Title: Help with passing/improving presentation? Updated
Post by: ccb138 on March 03, 2009, 01:14:54 PM
Hey all,

OK so I thought I'd try this again now that I've been able to get some better pics to use...

This is my basic attempt, without makeup.  Wondering what things I can do to improve on it to give a better chance at passing in public.  Thanks in advance!  ^^

Let me know if it doesn't show up!  Thanks ^^

wow you look great. the only advice i have is to wear a little makeup, especially with that dress. it will help in passing.

Thanks ^^  I haven't got makeup yet so I haven't been able to utilize it so far, but will be able to soon..  What I'm mainly concerned about are facial features, nose, jawline, and forehead especially, which I'm not sure I can do anything about even with makeup.

the forehead looks perfect with the bangs. i really don't see any problem areas.

I'd say you look pretty excellent, but cell phone pics are always hard to judge.  Is that natural hair?  I'm definitely jealous of your facial features.

Look quite nice :) If those werent posted on a tg forum, id not know tbh. Though the glasses suggest librarian.. id go for rimless or contacts.

Wow!

Okay, I personally think you pass 100% now.  But I do have just a couple of things to mention.

Definitely put something on your lips, even if it's just gloss.  I think the glasses look really cute on you. :D And try brushing your bangs to the side a little, either parted down the middle or off to the side?  Just to see how it looks more than anything else.

The neckline of your dress is really flattering. :)

Sorry I can't say more, I just can't find anything to criticize. ;D

I think some pretty dangle earrings would be perfect, especially if you tuck your hair behind your ear. Then again, I'm a total earring addict.

The glasses I noticed a few years ago help with the nose size, usually only if they're chunky or plastic, but I've been debating it.  The hair is sadly not natural, it's actually a quite low priced (35) wig , I'm letting my hair grow at the moment to try and be rid of the thing.  The other thing I'm trying to locate at the moment are face shaping tips for makeup that you can use to minimize a jaw/nose etc... especially in PROFILE.  That damned profile is my biggest nemesis.  grr...

Wow. Even without makeup, you're pretty and very passable. I like the glasses. I'd suggest a little lipstick and some eyeliner. You don't want to overdo it, but it's nice to highlight your features.

Concerns have been raised about the authenticity of these photographs. I won't judge either way but I will offer this advice. Take anything you are told by anyone over the internet with a grain of salt, decide for yourself.

Have to say the first photos don't look right, can't be bothered at this time of night to check them, but that's either some strange camera or...
Title: Re: Trying again with better pics... Help with passing/improving presentation?

the camera was my cell phone... only odd thing about them that I can think of is that they were taken in the bathroom mirror so I could get the angle right.

I have to say I'm feeling kind of attacked right now.  I came here to get advice from people on how to best work with my features so that I wouldn't have any problems out in public, and having several people question whether my photographs are my own or I have no idea what... frankly it's embarassing and hurtful.
Title: Re: Trying again with better pics... Help with passing/improving presentation?

I can attest that that is definitely how cell phone pictures look -- which is to say, slightly odd.  I recently took some of myself as well (also in a bathroom mirror).

I think some of the reaction is that your pics are very convincing at being passable in way that almost makes it look easy, which I'm sure is something a lot of us wish we could claim.  It's a really tricky situation -- our aim here is to try to pass 100% as female, but the closer you get to that magic 100%, the more likely it is that people will think you're actually 100% female trying to pass as less than 100%!  It's a bit crazy.

OK, so here are the requested comparison shots with makeup...  These are on a regular camera too so more of the face detail is visible.  I'm concerned with whether I'm using too much, too little, not right type/colors.  These were taken about 2 and a half hours after application after a dinner with friends.  I feel like the blue tint is kind of noticable on the chin in the second and third pics, but i don't know if i'm making too much out of it or not...

You look quite pretty! :)

If you really want some color tips, I do have some suggestions. I don't want it to sound like I'm being negative though because that's not my intention. I have a very good eye for color. Just ask Hypatia. I think the grey sweater and teal shirt look lovely on you. The grey looks good with your eyes. I don't think the turquoise hair band quite goes though. The colors don't really match, but the most important factor is the color contrast. It's too bright for the rest of the outfit. Color tones need to match just as much as shades do. It also depends on the season of the year. Depending on where you live, bright colors can be too striking when it's cold and grey out.

I still think a nice pair of small dangle earrings would finish off your look. It gives the eye something else to be drawn to. I think you did a great job with the makeup. Did you have any lip gloss on before you ate? If not, a bit of that would look nice.

You really do look great! :)

Oooh, definitely get your ears pierced.  I think a nice pair of pearl earrings would go so well with that outfit. :) And yeah, the headband is a bit bright.

I can't tell in the pictures, did you put any lip color on?  If you did you might want to try a shade darker. :)

That's all. :D I agree, the slate blue color of your tank top really goes well with your eyes and the hair color.

Sadly, I'm not out to my family and most people in my life, so piercing of ears is currently not in the cards :(   oh well.  Yah, I had a feeling the headband wasn't a great match, thanks for letting me know!

Why not?  My ears have been pierced for 20 years now.  And that was in the days when guys didn't have their ears priced, unless they were gay.  I am Trans and it seemed OK to me.

Janet

And you are quite pretty.

I don't like the headband.  And I think I'm sort of iffy on the fringe, with that hair.  Sideswept bangs might look good on you.

You also look fine without much makeup.  I think you really only need something on your lips, maybe nothing more.

And the reason you feel attacked is because you were.  I'm not really sure why either.  Is it a problem around here of people posting inauthentic photos and then asking for advice on how to look better?

I'm really sorry hon. We had a poster on here not too long ago that used a web-sourced picture and passed it off as a pic of herself, and I think people are just careful of that, cause you never know who's really at the keyboard. Please don't take it personally. There are just alot of bad people out there and gender-variant people need to be careful.

I think you have excellent features, BTW. I'm not too clued up on how hair and make-up affect the face, but your facial structure is really good.

I have no idea. Susan just posted a thread one day saying that the person in question's account had been deleted because her profile photo, which she had maintained was a picture of her, was actually somebody else. I think Susan was probably playing it safe in case this person was somebody cruising the forum under false pretences for less savoury reasons.

And yeah, it was a gorgeous pic.

I was just confused by it... The closest I ever came on here to an inauthentic photo was pasted-on hair before I got my wig, and that was out of self conciousness.  I don't understand what purpose there would be in passing someone elses photo off as your own when you're trying to figure out what to do to look better.  You have no control over someone elses appearance.

Have you tried a sideswept fringe?  It might give your hair a little bit of an edge.

If you're determined to keep that fringe(it's what I do with my hair, actually--it's very in) then you need to get longer hair, I think.  I think at that length, it gets a little helmet headed.  Most girls I know with hair at that length are doing the sideswept bangs.  For good reason I think.

I'll jump into a bit that was discussed in the 'middle' of this thread.

I also am leery of pierced ears and found an excellent solution...Hobby Lobby (or any other store that sells craft supplies)

I found gold and silver clip-on gizmo...see:
http://www.craftsetc.com/store/item.aspx?ItemId=97869&dep=85&cat=20&subcat=5&Search=Y (http://www.craftsetc.com/store/item.aspx?ItemId=97869&dep=85&cat=20&subcat=5&Search=Y)

I buy any dangly earring and take it apart to attach to the clip-on and make some nice clip-ons out of pierced earrings

Always...Teree
BTW...you look great!

You look good you really do so you can be grateful as others have a much harder time of it. Having said that looking good and actually passing are two different things. As one person said in here a lot of it is attitude and I would add experience.

After all that I still have to say you can be looking good and carrying yourself o so wonderfully and still some is going to take one look at you and know there always that person.

You have a great foundation to start with so I don't think it will be to painful.

Also as some one else said every bit you can add to what you have will help towards passing so I would consider my original response to your first post asking for advice.

Hugs
Kristina

My suggestion: earings.
Possibly a necklace too.
Accessories do wonders for an extra touch of femininity.

You probably won't get kicked out of bed for eating cookies. But I'd pierce my ears and get some small hoop or tear drop shaped earrings. And get some bracelets too.

You have a really good foundation to start with. Very fortunate.

Heather Rose:

Hi. Here goes.

Your hair looks great with the bangs, and your face is naturally beautiful. There are expectations out in the world about how we women look. That being the case, I think the following might help or at least would be worth experimenting with:
Definitely use some natural looking (dark and light browns) eye shadow (maybe experiment with some hues of gray - I'm not sure), a little bit of highlight around the eyes with eyeliner (not too thick), a touch of black mascara, light makeup to fill in any pores that we can't see in the photo, but from my experience are there, a little light pink blush, and especially some lipstick. That you'll have to match up with your skin (obviously true for all the makeup), but I suspect that you don't want to use into any deep colors (stay away from wine and bright red). Maybe a very light pink, almost the color of your lips but with a 'deeper' hue and get a little shine on the lips with some lightly glossed lipstick.

Will you please post the next set after you do whatever you do? I'd love to see it!
Hugs,
Janine

Congrats at the hard work you are putting into this. Being a golfer, it reminds me of the behind the scenes work that even Tiger Woods does to make it look so easy on a Sunday.

What I notice most about the differences in the photographs is how your joy about your natural feminine self jumps out at us. You seem to have a real heartfelt smile. Your boy mode pic looks a person playing a role that not quite right. Maybe your natural female happiness and authenticity emerged with those first photos and let some to a erroneous conclusion.

As far as impovements, I think you are doing just fine. You might find it alot of fun and helpful to go get a professoinal makeover. It may give you some new tips or insughts. Besides this, I would say that removing facial hair by electro or lasar early in anyones transition is really key. Smooth skin helps not only our passability, but also improves our youthful appearance.

Good luck!
