Title: Full-time Shopping List
Post by: DarthKitty on June 10, 2008, 04:37:23 PM
New Glasses? Check.
Brain screwed on correctly? Working on that.
Coworkers informed? Check.
HR informed? Check.
New worktastic wardrobe? Half-check.
Bonfire for male clothes scheduled for Friday? Check.
New snappy professional hairstyle? Hrm...

Every time I turn around someone else mentions something that's just an absolute "essential" that I'm going to need to get/going to need to do.

So, question: What's on everyone's must-have shopping list for going full-time?

A lot more of the mundane things than you probably have.  In my case, spanx, undies, shells and shirts, work shoes, and that sort of thing.

I've always found that no matter what I do a sense of humor is important and there is no substitute for it.  Remember if you can laugh at yourself, you will always be amused.

Confidence and ignoring that voice in your head that says: everyone knows this is your first time. And most of the other stuff THAT little voice says.

Congrats on going fulltime, Kit.

Hugs,

Nichole

Ya congratulations Kit on going full time and don't worry if you don't remember most of the stuff you have on that list, just do what feel right or comfortable for a girl like you to do.

From a female perspective, my biggest problem at this moment in time is with shoes.  I am struggling to find footwear that does not rip the skin from me heels, it is summer, tights/pantyhose or socks simply do not go well with skirts when the temperatures are high thus I wear shoes barefoot, as all women do.  Maybe my choice of footwear is in error, I blame not growing up from childhood as a girl and learning from my female peers  :(

That's always the biggest one.  When you get to Thursday and you've run out of things to wear, you are in trouble.

ROFL, welcome to womanhood! If you find such mythical items, please do tell!!!

I just go with sandals all summer. Cool and comfy, and work with nearly anything.

Otherwise, with shoes I always end up sticking bandaids on my heels and cardboard inserts in the backs of the shoes to reduce the agony ;)

New Glasses
Skirt-suit outfit for my court date (even though it is still a few months away)
Shoes to match the outfit
Possibly a little bit of trimming of my hair

Just before going fulltime last year, I found an affordable and stylish black Tahari skirt suit at Burlington Coat Factory for a fraction of what a nice suit would cost elsewhere, and some pretty blouses to go with it. I took my best girlfriend shopping with me, and she helped a lot with picking out the best looks for me.

I buy all my shoes from Payless. Ditto on the stylishness and savings. They have larger women's sizes too. I found a very workalicious pair of black pumps for only a few bucks, a few weeks before beginning full time.

When I went fulltime, I switched from contact lenses to glasses, since the frames help to feminize my appearance. I had already bought feminine frames for my glasses months from a discount optician before fulltime, and paid about half of what they would cost elsewhere.

However, the morning of my first day of fulltime, I splurged all-out at a good salon for a nice hairstyle, spent way more than I could afford, but it was worth it. When I walked into work, people were amazed I was able to look that good as a woman. I received many expressions of support and admiration from my colleagues that day. I consider it the happiest day of my (pre-op) life. Coincidentally, it was October 11-- National Coming Out Day.

Sounds like I will need to do some more shopping before I go FT  ;D.

And Darth, I do not recall Dawn unscrewing your brain but it seams she only did half the job. I will consult her when she returns about that losse screw  :D.

Hi DarthKitty

I dropped all my male clothes off at the Salvation army, had already talked to my program manager at work about my coming out, and started my full time the same day. Left me a bit dizzy at the end of the day but I was so very grateful and relieved that I had made my move. Most times I do things spontaneously before I change my mind.

When I was planning my coming out with my HR manager, she dropped a real bombshell on me.

She just turned to me and said "Well, Sandy, when do you want to come out, a couple of weeks or so?"

At this point I absolutely freaked!  Up to that point I had been full time everywhere but at work, but all my clothes were casual.  I had virtually no outfits that worked in a corporate environment.  I told her that and asked if we could delay it a few weeks while I got a minimal wardrobe together.

Finding shoes was, and still is, a problem, but also getting together enough corporate style outfits in a short period of time turned out to be a real challange.  It did mean I had a lot of shopping to do, so there was an up side to all of it!  :D

Anyway, congratulations DK!  Soon you'll fall into the regular routine of being full time.  And while it may become routine, you'll never take it for granted!

-Sandy

Aww thanks you two. :D

1. Black purse (I got the brown covered)
2. More shoes (while I still have the matching skills of a trained monkey throwing clothes out of the closet for me, I am beginning to understand the theory, and the differences between "casual" and "casual dress")
3. Worktastic clothes (still half check, but a full battalion of people at the ready to assist me this weekend on the shopping, as per my skills outlined in #2.)

Hair style...major check!

I had to get up early today in order to travel from my town into Birmingham and then on to London for my appointment with the clinic.  Despite allowing myself 3 hours to get ready, I almost missed the first train...I just could not decide what to wear, the weather forecast was vague, I could not find the right shoes to be comfortable in for 12+ hours, I guess if we had a 40 hour day, it would still not be enough, no wonder men are baffled with us females when it comes to getting ready for anything......ah well, at least I didnt forget my lippy

I think I discovered some of the matching skills that women have, they bring the stuff they want to match with them.  Why didn't I think of that instead of guessing?

Born shoes seem to be comfortable and can fit wider feet decently. So far, the only ones I have found that don't skin me quickly.
Worth checking out.

Killer fashion shoes = Skin grafts.

I saw a young woman today suffer for her adherence to fashion etc, the skin from her heel was flapping loose, blood everywear about her lower leg, a sight best suited to a meat counter at the local store.  I can understand, she was a gennetic woman struggling with footwear and I also struggle to find something to wear in warmer weather and not need hosiery to protect the back of my foot.

I asked a female friend about this problem and she could only say that she had the problem in her teens and her skin is now leathery in that area of concern  :-\

Most definitely more time in the mornings!!!  It was only a year and a half since I went full time, but it seems like forever.  These days, it seems I am on autopilot to get to work.  If I don't wash my hair that morning, I can spend a little time checking emails.  Then it is feed & potty the dogs, dilation, cleanup, clothes, makeup, hair, jewlery, fix lunch, potty the dogs, and walk out the door.

Being yourself is WONDERFUL!

Congrats DarthKitty!

Can I see if any of those clothes are good? Is it mostly dressy stuff or not?
