hiya,
i <3 my hair lol, im sure lotsa other people do too (love THEIR hair that is, not mine, though i hope they like mine too lol) so i thought id start this thread....
discuss your hair care do's/dont's, Homemade hair care products, and what ever hair related subject you feel is important :)
also:
1: name a few of your favorite shampoo/conditioners
&
2: name a few of the worst shampoo/conditioners
To add shine and repair damage, use olive oil. Take the virgin or extra virgin oil and warm it is a pan of hot water. You want it warm, not hot. Message it into your hair and wrap it up in a towel. Let soak in for about 15 minutes. Comb out.
I use Suave shampoo and conditioner. Inexpensive and they work fine. I am not fond of Pert, because it leave my hair greasy.
do you do the olive oil before or after a shower? like go to bed after you comb it out an wash the rest away?
and for the Suave, any particular suave? iv used a few different of their products, some leave my hair feeling kinda coarse, some are nice an smooth, but in the end, they all leave it coarse feeling if i do switch it up.
Use the olive oil after a shower and maybe only once or twice a week. Like VO5 conditioner. You can comb it out, but let it stay in it the morning.
Usually I use a clarifying shampoo, before the olive oil treatment and the day after. But for the most part I use the Color Care shampoo and conditioner, because I color my hair.
many thanks for the tips -hugs- ^.^
i think ill try that friday night, incase i cant get a show one morning, dont wana go to school greasy haired :P
I get dandruff, so for shampoo (also known as fake->-bleeped-<- harhar) I like to use head and shoulders. For a conditioner I'm using a pantene volumising conditioner as I like the extra body in my hair.
My advise is the poos with silicon in them are great except you need to mix them up a little as you can get build up leaving your hair rather heavy and a little greasy I reckon.
You don't really need to wash every day. In fact if you go at least a day without washing your hair is so much easier to tie up (they tell ballet dancers not to wash their hair before a concert - makes it easier to put in a bun). Also it is good for your hair to let your natural oils do some magic.
There was this craze I heard about where you don't wash your hair at all. After about a month it becomes self cleaning - just use water. It ceases to be greasy and lank and you end up with beautiful shiny hair. Aparantly it works, maybe I'll try it one day....
I love my hair too.
Oh, another things - if you use irons, make sure you use a product that helps to protect the hair.
I love my hair, but boy did it look like crap today. :(

yeah i dont wash my hair every day, it gets too dry anyways when i do that, and then tangly and bleh x.x
no iron for me, however my friend today told me she has some curler things, like the rollers you put in your hair, that warm up, she said they dont get ~hot~ just warm, which doesnt sound tooo bad, ever used these? if so, any tips are welcome...i got some spray "frizz-ease" by "john frieda collection" says heat defeat an stuff, i figured hey, it gets hot hear, maybe itll offer sun protection :P.
also: hears a recipy i tryed and loved, gave me movie star hair, very wierd stuff, but it works!
ingredients:
-------------------
a bit of olive oil
cocoa powde
( the bitter pure cocoa stuff, not like chocolate milk mix or something)1 puree'd banana
just work it in, let it get to the roots a ends, and i let it sit for about 5 minutes, then rinsed, shampoo'ed an conditioned, SOOOOO silky :)

QuoteApple cider vinegar has been the wise woman's health and beauty ally for centuries.
Now science tells us that it promotes blood circulation in the small blood capillaries that irrigate the skin. It is also antiseptic, combating yeasts, viruses and bacteria that can cause infection.
Apple cider vinegar is rich in alpha-hydroxy acids, helping to dissolve fatty deposits on the skin's surface and reducing scaly conditions, promoting a softer, smoother appearance. This miracle fluid also regulates the pH of the skin.
You won't believe how many ways apple cider vinegar can be used to promote healthier skin and hair! Find out some of the couldn't-be-simpler ways to put it to work for you, below:
1. Hair rinse: Apple cider vinegar gets rid of residue build-up on hair, leaving it soft and shiny. Mix 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar with 1 quart water and use as a final rinse after shampooing.
2. Stain remover: If your hands are stained from chopping berries, dab some straight apple cider vinegar on the stains and they'll disappear like magic.
3. Tired, swollen hands or feet: Rub a little apple cider vinegar on tired, sore, or swollen hands or feet and feel the soothing difference.
4. Overnight facial: Get rid of blemishes and make your skin more youthful by patting apple cider vinegar on your face before bed. You'll have softer, smoother skin in the morning!
5. Sunburn bath: If you've been singed by the sun, find soothing relief by adding a cupful of apple cider vinegar to your bath and soaking for 10 minutes.
6. Topical skin burns: Apply ice-cold apple cider vinegar to prevent blistering.
7. Lightening age spots: Dab areas with straight apple cider vinegar and leave on overnight.
8. Dandruff fighter: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar to 3 parts warm water to balance scalp pH and control dandruff. You can also apply undiluted vinegar to the scalp. Allow it to penetrate, then shampoo with a mild shampoo.
I make a toner with one cup cider vinegar and one cup green tea. But I might try it with spearmint tea. Might help with the facial hair.
janet: to stop growth, increase growth, or like to help for shaving?
muffin: i didnt know it was good for hair, but i used apple cider vinegar for acne treatment which worked pretty good :P
To slow growth. In another thread Rejennyrated was talking about spearmint tea helping to reduce body hair. So I figure that it might work to retard the facial crud.
oh, cool, ill definatly try that then...im lazy when it comes to shaving but i really hate the face fuzz
Maybe by combining this with electrolysis and/or laser, the face fuzz will be easier to handle.
use it on my legs too cuz thats even more of apain lol x.x go through razors like crazy :/
I use an electric, reusable. Or Nair if I haven't shaved in a while, such as Winter. Which remind me I need to shave for tomorrow.

It is true. I had a friend in boarding school (guy) who did that.
i have an electric that i use when im lazy, but i hate to becuase it doesnt get it all :/ i like it smooth as possible, bugs me when a day later i get stubble, ruin the hard work i put into trying to get rida it...or the itch of regrowth in places like pits
i shave winter or summer, the smoothness factor outweighs the bitter cold :P or corse the problem for me is shaving at all, gota get a motivational speaker to get me in the mood to do it x.x my razors dull really easy, dono if its cuz their cheap or my hairs corse, i like to think its the first thing.

to be honest, it just sounded gross, too greasy lol, but if we got a confirmation, maybe ill try it :P
If I had a bathtub it would be easier. Soak then shave. But with only a shower it is a pain with a razor. If I want a close shave, electric first then razor.

do you use shaving cream? i recomend Traderjoes brand shave cream, its honey mango, smellllls sooooooo awsome :P dono if you gota trader joes there though, might be a california chain store.
i have a tub/shower but iv never shaved in the tub i always just stand up, helps the skin stay pulled out too, but also i get pruned so quick in water if im sitting there, cant stand being pruned, which is wierd cuz i love being in water :P
Noxzema hair minimizing shave creme. And the soaking helps to soften the hair. Plus I just love to soak. What kind of razor do you use?
i have an electric...but i dont really like using it...kinda had a bad experience that involved a burning sensation \, though i think was cuz i did it with dry skin...it hurt though, and the results were not worth the pain so yeah...
other than that, 2 blade disposable (parents buy em i use em), iv been meaning to buy a Venus, those kind with the huge block of lubricant around it and like 4 blades, but very shy about even going near them >.<
Why be shy? I use Soleil, which has four blades and a curved handle. And use a really good moisturizer after Aloe Vera. No dry skin or irritation.
rambling is good :P gave me lotsa insite ^.^
question (not related to hair) about apple cider vinegar...i have kinda a block in my ear, iv tryed hydrogen peroxide but didnt work the well...would the vinegar work?
i think ill start buying cheapo shampoo an go to hairstylists for conditioner, less expensive than going for both too, see how that works out :P have you ever used teatree oil containing-shampoo/conditioner?

Apple cider vinegar....chk that its real apple cider vinegar. Vinegar today is nothing more than a 5% solution of acetic acid. Virtualy the same as it used to be, but now made with filtered water and acetic acid. Apple cider vinegar is the same, but with flavoring/color additives. Side note: Brown sugar is not unrefined sugar. Its refined sugar with molasses. There's a difference.
Anyways, all nice stuff you can do with vinegar, and then some. Its almost as strong as using bleach on solid surfaces, works wonders for fresshening up your laundry, and for cuts and burns it works very well. But the one I like the best is to snort a little off the end of a spoon. Yep...snort a couple three drops right up as far as you can into your sinus's. It doesn't burn, won't make your face implode or anything, just tingles real good and smells like you got a pickle stuck up your nostrils. IT does, very quickly, loosen up your sinus's, let them drain, gets rid of any low level infection (gotta sinus infection?) and keeps your nostrils and sinus's open longer than anything I've ever tried. I personally like Balsomic Vinegar, and want to try a few others, just for the flavor.
Use it in place of clarifiers and shampoo lightly, condition. It will reduce the bacteria and stuff to stop dandruff and itchy scalp. The list goes on and on for vinegar, I'd like to hear some more....
Shampoo...whatch out for sodium lauryl sulfate and anything that sounds like it. Garage floor cleaner main ingreient. State on the floor cleaner label not to get in contact with skin. Ammoinium Lauyrl sufat is good though. Shampoo thing, cheap is just fine, don't waste money. Do spend money on conditioner. Look for what you want on the label and its a good place to start. Also ask if the sales person nows their ->-bleeped-<-, and are not just trying to make a sale. Its all in the conditioner, conditionererer. And if it works, stick with it till it doesn't. Do not use the switch'm up method. bad. Give em at least three try's before you give up. And what works for your sister probably won't work for you, we're all that different. And the no wash for a month? Its an old Hippie tale. Doesn't work. Can you imagine what your hair would look like? If you could see through all the scalp flakes?
LOLOLOL!! would it work if you didn't wash your clothes for a month and then they start to magicaly start to clean themselves? Both would probably seem better once you scraped the crud away, but clean? Does your car do that? (don't work on the smelly guy about three doors down either). Gentle brushing, good conditioner, and only wash when it needs it. and gentle brushing. Mines halfway down my back, I tie it back loosely. I haven't had the ends trimed in over a yr, and am just getting enough split ends to maybe get one. Sorry I rammbleddddddddddddd.

btw, ALOE VERA: is this good for your hair? cuz they sell at walmart by like the gallon for 7 bucks, didnt seem like a bad deal
I have heard of vinegar being used for a lot of things, but as a sinus remedy? Well if you get the real stuff, which I do, I don't see why?
And if I don't wash my hair every couple of days it gets really oily.
And I hate you, Ativan, for your hair being that long. ;D But mine is slowly getting longer.

i know you dont scrape, but i cant help it :/ the hair gets so think by the time i finaly shave if i dont do the scrape meathod itll take forever and ill run outa hot water x.x icy showers are nawt meh friend lol
I have seen some conditioners that have aloe vera in it, but I don't know if it is any good.
For the ear, try witch hazel. It act as a drawing solution and helps to clear out the blockage.
And remember to brush your hair 100 times. I asked my grandmother once why and she said it distributes the natural oils.
About the Gillette razor. At $15 for four replacement is a bit much. The Soleil is only about $7 for the same amount and it works just as good. If you want it to buzz ... Never mind something about attaching a vibrator. :icon_redface:

Use shorter strokes, but don't scrape. And do you exfoliate first. It really helps by getting rid of the dead skin cells which is what clogs any razor.

where can i get witch hazel? i assume itll be an oil?
i brush my hair lots, believe me :P however, i have a bad habit of brushing wet, or even in the shower >.< i got a wide tooth comb though...like the kind with the handle, it said wet comb on the package..that balances out right?
i might try the soleil razors, gota wait till next we go to town lol(lives in the litteral meaning of "middle of no-where...80ish mile 1 way trip to the nearest wallmart, otherwise its 36 to some minimart style deals :P)

i dont exfoliate, im really shy about buying anything even slightly feminine, though i am getting betterish...mostly cuz i was tired of nails breaking, so i got hair/skin/nail vitamins+clear coat polish and polish remover. geuss i just gota suck it up if i want to do it right but god >.< makes my insides feel smushed when i go near the hygene isle >.< so much stuff id like to buy and would never ever dream of going to the register with :x
Witch hazel is actually a solution with witch hazel in it. and it is in the same place as the rubbing alcohol. You may have to make you a long list if you can't get to a bigger store.
I use decongestant because I have some swelling in the sinuses. But it can be addictive.
QuoteCrap!!! The first reply I get from one of my forum hero's and she says she hates me! *Big Tears*

P.S, you really are the forums hero, i see you and the word forum one in the same, of corse you were the one that welcomed me hear :P
Don't be embarrassed about buying anything you want. They don't know if you are buying it for you, your Mom, your Sister or your girlfriend.
Of course, having been married three times I have had a ton of practice buying feminine things.
And a really, really cheap exfoliate is olive oil and salt. Place some salt in your palm and add just enough oil to make a paste. Scrub away. It washes off and moisturizes.
And Walmart should have it. I don't remember where exactly, because I quit shopping there. But it should be over by the rubbing alcohol.
janet:
i know i ~shouldnt~ be, but i cant help it :/ i also gota be in the same car for like an hour or something on the way home, and i feel like "oh god oh god oh god their gona see all my stuff and just x.x", but i am getting better like i said, just a fear ill have to get over or life will be pretty hard :/
on the topic of exfoliate...have you ever used that pad thing thats suposed to scrape hair off painlessly with micro crytals?
Yes I have and yes they work, But you can get carried away and really hurt your skin. And being the cheap girl that I am, I have even tried to duplicate it but that was an epic fail.
So it was back to the razors. Takes just as long. I would guess you are still with the parental units. Look for the stuff that is made for guys. They have it, because guys are getting into the whole skin care regiment now. They even make a Nair for guys. ::)
well the whole hair removal other than facial is a touchy subject...my mom noticed and called me out on the subject, and i was just like....!!!!!!! O.O....x.x.....:x....>.<
it was very very awkward >.<
she didnt know that i go all out luckily...or didnt say anything...god it was horrible though :/ "DID YOU SHAVE YOUR LEGS?? PULL UP YOUR PANTLEG, LEME SEE...." x.x she didnt yell it but firm voice, and the whole being called out about it, eep :x
as for the hair removing pad thingy, iv tryed with a nail file thingy, you know the emery pad or what ever its call where its gritty, got it from a friend :P but yeah that worked but i did get kinda carried away an a bit of burning tingly feeling occured.
lol! reminds me of the first time someone in my family noticed I was shaving, I reached across the table and my brother said "what's up with your arms did you shave them?", I said yeah and he asked why and I said "I prefer them that way". End of discussion lol! Few months later he found out the whole story and was cool. ^_^

thankkkk you lol, i shave my arms as well...a few people at school kinda noticed...awkward x.x it was a girl and she pointed out "even girls dont shave their arms" and i noticed all the girls at my school have very hairy arms O.o i stopped shaving compleatly for aa while after that >.< i started shaving again but stopped shaving the arms...i might start that up again, because i just dotn like body hair, my own in perticular.
I epilate the arm hair, I cant stand it either. Got everything else zapped or electroed. Although the underarm hair appears to be trying to rise from the dead.
my underarm hair grows slowest i think, which is really nice, because its really gross in my opinion...iv had kinda a train going for months now, shave there the least and its the shortest of all :P
Do you ride a bicycle bellbell? It's the perfect cover for shaving.
If you are a cyclist, then shaving the arms and legs shows you are serious about it.
It's to prevent injury if you have a fall, the hair melts with the friction and pulls out chunks-Nasty!! Whether you actually ride all that much is irrelevant, as long as people think you do is what's important. After all they think you are a guy.
If you don't wash your hair at all, you can get some nasty yeast and fungal infections, and it's smelly too!
thats a really good idea with the bike! :)
and with the non washed hair, i dono, the idea of unwashed hair is bad, but i think its so crazy it cant not work...but i dont think ima try it lol

Actually I knew a girl in boarding school who shaved her arms. She wasn't even a 'hairy' girl, I had a bit of a crush on her. So yes, most girls don't, but it's not unheard of. I don't shave them personally because I end up getting red bumps. Hoping hormones will thin the hair a bit once I start on them (it's not very thick to begin with).

Not sure how this thread got onto shaving, but I have an actual hair care related question: This is the first time I've tried growing my hair long, and I've noticed that I get a lot of hair coming out when I shower, and again when I comb it after getting out of the shower. I'm 27 so hair loss isn't the issue. It's more that the hair strands are breaking, rather than coming out at the roots or anything. But I don't know what to do about it -- I've changed the way I shampoo to try to be more gentle, but it still seems like a lot. So any advice on that front? Should I try looking for some kind of special shampoo or conditioner? Some special kind of brush to use? I don't really have anyone to teach me this kind of stuff at the moment :P.

well, it might just be sheding, you always shed alot, short or long hair, but long hairs more noticiable :P i paniced and worryed and stressed when i grew my hair long the first time :P
inless you see visable hair loss, like a freind tells you "oh...your hairs looking thin!" or something try not to worry tooo much.
as for shampooing/conditioning, just like at a salon, hold your head back a bit and starting at the forehead area, work it down into your scalp, moving down to the ends. not as easy as stylists make it seem, but its great.
another tip: when you got tangles, dont dare use your brush/comb :P it hurts and its baddddd for the strands. instead, get your fingers deep in the hair and wiggle them as you move your hands out. its easyer on your hair, and in my experiences, is usualy more effective :P
Never comb your hair when wet. However you can comb it in the shower with the direction of the water flow.
You may be getting breakage. Use a very good conditioner, or the olive oil trick to help minimize breakage.
oh thats good, thats how i usually do it, let the water go through as i comb with a wide tooth comb, just to get it flipped back to shampoo/condition it and to rinse.

How exactly am I supposed to 'work it'? When it was shorter I would just squirt the shampoo on to my hands and then rub it into my hair until it lathered up, but with long hair (shoulder-length or a bit longer), the first handful of shampoo doesn't do anything, and it takes 2-3 to get any lather, and by that point I have a bunch of broken hair stuck to my hands. I don't know how to get it to lather without using tons of it at once :(.

get it on the hair near the forehead and make quick, short wiping motion moving it back along your hair, itll foam and move down to where you need it :P may need to add a little water if your not getting enough foamage.
Alright, I'll try it tomorrow and see how it goes :P. Thanks for the advice everyone.
apply shampoo and add water to get a good lather, then work it in with your fingers swirling it around, pulling it together and massaging your scalp at the same time. Rinse well. It's the conditioner that really needs to be worked into the strands. I start with a big pile of it (a palm full) on top and run my fingers through to the ends, carrying the conditioner along and working it in with my fingers or between my thumb and other fingers. Do this several times until your fingers basically flow through with no resistance. Do NOT force a tangle! You will end up with a handful of hair. Try to pull it apart from the sides to the center of the tangle, a few strands at a time. Rinse out the conditioner basically the same way. I have to use a lot of conditioner but I get almost zero breakage. I comb it out after washing with a very large toothed comb with lots of space between the teeth. Last I apply a dab of good silicone based smoothing serum like Garnier Sleek & Shine, working it in with my fingers from roots to tips. This seals the hair, and makes it shiny and and prevents frizzies when it's dry. I rarely ever use a hair dryer unless I'm really in a hurry because it really dries out your hair which makes it more brittle and contributes to breakage. Once it's dry I finish by brushing with a natural bristle brush to bring out the shine.
The one thing that really helped with the breaking/pulling out was HRT. It even caused an increase in my hair density, though all those new ones growing in short can be a royal pain frizzing out all over the place, especially in damp weather. That's when I discovered the smoothing serum can help with that.
glad we could help :)
What about shampoo and conditioner brands? I've been using garnier fructis over the past few months BUT I swear my ponytail feels thinner and I have had a lot of hair coming out which I just put down to being normal with longer hair. But I've just been reading bad stuff about garnier plus it's really cheap which no doubt means it's full of cheap crap ingredients.
I'm open to organic products but they change depending where you are in the world, I just want to use products that are not harsh or filled with too many nasty chemicals. :P

well, im not an expert hear, but a general rule of thumb iv heard alot: get suggestions from licenced hair stylists and buy salon brand hair care stuff, which makes sence, they want you to have nice hair, they make money because you have hair :P
I know they want us to have nice hair but I still see them as middle people for marketing. Not saying it's not the best.. but it could still do the same thing as a cheaper brand. This is what sucks it would take a life time to go through every brand to find one that works well and is safe.
I think I might go back to trying organic products as the thought of lots of harsh chemicals including sodium lauryl sulfate running through my hair is off putting, plus I'm going to go back to using apple cider vinegar as I stopped about a year ago when life got complicated :P
It's just that I've also read bad stuff about organic products as well...!!!...*screams* ..what is truth....is there such a thing ....*goes crazy*.
lol
I have been using the Garnier Sleek & Shine stuff... shampoo & conditioner, then a leave-in conditioner for after I get out of the shower (otherwise it gets dry and frizzy again). I'll have to keep an eye out for the smoothing serum, sounds like it might be the missing ingredient.

ask your stylist what she uses and what she would suggest for your hair type, cuz every ones hairs diffrent and needs diffrent stuff, dry hair needs moisture, oily hair needs a little dryness to get just right, a good stylist will tell you truethfull the good stuff to use, and a really good one can tell you cheap brands :P get a good relationship with your stylist ;)
I talked to my ex about this last night and she's put me onto a trusted brand, she's a health nut like me and she found a good organic brand that is chemical free yay!!!! So I will try that, my hair is normal so it doesn't require anything special, my old stylist who I haven't been to for years but may need to soon was always interested in selling me brands that they were commissioned to sell, I don't know I can be highly sceptical on such topics. *shrugs* The brands that most 'professionals' push are full of chemicals as they're not bothered by them.
But... I think I've found my brand yay! ^_^

just saw a commercial that stood out:
L'oreal EverStrong products, just thought id post for people to look into :P
So I just used a hair straightening iron for the first time (bought it months ago actually) and I have to say wow -- never thought my hair could look like that. It still looks a bit off since it's all different lengths from not getting a haircut for over a year (and have male haircut previously). And I'm also hairy-faced since I have electro tomorrow (snow permitting). But still, it looks and moves totally different. I can't wait to see how it looks after electro, with some proper clothes on :).
