Title: Favourite Movie
Post by: foreversarah on April 08, 2008, 04:53:43 PM
Hi,

What's your all time favourite movie?

Mine would be Casno Royale, best James Bond of the lot.

Maybe I'm non-committal, but I can't just pick one movie from all time.
However, my current faves are:

Stardust
Million Dollar Baby
The Royal Tennanbaums
I (heart) Huckabees
Stranger than Fiction
The Red Violin

Yup.  :D

Stardust
American Beauty
Stranger than Fiction
Donnie Darko
Fight Club
The Matrix (not the sequels)
Edward Scissorhands
The Lion King
And Land Before Time (definitely not the sequels!)

These are the ones I'd name off the top of my head.

If I -had- to choose just one, it must be Stardust. I want a DvD with commentary by Gaiman, dammit!

I posted my choices in another topic yesterday but I'll repeat it here.

"Hunt for Red October" ... yea I know so boyish :)

There are so many others that I love. I agree with Moira, American Beauty was powerful.
Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty were so amazing because they made you think and
pay attention and were so different. I know people hate those movies but if you
looked past the blood and gore they were amazing films. Same with the Departed...
you never knew what was coming and if you looked past the gore it was great.

But I love a lot of chic-flicks too. The Lake House, Miss Congeniality, The Holiday is a recent fav.

Lots of others, there are too many to pick one. :)

Hi,

I like some chick flicks, I don't know why I just get interested in some of them.

I get so involved in the characters, it's like I become them... or I guess want to be
them :) I feel their pain, I feel their joy. I've not seen a movie since starting HRT
and I expect the experience will be interesting with my emotional response that I've
had lately. :)

Harvey is my fave film...

But by god Moira, I adore all them films, It's almost the exact same as my list if you take out casablanca, American Splendor and any Terry Gilliam and Buster Keaton ones.

My kids used to joke about waiting for "Land Before Time: the Yucutan Disaster" to finish the series off once and for all.  ;D

I loathed the Land Before Time sequels with a passion, but my brother kept wanting them for birthdays and christmas. Geez, he even watches the series on Cartoon Network now  ::)

They're just so happy-happy it pissed me off at the time...and so stupid...gah.

I confess, I never actually saw the entirety of Pulp Fiction...but the bits I did see were fun ^^'

A dear friend of mine loves to watch Japanese horror movies...I'm not a fan, but it helps when you have someone to cuddle up against while watching. So I guess I won't mind watching them with him when he comes to visit.

He even promised I could cuddle ^___^

Ducky will alway be my favourite, yep, yep, yep!

I didn't cry when Littlefoot's mother died. I didn't get it at the time. But when I watch it now, it's so very touching and sad...I never used to cry when Mufasa died either, but recently when I watch it, I have to fight real hard not to cry...and that's a bit awkward when you're surrounded by people who are making 'your mum' jokes while the...ah, wossname...big african running things that trample lions...anyway, while they...well...trample the lion...I lost the point.

Just tell them I got something in my eye. *sniff* Yeah, and I'm allergic to...*sniffle*...dust...and...winter...*sob*

I love cry-movies...I watched Rent for the first time a few months back, and I started crying half-way through ('cause I knew the story and I was singing along) and it felt so good, I watched it again, this time crying throughout the entire movie ::)

I can't even begin to think of some of my 'favorite' movies, I like so many.

The spectrum ranges from Dirty Dancing to Beauty and the Beast (Disney version).
Sweeney Todd
Kindergarten Cop
Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken
Untamed Heart (I think that's the right movie. Guy has a babboon heart?)
Encino Man

And so many more. But anything with Johnny Depp gets a huge thumb's up from me.

But other than that, the Hornblower series and the Sharpe series. Yeah. I love the Napoleonic Wars.

From, The Devil Wears Prada

Miranda Priestly: This... 'stuff'? Oh... ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.

So many favourites, I'll try to whittle it down (in no specific order) - Depending on my mood

I love "Cinderella" stories, like Enchanted, Ever After, Ella Enchanted, Princess Diaries

and other "fairy tales" - Stardust, Mulan, Princess Bride, Wizard of Oz, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast.

Drama - Serendipity, The Notebook, Count of Monte Cristo, Memento

Comedy - What about Bob, Legally Blonde

And Science Fiction / Space Opera - Serenity/Firefly, Aeon Flux, Underworld (trilogy), The Abyss, Star Wars (classic 3) Galaxy Quest, The Matrix

And yes I cry during many of them.  My spouse says I'm a boob.

Cheers!

Post by: MaggieB on August 27, 2010, 09:32:37 PM
My top ten and the reasons I chose them:
10: The Birds.  Because it made me fascinated with the North Coast of California even though it would be 30 years before I got to live there and it inspired me to write a novel.

9: Man's favorite Sport. Because it made me feel what love might be like when I was a pre-teen.

8: Star wars. Because it made me feel that evil can be beaten.

7:The Incident. Because it let me feel what it would be like to finally and permanently stop people who torment me.

6:The Last Starfighter. Because it inspired me to go for it whatever the cost.

5:The Sting. Because it taught me that I couldn't predict the ending of everything including how my life will go.

4:The Summer of '42. Because I wanted to have sex with Jennifer O'Neil as badly as the kid did.

3:Different for Girls. Because I wanted to be as poised and  independent as Kim in her new female gender.

2:Better than Chocolate. Because it was set in Vancouver B.C and had a lesbian transwoman who was accepted by other lesbians and loved by one.

1: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Because it gave me courage to face adversity and it would become my and my wife's theme song.

Dr. Strangelove
Hot Fuzz
Ingloruious Basterds

Absolute favourite: C.R.A.Z.Y. It's phenomenal.
Very close runners-up: Green mile, James Bond's with Sean Connery, Catch me if you can, The Incredible Hulk (my favourite (anti-)superhero. I envy him, I also feel like destroying buildings from time to time). And Aladdin. Omg, Aladdin. Apart from being super-hilarious if you watch it as an adult, Aladdin is so closely connected to my life and to my transsexuality and I could never share it before because other people wouldn't understand so I'm doing it now. When I was a child, I was playing fantasy stories in my head all the time and I was always him. I envied him that shirt of his that was always flapping around his bare chest and I could never have that. And he had the magic lamp that guaranteed him realization of any wish. And Jasmine was and still is my ideal woman. And Genie! I never figured the thing with Genie until I saw in a documentary how transgirls really like mermaids because of their not having genitals. And Genie is a male version of that. He desperately wishes to be "set free" from his imprisonment and when Aladdin finally allows him to be free, he gets his pair of legs and becomes a superhappy, full grown man.

Yes, Aladdin rocks.

Have just got back in from seeing Black Swan....

Black Swan Movie Review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkmA9Kx8CEg#ws)

Portman's attuned on-screen unravelling already gaining her the Grammy & BAFTA for best actress so far, I wonder if an Oscar now beckons too?

(And even though it was shown at the local art house movie flick place)..... sadly there were a few groans/snickers at the very  end.... (all male toned) ....which was a shame for me... as I think that as a film it deserves some respect...

But if you're not part of the driven creative world, perhaps the mental aspect is less easy to get?

Personally, I found the story, very moving; sadly apt too as a reflection on the TG state and how we 'chase' that elusive perfection.... trying to beat against all the odds the difficulties and the competition and drive for a brilliant physical success... much as principal company ballet dancers do....

That when we get there, finally attain that command performance..... then what?  :-\

There's lots of movies I like and for sure I've forgotten to mention some, but this is what I can come up for now:

Shawshank Redemption
Million Dollar Baby
Gran Torino
The Karate Kid
Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
Schlinder's List
Freaky Friday

The genry really varies as you see :) I'm see to like a wide variety of movies. One movie currently tops my list of personal favourites and I watched it only recently. It really touched me to the heart: Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/)

**no spoilers, just my summary of Amelie**
Amelie is about a 23-year old girl from Montmartre, Paris who got homeschooled by her father and lost her mother at a very young age. She grew up lonely and as a young girl she has developed a very active imagination to combat her feelings of loneliness. She works as a waitress in a local cafe and she eventually decides to become a do-gooder and help other people in their lives. In devoting her life to helping out others she meets lots of people and eventually finds happiness herself.

The plot, the music, the actors and everything about the movie is wonderful and has a scent of magic, yet everything displayed in the movie is so ordinary and easy to relate to. Amelie contains so many details, so I'm almost sure to spot some new details when watching it for a second time. The movie is so powerful it makes you appreciate the life's simple pleasures and it even makes you want to go to Paris yourself! (I've been in Paris many years ago).

I can recommend the movie to everyone :)

Dude a Satoshi Kon fan? High five man. My favorite of the film's he's directed is Millennium Actress but everything he's done is fantastic.

Oh yeah, I love his work! ;D Alongside Paprika, I like Tokyo Godfathers.

Gotta add a new film to my list which is Sex and the City (how manly I am?). We'll see if the second movie will make it to the list as well. :D

Some awesome movies there! Blade Runner - awesome, Sunshine - vastly underrated imho, Tron 2 - amazing soundtrack!, Tombstone - great! I always found Mad Max much better than its sequel, it just seemed grittier and more emotive.
Mines (in no particular order) are: Apocalypse Now, Blade Runner, Raiders of the Los Ark, Last of the Mohicans, Miller's Crossing, Apocalypto, The Lion King, Up, Conan the Barbarian (my guilty pleasure - but friggin' awesome musical score!), Star Wars (IV-VI), Once Upon a Time in the West, The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Raging Bull, Blood Diamond, True Romance, City of God, Gladiator, Apocalypto ... seriously this list could take a while!
