I always liked "Bethany" but what I did was Google a list of the most common names for the year i was born and a couple years on either side...then picked out the ones I liked best...and from those eliminated those in use by close friends or relatives who I thought might not enjoy having me use "their" name

Though i confess that since I "settled" on the one I chose, I've had a couple others pop up that made me have second thoughts. But it just seems a bit weird after I've announced myself as Laura to alter it now.

Lily!  I love names that are actual things, they sound so sweet and feminine.  I'm talking about names like Grace, Violet, Hazel.  Ones like that.

Hehe this is how I did it, too. ;D But it's one thing to find a database of names, but it's another thing to actually pick one. It's not very easy to wade through an ocean of names, it's quite overwhelming ;D

Here are some of the names I like the most (I was wanting a "cute" name):
Hazel (currently using this name)
Kelly
Vikki (Victoria)
Zoe
Emily
Crystal/Krystal
Faith

When I chose my name Jessica it happened to be the most popular name from my year of birth and the other big factor for me was there was no one else in my family with that name. I was given some good advice when choosing the name.

1. Pick and age appropriate name
2. One your happy with
3. Try and go for a "popular" name as it will help with passing/blending
4. Get a tape recorder or something like that and introduce yourself with your chosen name to get  an idea of how it sounds and feels.

Also....if the only time you write in Cursive is when you sign your name (which is the case for me) practice writing the names you are thinking about and see which ones come most natural too you.

I love the middle name i have in mind but i could never use it in a signature because it's just too "busy" in cursive.

I got my first name rather strangely we had gone in to Starbucks 3 different times and as i was well along in transition and told them Don but in the south Don and Dawn are said the same and with presenting a woman appearance they put Dawn on the cup,i just figured go with it and my middle name was Dean i just put an na  hence Deanna on it which also kept my initials the same which i found out later came in handy as you don't realize how often you sign with your initials!!

There are some great suggestions for names here, some of which I've added to my ever growing list of names I made to choose from.

I used to sign my posts with Heather, however I decided to take a step back and realized I didn't wish to commit to a name just yet. Though that name is still in the mix, I also like the name Sienna among others!!

I LOVE Heather, but there doesn't seem to be many heathers (outside Locklear) in my age range.

Besides, Heathers are young and hot, not middle aged and pudgy...

I choose the name Shannon because it is unisex which helps with transition.. anything to make it that much easier. For those that look at me in a waiting room and think I'm male then when my name gets called their jaw won't drop on the floor so readily! And it looks normal next to Mr or Ms, though I now see more Ms than Mr on my paperwork which is graciously welcomed!
Plus when I am post-op I shall change it again to something more feminine, as a reward! When I have to fill out paper work and provide my previous name it will be Shannon not that horrible guy name that I don't want to follow me around for the rest of my life!!! >_<
So... female names ...hhmmm
I like:
fern
destiny
harmony
audrey
cheyenne
amelia
monique
hazel (I agree)

Yes, a name topic, I love names, I wish Onomatologist (scientist of the study of names) was an actual job because I'd kick butt at it.

now the thing is, you really want to pick a name that feels truly comfortable. I picked the name I was going to be named (until I was born, and they found out I had a penis >:( ) which was Maeghan Shaundra (Shaundra being the middle name). Neither Maeghan nor Shaundra are really favourite names of mine at all, but they fit me. If your mother was going to name you Victoria, but you don't like it, you can always try a variation of the name:

* Nike (Victoria was the goddess of victory in roman mythology, Nike was the original greek goddess, unfortunately the shoe company ruined the usage of it)
* Victoire, Victorine (French)
* Vihtorina, Viktorina (Finnish)
* Vitorria, Vitoriana (Italian)
Nicknames forms (which can then either made the full official name, or you can use another name that has the same nickname)
* Rory
* Ria
* Roria
* Tori, Torrie
* Toria
* Vic
* Vicci, Vicky, Vicki, etc.
* Vii
* Vivi
* Vicks, Vix

now if you still don't like the idea of using your originally proposed name, you should make sure the name you pick has some meaning behind it for you. I suggest looking for names that fit your racial heritage or have some sort of Etymological or historical significance to you. example:

another reason I picked Maeghan Shaundra is because they both fit my heritage of German / English / Irish, that spelling of Maeghan being the Irish form, Shaundra being a somewhat popular name in Germany, and being a feminine form of Shaun, which is the Black Irish spelling of Sean, an Irish name. (my godfather is Black Irish and named Shaun, so it's also fits the traditional pattern for middle name to be after the god parent.)

If you ever need in Etymology done on a name, feel free to send me a private message asking.

Ah, see what I said?  Names that are actual things sound so sweet.  Like a lot of the one's Muffin mentioned.  Heather's a great example.  Like the plant, I mean.  Although their is a limit I think.  Names like Precious or Sun Temple (yeah, I knew someone named that...) aren't my favorites.

Also, is Shannon unisex?  I've never heard of any guys being named that.  It might be an Irish thing.

Shannon is not unisex, it's actually a Masculine Name. it only became a feminine name when it was introduced to victorian US. so yes, in practice, it's Unisex.

Citation? PLEASE. I did a lot of research on the name before I chose it and I never came across anything like this. And if I did I'd consider it BS.
"In practice", wtf lols.
Obviously someone that lives a sheltered life decided to unload a subjective opinion that was utter BS and someone (let's say YOU) read it and believed it then stupidly pasted it on. Congrats for making a fool of yourself. Enjoy.

Just for the record (for those easily influenced) Shannon IS unisex, full stop.
p.s. because I don't live a sheltered life I know (in person) several people, male and female with the name Shannon, uncanny.

No need to react so violently, I know several male and female Shannons myself. however the usage of it as a female name is only recent, and by recently I mean in the past 200 years. I've researched and studied names all my life, particularly names of Irish Origin, Shannon is a corruption of the Irish Gaelic words that mean "Taken from the River" originally Shannon was only a Male Name, the feminine form being Siobhan (pronounced Shevan), however with the difficulty for nongaelics to pronounce Siobhan and the extreme Americanization that occurred during the immigration boom in mid to late 1800's, many irish immigrants named Siobhan changed there name to Shannon, making it a Unisex. Etymologically speaking it's a Masculine Name, as it was never intended for female usage, however in practice, practically speaking, as in how it is actually used, is Unisex.

I also stick to the name my parents picked out before I was born. To be honest; my male name is, to me, extremely ugly, and always has been. My female name isn't even an official name; rather, it's a compilation of both my grandmothers. Funny enough; it resembles Jeanne, which ís a real name.
No way I'm going to call myself Jeanne, though. *laughs* I'll stick to my parent's original.

The reason why: It feels more real than picking your own name. It feels more... Like it's really me. You know; like everyone could pick their own name, if they wanted to, but it wouldn't actually be their real name?

So no; I'm not going for it because of aesthetics. I'm going for it because it's 'real.'

Oh how sensitive and empathic for you to POINT out that my name that I know as being unisex was ONCE, like 200years ago wtf was once male. OH *claps* thank you... you really know how to make someone feel special with your facts and figures. again THANK YOU. *sigh*.
Was it worth it?

Strange logic, but I don't feel it's necessary to denounce other peoples names in the process. I can assure you that names that people pick for themselves are also very much REAL. And not just for aesthetics. I'm sorry it's just from where I'm sitting it looks a little condescending to suggest that other people here picked their names because it looks sexy or because it's this that or whatever.

I'm so sorry if that's how it came across... I tried to explain my personal reason for it; that's all.
And with aesthetics, I didn't mean anything 'sexy.' I love the name 'Tiffany' to bits; I think it's really beautiful. It has a lovely ring to it, for me. Nothing sexy about it.

I used that word as an example amongst a "this that or whatever". So there's no need to latch on to that word to try and use it against me? lol. I am sorry the way it came across as well.
Bad day. *goes back to bed*.
