I just lap it up like honey
I enjoy being a girl
I flip when a fellow sends me flowers
I drool over dresses made of lace
I talk on the telephone for hours
with a pound and a half of cream upon my face
I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
who'll enjoy being a guy, having a girl like me
When men say I'm sweet as candy
As around in a dance we whirl
It goes to my head like brandy
I enjoy being a girl
With someone with eyes that smolder
Says he loves every silken curl
That falls on my ivory shoulder
I enjoy being a girl
When I hear a complementary whistle
That greets my bikini by the sea
I turn and I glower and I gristle
But I'm happy to know the whistles meant for me
I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
who'll enjoy being a guy, having a girl like me

Oh, just about any song from Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I don't want to ruin the good music on this thread but, I cant believe that nobody has mentioned the first verse of Walk on The Wild Side - Lou Reed. Sure, its a bit risque but, its actually a pretty good track.

The Killers Hot Fuss was a fav of mine during transition and "somebody Told Me" stood out. I loved "Well somebody told me you had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend I had in February of last year". I realize FtM more but I loved the gender fluid acknowledgement.
I obsessively listened to Long, Long, Long by the Beatles. I recommend that you guys give it a listen - it is from the White Album and the lyrics really resonate with me and my transition, it talks about finding somebody that you have been looking for after a long time - that person in my case being female me.
I also love Pretty Pimpin by Kurt Vile - the song is about looking in the mirror and not recognising the reflection and disconnection in general.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXdNnw99-Ic
Does any of this sound familiar?
And did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
I realize this is more about cross-dressing, but I've always related to this song.

Nine Inch Nails - You Know What You Are
Caution: Explicit Lyrics
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nineinchnails/youknowwhatyouare.html
I'm going to put this up because it really meant a lot to me right after I came out. I listened to it a lot back then. I realized then that so much about transition is about time. To me the song speaks to the regret I feel for every single hour I wasted putting off my transition.
"Hours are like diamonds. Don't let em' waste."

Okay Jane....I wanna play!
The WHO "Bargain"
These lyrics totally speak to me.....
I'd gladly lose me to find you
I'd gladly give up all I had
To find you I'd suffer anything and be glad
I'd pay any price just to get you
I'd work all my life and I will
To win you I'd stand naked, stoned and stabbed
I'd call that a bargain
The best I ever had
The best I ever had
I'd gladly lose me to find you
I'd gladly give up all I got
To catch you I'm gonna run and never stop
I'd pay any price just to win you
Surrender my good life for bad
To find you I'm gonna drown an unsung man
I'd call that a bargain
The best I ever had
The best I ever had
I sit looking 'round
I look at my face in the mirror
I know I'm worth nothing without you
And like one and one don't make two
One and one make one
And I'm looking for that free ride to me
I'm looking for you
I'm not sure why, but the Who's Quadrophenia immediately came to mind when I saw this topic. It was my favorite back when it came out, and then came back to life for me about the time I began experiencing feelings of female envy. The whole album is about searching, confusion, and eventually finding oneself. Not TG but can be applied there. Bell Boy and Love Reign O'er Me are the best songs.

Metamorphosis by Blue Stahli.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtGA-xcL958&sns=em
I feel it right at the heart of me
and it grips me physically
Dragging down so far below
And it's a violent vertigo
Digging it in like a parasite
Feeding off what I keep inside
Manifest when I'm throwing trust
To the cold and the nebulous
Something's changing
Re-arranging me
Just beginning
my own surgery
I'll cut away everything
And tear away everything
Confining
Defining
I'll cut away everything
And tear away everything
And I'll escape myself
I cast off what it means to be
Ruled by the happening
Moving past the experience
Never dwell on the evidence
Breaking it off of the identity
I come and kill it when I contravene
I'm dissolving all of this
In the full metamorphosis
Something's changing
Re-arranging me
Amputating
what I no longer need
A lot of the lyrics remind me of the struggle with dysphoria, especially in the first couple lines. The rest I imagine are about shedding your old identity and the physical and/or metaphorical surgery needed to leave behind the dysphoria with your old identity which I can relate to with transitioning.
I got my username, Contravene, from the song since I was listening to it when I signed up here and I've always had some of the lyrics as a quote in my profile.
His songs in general is usually pretty powerful and nefarious sounding which is what I love about them but this one struck a chord with me when I got to thinking about it.
What I hear when I listen to this song, is to always be both honest & true to yourself whether people like it or not.

Good one. I like this Stevie Nicks song too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_1kqijkSV4
It's a later version of Rhiannon with the line:
"Once in a million years a lady like her rises"
I associate it with the sheer improbability and wonder of being able to actually transition and how all the stars finally aligned for me in this place and time and what a rare and special gift transition is. Something I used to never even dream would ever be possible even in a million years. And yet here I am. Changing.
The trailer for "The Greatest Showman" has a song from Keala Settle "This is Me" that has some transition themed lyrics. The full song hasn't been released yet and you can only hear it on the trailer for now. But it made me notice.
QuoteSnippet:
[Verse]
I'm not a stranger to the dark
Don't hide away, be safe
'Cause we don't want your broken parts
[Chorus]
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies
[Post-Chorus]
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
[Chorus]
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies
This is me
Look out 'cause here I come (oh-oh-oh-oh)
Marching on, marching, marching on (oh-oh-oh-oh)
I'm not scared to be seen (oh-oh-oh-oh)
I make no apologies (oh-oh-oh-oh)

Phil Collins - We Said Hello Goodbye

(I'm reviving this thread a little, if that's okay)
"I want to break free" by Queens. It's also my favourite song by them.
"Anima" by Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows. More for mtf though, very strong lyrics too.
"When you don't see me" by Sisters of Mercy.
and I'm surprised no one's mentioned "Candy says" by The Velvet Underground, yet. It's a sad song, but I think it's beautiful too in a way.
My favorite will always be Christina Aguilera's cover of "Reflection" from Mulan :)
Stan Bush - The Journey. I love Stan Bush.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRtyZiwg-5g
I am sure some of the lyrics in Dokken - Breaking the chains, could be construed as transition related, but then there are so many other songs that could be construed the same way.
Ever since I committed to transition and srs I heard in the back of my mind, "Can't you see", by the Marshal Tucker Band.
The lyrics, "Can't you see, can't you see, what that woman is doing to me?". I heard it right up until they rolled me into surgery......haven't heard it since then.

No one for Fireworks by Katie Perry? That video made me get choked up in my man suit when it came out.
You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman
Aretha Franklin
Looking out on the morning rain
I used to feel so uninspired
And when I knew I had to face another day
Lord, it made me feel so tired
Before the day I met you, life was so unkind
But your the key to my peace of mind
'Cause you make me feel,
You make me feel,
You make me feel like
A natural woman
When my soul was in the lost and found
You came along to claim it
I didn't know just what was wrong with me
Till your kiss helped me name it
Now I'm no longer doubtful, of what I'm living for
And if I make you happy I don't need to do more
'Cause you make me feel,
You make me feel,
You make me feel like
A natural woman
Oh, baby,...

Not sure if this counts but I think it could be interpreted as a transition song.

This Tracy Chapman song has been resonating with me a lot lately.

And I've always like this Mary Chapin Carpenter song. There are parts of it I can relate to in terms of transitioning:

My apologies if the ad is there. Don't know how to strip them off. :embarrassed:
Interesting that this old thread got revived just as I was talking about a transition-themed song that inspired me, in another thread.
The song is "Whitewater", by Irish-Canadian singer-songwrites Eileen McGann, off a CD called "Turn it Around". It is ostensibly about canoeing, but, when I heard her sing the song in concert, she mentioned that is was intended to be about a transition. The implication was that it was about recovering from a failed relationship, but it works for our kind of transition, too.
You will recognize the line that I use for the tag line under my avatar picture. Casting off the dull certainty of my male persona in favour of an exciting but unknown future and freedom felt just right to me.
QuoteWhitewater by Eileen McGann
Whitewater's calling, the river's sweet refrain
Sings a chorus to the forest as it's shaking off the rain
The night was passed in thunder but the dawn is breaking clear
Whitewater's calling, and I'm moving on from here
And I'm moving on my way, letting go the rope
Casting off dull certainty and reaching for that brightly shining hope
Camped here forever, at least that how it seems
Waiting for a clearer sign, I'm wrestling with my dreams
I thought that they would bind me but now I think I see
Whitewater's calling, may it teach me to be free
And I'm moving on my way, letting go the rope
Casting off dull certainty and reaching for that brightly shining hope
I know the current's swift here the water's running deep
I know there's many rocks ahead I've seen them in my sleep
I know that I could founder just around the bend
But I love the water's laughter so I'll see it to the end
And I'm moving on my way, letting go the rope
Casting off dull certainty and reaching for that brightly shining hope

Hey
Don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
Just try your best
Try everything you can
And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right
Hey
You know they're all the same
You know you're doing better on your own so don't buy in
Live right now
Just be yourself
It doesn't matter if that's good enough for someone else
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right
Hey
Don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
Just do your best
Do everything you can
Don't you worry what their bitter hearts are going to say
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right
Once a boy, now a girl (or vice versa)
Ok I made that up but it would be nice

Changes...David Bowie
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
There's gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
