Do you ride a bicycle bellbell?  It's the perfect cover for shaving.
If you are a cyclist, then shaving the arms and legs shows you are serious about it.

It's to prevent injury if you have a fall, the hair melts with the friction and pulls out chunks-Nasty!! Whether you actually ride all that much is irrelevant, as long as people think you do is what's important. After all they think you are a guy.

If you don't wash your hair at all, you can get some nasty yeast and fungal infections, and it's smelly too!

thankkkk you lol, i shave my arms as well...a few people at school kinda noticed...awkward x.x it was a girl and she pointed out "even girls dont shave their arms" and i noticed all the girls at my school have very hairy arms O.o i stopped shaving compleatly for aa while after that >.< i started shaving again but stopped shaving the arms...i might start that up again, because i just dotn like body hair, my own in perticular.

Actually I knew a girl in boarding school who shaved her arms.  She wasn't even a 'hairy' girl, I had a bit of a crush on her.  So yes, most girls don't, but it's not unheard of.  I don't shave them personally because I end up getting red bumps.  Hoping hormones will thin the hair a bit once I start on them (it's not very thick to begin with).

Not sure how this thread got onto shaving, but I have an actual hair care related question:  This is the first time I've tried growing my hair long, and I've noticed that I get a lot of hair coming out when I shower, and again when I comb it after getting out of the shower.  I'm 27 so hair loss isn't the issue.  It's more that the hair strands are breaking, rather than coming out at the roots or anything.  But I don't know what to do about it -- I've changed the way I shampoo to try to be more gentle, but it still seems like a lot.  So any advice on that front?  Should I try looking for some kind of special shampoo or conditioner?  Some special kind of brush to use?  I don't really have anyone to teach me this kind of stuff at the moment :P.

well, it might just be sheding, you always shed alot, short or long hair, but long hairs more noticiable :P i paniced and worryed and stressed when i grew my hair long the first time :P

inless you see visable hair loss, like a freind tells you "oh...your hairs looking thin!" or something try not to worry tooo much.

as for shampooing/conditioning, just like at a salon, hold your head back a bit and starting at the forehead area, work it down into your scalp, moving down to the ends. not as easy as stylists make it seem, but its great.

another tip: when you got tangles, dont dare use your brush/comb :P it hurts and its baddddd for the strands. instead, get your fingers deep in the hair and wiggle them as you move your hands out. its easyer on your hair, and in my experiences, is usualy more effective :P

Never comb your hair when wet.  However you can comb it in the shower with the direction of the water flow.

You may be getting breakage.  Use a very good conditioner, or the olive oil trick to help minimize breakage.

oh thats good, thats how i usually do it, let the water go through as i comb with a wide tooth comb, just to get it flipped back to shampoo/condition it and to rinse.

How exactly am I supposed to 'work it'?  When it was shorter I would just squirt the shampoo on to my hands and then rub it into my hair until it lathered up, but with long hair (shoulder-length or a bit longer), the first handful of shampoo doesn't do anything, and it takes 2-3 to get any lather, and by that point I have a bunch of broken hair stuck to my hands.  I don't know how to get it to lather without using tons of it at once :(.

get it on the hair near the forehead and make quick, short wiping motion moving it back along your hair, itll foam and move down to where you need it :P may need to add a little water if your not getting enough foamage.

apply shampoo and add water to get a good lather, then work it in with your fingers swirling it around, pulling it together and massaging your scalp at the same time. Rinse well. It's the conditioner that really needs to be worked into the strands. I start with a big pile of it (a palm full) on top and run my fingers through to the ends, carrying the conditioner along and working it in with my fingers or between my thumb and other fingers. Do this several times until your fingers basically flow through with no resistance. Do NOT force a tangle! You will end up with a handful of hair. Try to pull it apart from the sides to the center of the tangle, a few strands at a time. Rinse out the conditioner basically the same way. I have to use a lot of conditioner but I get almost zero breakage. I comb it out after washing with a very large toothed comb with lots of space between the teeth. Last I apply a dab of good silicone based smoothing serum like Garnier Sleek & Shine, working it in with my fingers from roots to tips. This seals the hair, and makes it shiny and and prevents frizzies when it's dry. I rarely ever use a hair dryer unless I'm really in a hurry because it really dries out your hair which makes it more brittle and contributes to breakage. Once it's dry I finish by brushing with a natural bristle brush to bring out the shine.

The one thing that really helped with the breaking/pulling out was HRT. It even caused an increase in my hair density, though all those new ones growing in short can be a royal pain frizzing out all over the place, especially in damp weather. That's when I discovered the smoothing serum can help with that.

What about shampoo and conditioner brands? I've been using garnier fructis over the past few months BUT I swear my ponytail feels thinner and I have had a lot of hair coming out which I just put down to being normal with longer hair. But I've just been reading bad stuff about garnier plus it's really cheap which no doubt means it's full of cheap crap ingredients.
I'm open to organic products but they change depending where you are in the world, I just want to use products that are not harsh or filled with too many nasty chemicals. :P

well, im not an expert hear, but a general rule of thumb iv heard alot: get suggestions from licenced hair stylists and buy salon brand hair care stuff, which makes sence, they want you to have nice hair, they make money because you have hair :P

I know they want us to have nice hair but I still see them as middle people for marketing. Not saying it's not the best.. but it could still do the same thing as a cheaper brand. This is what sucks it would take a life time to go through every brand to find one that works well and is safe.
I think I might go back to trying organic products as the thought of lots of harsh chemicals including sodium lauryl sulfate running through my hair is off putting, plus I'm going to go back to using apple cider vinegar as I stopped about a year ago when life got complicated :P
It's just that I've also read bad stuff about organic products as well...!!!...*screams* ..what is truth....is there such a thing ....*goes crazy*.

I have been using the Garnier Sleek & Shine stuff... shampoo & conditioner, then a leave-in conditioner for after I get out of the shower (otherwise it gets dry and frizzy again).  I'll have to keep an eye out for the smoothing serum, sounds like it might be the missing ingredient.

ask your stylist what she uses and what she would suggest for your hair type, cuz every ones hairs diffrent and needs diffrent stuff, dry hair needs moisture, oily hair needs a little dryness to get just right, a good stylist will tell you truethfull the good stuff to use, and a really good one can tell you cheap brands :P get a good relationship with your stylist ;)

I talked to my ex about this last night and she's put me onto a trusted brand, she's a health nut like me and she found a good organic brand that is chemical free yay!!!! So I will try that, my hair is normal so it doesn't require anything special, my old stylist who I haven't been to for years but may need to soon was always interested in selling me brands that they were commissioned to sell, I don't know I can be highly sceptical on such topics. *shrugs* The brands that most 'professionals' push are full of chemicals as they're not bothered by them.
But... I think I've found my brand yay! ^_^
