I know an trans-woman who has a lot of masculine interests. do any of you trans-men have a bit of a feminine side to your personality? i can't really think of anything with me, but i thought it is a relevant question to ask.
Yep.
I jokingly say that if I was male I'd be the most stereotypical gay guy you would ever meet, minus the 'voice'. I'm horribly feminine and I like a lot of stereotypical feminine things: sewing, cooking, crocheting, etc. I enjoy getting my hair and nails done, I love shopping...Yep, I definitely have a feminine side to me, but I also identify as male.
Yeah I have some. But I'm not sure if it's a "side" or just some old habits. I enjoy cooking every once in a while (though I am horrible at it), and cleaning sometimes (Definitely not trying to stereotype but that's how I was raised). But those kinda things...but other than that, not really. I have always been pretty masculine. Never put on make-up or dressed up womanly or anything. But that's just me.
I actually can't think of any feminine interests. All mine are quite stereotypically male. How boring...

Same here.
I was always too masculine, never liked girly stuff.
uh, perhaps it would be helpful if I had a list of what is considered masculine or feminine.
As it is I'm just me and really don't think about whether what I'm doing is masculine or feminine. I just do it because I enjoy it.

Yay! I'm not the only one!
I love cooking...as long as I don't have to do the dishes. I don't like getting dirty...and the dishes get my hands dirty...I'm such a girl... XD Not afraid to admit it, though. I scream quite a bit...even more than 'girls'...-.- and I scream like Timmy's Dad from Fairly Oddparents...
lol, well I'd be more towards the bottom option then the top, Ryan. Unfortunately I don't know my way around an carburettor but I would be thrilled to learn!
Let's see, I like procrastinating, sitting in front of the computer, writing twisted erotic fiction, playing video games, dancing to my ipod and sex. I garden a bit and read biographies occasionally. I parent my kids and we take walks to the park. I dress comfortably and can spend a little bit of time shopping if there is a good selection. I exercise all the time, cardiovascular and free weights and do many manly push-ups.

I've got a dishwasher...but I still have to rinse the dishes off.
I'd scream...and then I'd run from the room. And spiders *shudders*. Spiders are the worst, I can't get within ten feet of them without squealing and possibly crying...
Then you know exactly how I scream. xD I'm not kidding in when I say I scream just like Timmy's Dad.

That's a fascinating sort of insect; poisonous, it hunts down other insects, especially poisonous spiders, in your house and eats them. Not dangerous to humans, though the bite swells a bit. Sadly, it tends to keep to the ground floor and basement levels.

This.
However, if we're speaking of what American culture deems to be stereotypically feminine qualities, I have a ton and a half! (There
is a reason I also identify as genderqueer. XD) Let's see... I practically
define nurturing. I like cute and pretty things (and often squeal in glee when I see them), though my idea of what is cute or pretty is, I suppose, far from stereotypical (i.e. arthropods are amongst the cutest things ever). I delight in wearing brightly colored skirts and jewelry. I'm an incredibly emotional person. Need I go on?
P.s.- That critter is really adorable. Do you know what they're called?
I have a lot of soft toys and cute stuff. I like singing and dancing to Lady Gaga. I like cooking. I read autobiographies written by supermodels. I like celebrity gossip. I like to dress well and have good hair. I secretly want to learn hairdressing. I talk in a squeaky voice to my cats. I purchase and eat cupcakes.
but guess what...
SO DO ZILLIONS OF CIS GUYS! Including heaps that I know!
I'm at art school though.

I think most queers like singing and dancing to Lady Gaga. Funny story... a couple of my gay male friends got up on a balcony at school and turned up some Lady Gaga music where people down below walking to and from classes could hear and started dancing to one of her songs (apparently they had memorized one of the music videos). And the funny thing is the balcony belonged to the LGBT center at our university.
Lol, that's awesome.

This would be why, I suspect. I cannot think of more than two who do these things, and both are unusually flamboyant homosexuals. Their behavior is considered abnormal by the rest of us, obviously. Cute, but also vaguely disturbing.
In my experience, the majority of transmen have far more feminine personalities, measured by traits and also by cognitive/emotional bias, than any but the most flamboyantly homosexual biological males. (The complementary observation holds for transwomen.) I wouldn't bother trying to apply normative statements to the fact; you are what you are, to reiterate the Berraesque tautology.

What the...
Thanks, Doc.
I like to cook, and am pretty good at it, but how I cook is like Remy from Ratatouille ;) (I enjoy creating new dishes and experimenting with food...not general household cooking...and I don't like cleaning up after myself either). My brother also does this, and we like to cook together (we make up crazy ->-bleeped-<- all of the time). Other than that...idk...I guess I like stuffed animals. My interests are pretty neutral/masculine.
No real really feminine interests. I'm not nurturing, don't like kids, quite cold by default. But, I'm also not very masculine and have feminine moments. Pretty passive, there you go. Traditionally feminine I guess, but it doesn't really seem gendered to me.
In any case, nothing wrong with having a feminine side. As far as I know, most guys seem to have a bit of a feminine side. It's just really, really rarely shown. Well, vulnerability is considered feminine and everyone has vulnerable moments, however rarely. We are probably more accustomed to feminine things and maybe our egos aren't as fragile (some of us.)
I know that playing with dolls doesn't make me a girl, and if I want to do it I will. I just don't want to, lol.
I like designing fashions...sometimes the fashions even look almost normal. :D There's some women's fashions I really like..just can't bring myself to wear them right now. I like cute stuff like Bento boxes and My Little Ponies. Occasionally I'll get in a sewing, beading, or cross-stitching mood. I love shopping.
To balance it out, I love computers and video games and doing the occasional very minor repair on my car or working on some geeky project like lego models or trying to make an antennae. I don't much like to clean and am not any good at interior decorating...my place looks like a typical bachelor apartment aside from the occasional My Little Pony here and there.
I think my two sides equal out. For every masculine thing I do there is a feminine side to it and vise versa. The more male things I enjoy would be; fishing, driving fast, taking things apart (to rarely be put back together), not cleaning, pwning some noobs on the interwebz, and shooting guns.
Then there's the fem side which would be things like; Cooking, picking out cloths for my girlfriend (I believe her to be color blind sometimes >_<), patching cloths, and some small bits of sewing.
Past that I really dont know.

Well, we're brought up to be OK with it (mostly...for some of us it doesn't take). Most little boys are brought up to be ashamed of it.
That being said, it's not true for all of us. My fashion sense consists largely of "Have I seen something kind of like this on another person my age, and does it fit right and hide all my fat lumps?" My decoration is "Hey, this is cool, let me put it on the wall." My personal care is "wash everything and cut hair/finger/toenails." I have 6 years of baseball, 4 years as a firefighter, and 5 years as an aircraft mechanic in the Navy, all of which I spent being socialized largely among blue-collar country boys whose idea of an acceptable level of femininity was scraping the dirt out from under our fingernails before we went out drinking. The only thing "feminine" about my behaviour before I came out was that I only drink sweet fruity mixed drinks (and even that I only started in the past couple years - in my foolish youth I was shooting straight vodka and chasing it with Bacardi 151.)
So...despite all that, I'm very gay. I
want to look nice (not that I have a terribly easy time achieving it), have a cute butt and a sixpack lovingly constructed through hours in the gym, walk with a swish, take my girlfriends shopping and dance to Lady Gaga. If I'd grown up in a male body I would have joined my friends who are exactly that type of guy. And since coming out I've been working on being myself a bit more in that respect. But since I spent so much time compensating for my lack of
maleness by being hyper
masculine, I find myself somewhat lost in that world - it's like learning a whole new language. I still walk like I just stepped off the farm, curse too much, respond to far too many situations with "I'd shoot that sonaofab*tch," and am completely lost in the moisturizer aisle.
I never really learned to be a gay guy. And I have to respect the guys who managed to hold on to that aspect of themselves instead of overcompensating...I spent a decade and a half behaving like your cliche self-hating closet case. So I say ->-bleeped-<- it - if you're able to hold on to your feminine interests, as far as I'm concerned, that's an indicator that you're more secure in your masculinity than I've ever been. And probably more secure than your average cis guy (it was obvious that a lot of my friends were putting on an act just as much as I was.)
I have to think about this one...
Well, when I get really excited I do this ridiculous wrist/fist thing where I put them up and crunch my upper half and dance a bit. I don't know if anyone knows what I'm talking about? It's almost the squeal thing but I never squeal? I dunno, lol. I'm a very dramatic person...I did take drama and I think I'm a fairly good actor so maybe that's just me. Umm...thinking...
Well, my general interests include: Writing Yaoi (role playing with intense literary skills lol), Korn, Abingdon Boys School, Anime, Half Life, etc. I don't know what you define as specifically as "feminine". Maybe like shopping, manicures, and such but I'm not really into any of that stuff.
I never really thought about this sort of thing LOL XP
Umm I don't have many feminine interests I like soft toys and purple but thats about it to be honest. I'm sure there must be a few other things... *thinks*
OMG.
SPIDER.
KILL IT.
I hate bugs. But there's plenty of guys who hate bugs. My ex gf teases me about it though. Generally I'm a stereotypical male though. I like to cook but again, that's a gender neutral thing. I think it was only thought of as a feminine thing for awhile cause it used to be the women who stayed home to cook, etc. I enjoy wearing gothic guyliner if I'm performing or rarely for the hell of it. I like fishnets. If I was a cisguy I'd have no issues wearing skinny shirts and skinny jeans sometimes. I think if I was a cisguy though, i'd also be full out gay. But not a flamer. Just one of those gay men who you stay away from in gay bars cause they look like they want to kill everyone, but who is really gay themselves. I'm told i look like i want to kill people most of the time but really, I don't. Most of the time. I come off as a very cold person. But I have a sensitive side that I don't show unless you read my blogs or you know me very well.

Bomb the house! Just go to Wal-Mart or somewhere similar and pick up some bug bombs. Then open all of your drawers in your bedroom and take off the covers of your bed and take off the couch cushions. If you have food in the pantry, seal all the food or take it out of the house and open the doors to the pantry....Then turn the bombs on and get the hell out of the house with any your family and any pets.
Bug bombs are the greatest invention ever.
Quote from: Shang on July 16, 2010, 12:16:10 PM
Bomb the house!
If you have a crawlspace, or attic, those should be fogged simultaneously with separate bombs. House centipedes primarily live in basement and crawlspace areas.
Given that house centipedes are arachnophages, if you successfully eradicate the house centipede population, you should probably expect a population of spiders to move into your home in a few months' time. At that point, you may have to re-fog.
Alternately, for a permanent solution, you can close off most of the insect traffic pathways using a combination of caulk, spackle, metallic and polymer screens, and expanding foam, effectively confining the majority of insect traffic to the interstices of the structure. You can also treat those regions with powdered orthoboric acid, which causes severe biological stress to exoskeletal creatures, severely reducing their populations. (Tim Taylor grunt!)

Thanks for the help guys! I'm definately going to do something about it now because it sucks being scared just to be in my own house. I'll let you know how it works
Heh. I've been mulling over this femininity/masculinity malarkey for a while (still trying to figure out what I am and where I fit). My interests are of a gender-neutral "arty hipster doofus" variety. (This includes getting banjaxed and getting my arse in trouble for flipping the bird with no good reason.) Never had any interest in fashion, celebrity gossip, shopping, children and very small dogs, that much is true. Doesn't make me less of a wimp, though. Well, live and toughen up, eh?
And Shade, the centipede you posted is one dapper fella ;)
In my interests I am not anything like a stereotypical woman.
Shoe shopping? I would rather shoot myself. Cooking? Gawd no. Fashion? What's that?
I love wearing eyeliner, but all other makeup bothers me and I avoid wearing it completely, even though I should seriously consider some cover-up.
I am not all that self-conscious of any femininity I may have because ALL men have a touch of it in them. To try too hard to appear hyper masculine will make you fail worse at presenting as male than if you let a little of your girly side show.
I also adore flowers.

And I love insects and arachnids! If I saw one of those house centipedes I'd probably catch it and observe it. They're really cool looking.
I have so many it's simply sad. I am the perfect house husband. I clean, cook, take care of the animals as if they were children, organize EVERYTHING from life to the home.
I do things like pick out Bianca's outfits, keep her schedule and remind her of important dates/holidays/birthdays/appointments. I paint her nails and toe nails.
I like to shop. I run all of the errands. I have female mannerisms (duh). I gossip with the girls at work and hang out with them, yet I don't talk to even ONE man who works with me. I only have one male friend and he is gay. I'm into fashion, I dress people and I dress myself nicely. I take friend's shopping for anything from home decor to clothing. I know more about women's clothes than most of the women I've met in my life. I can give a girl make-up and hair tips, although I myself never wore make-up or did my hair at all. I watch Hallmark movies like crazy. I am scared of most bugs, especially spiders, and will freak out in the even one comes with in a foot of me, I even wake Bianca up to kill spiders for me, lol.
The list goes on and on.
In fact I commonly have people tell me they thought I was gay when I come out as trans because of my female qualities.

Hmm I think I have a feminine side ...it just hides itself well. I'm fairly sporty but that's pretty gender neutral really. I like to cook, read, write, watch vids and hang with friends.
The whole fear of 'creepy crawlies' cracks me up, although I do acknowledge that some people have genuine phobias of these things. Livin in Oz and growing up with spiders and snakes etc (actually had a pet python in one place I lived) they don't bother me at all, even the huntsman spiders that are as big as my hand. Besides they eat all the bugs ;D

Those are the coolest dolls I have ever seen. I recently discovered a secret pleasure of mine is romance like romance episodes of shows I watch or I even write it. XP
Yeah they can be expensive it all depends on what make and if they are limited or not.

I totally have this problem myself. I LOVE romantic moments in shows or movies, in books, romantic songs, art... anything really. I'm a sucker for cheesy romance. However I don't think of it as a feminine trait because for me it's all about the idea of wishing/wanting to be the man in those moments. Romantic television moments totally make me wish I could be the big tall handsome guy *sigh* How depressing.

I saw one on ebay for like 1000$ but it was an anime character so that's probably why it was so expensive. How much did yours cost?

I'm sort of like this, too. Though it seems to be primarily with gay or lesbian romance. It makes me go "aww....I want that...." and then I either get giggly or weepy. I generally get giggly no matter what, but gay romance is more likely to make me depressed.

I know, I totally understand what you mean. Like "I wish I could be that man holding her" or, in my case since I consider myself bi "I wish I could be that man kissing him". XP Yeah I write a lot so it helps me deal with the depression of it I guess lol. I have two novels started actually. ^^
I cry at movies ;n; and books... and sad video games! I'm a big baby.
I 'meow' and 'nyo' for my girlfriend. She forces me, but.. hahaha!
... I think that's it. My girlfriend says I wiggle. But all the guys at the art college I go to act the same way, so maybe I'm just under the qualification of 'weird art student'?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure "weird art student" about sums it up. I was an art student my freshman year of college, and even though I switched majors, I think I'm an honorary weird art student for life-- I find it very disappointing that it isn't commonplace for students of all genders at my new college to hug everyone they know, meow (or make various other animal noises), and flutter their hands... but they didn't do the hand thing until I got there. That one is entirely my fault (but spread like wildfire there, and hasn't passed on to a single student at my new college, which I've now been at for a year... so taht's gotta say something about art students).
Weird art students for the win. (o__o)d
I am seriously glad I'm an art student. I feel much less restricted. Sometimes I even feel more masculine than half the cis guys at school.
I like football, cars and scooters, fishing and gay porn. On the flipside I also like style and have a 200+ collection of My Little Ponies. Also have a fair few gender-neutral interests like TV, writing, working out and long distance running. I find this thread really interesting, especially seeing other writers of gay erotica/'yaoi'. I don't think having stereotypically feminine interests is something to be ashamed of...but I don't tell everyone about the My Little Ponies under my bed :D
Lmao, I am actually super feminine, despite how I look.
Lady Gaga is like, my idol, I have a large collection of yaoi, I hate spiders. With a passion...
Yeah. xD
Ah doll meets yes I've been to many and its true most of the people that have these dolls do have back storys and personalitys (mine included) for them and as for price I do have a few that are worth big money like the doll in the first photo he is a Dollshe SA Saint with the old body type which they no longer make and another I have is a Soom Beryl that has hooves and horns which was only on sale for one month she is now worth prob over $1000 (she is pretty much a full set) although she didn't cost me that when I bought her.
I've spent most of my life trying not to be defined by gender stereotypes. I don't want to start now. If I do something, it's to do with me liking that thing, not whether it's a 'girl' thing or a 'boy' thing. If realising I'm transgendered after all these years has done one thing, it's surely to quit sticking gender labels on behaviour.

you must have a lot of money to be able to have so many of those dolls. 0_0 I can't even afford one of them
Well, all my life I've just been me. I wear clothes because I see them on men and think that it's a look that suits me, or because I spent a lot of time in my father's closet as a kid and just inherited most of his fashion sense, so in that sense, I've definitely been influenced. I'm not highly into fashion, but because my father is a bit prissy, I've come to appreciate the tapered dress shirts and suit coats that he wears so often.
Usually, though, I develop my sense of self on my own. I have an image in my mind of what I am supposed to look like that I don't believe has ever been based on stereotypes, but instead a sort of "inner sense". I probably developed this inner sense when I was about 10 years old; before that, I just wore whatever I was offered, but envied the men in my life.
Behaviorally, I've never displayed "forced masculinity", and don't really understand what constitutes "masculinity" in myself aside from identification with other men, having a very obvious male identity, and seeing myself in the male role in society. I don't spit or act like a buffoon, but women are a different species to me. It's likely that because I was raised in a very liberal environment that I am not stereotypical one way or another. I like it that way.
I like cooking, and I do like slash. Or yaoi. Or whatever you want to call it. That's because a lot of my life, I've identified as a gay man, and that was one way to live vicariously through certain characters. I'm also a writer. I also love music. I've been playing piano for most of my life, as it is a natural talent and something I generally love to do. I also love animals -- primarily, birds -- and I'm interested in the sciences, particularly biology. I am interested in medicine, in anatomy, in infectious diseases, to a lesser extent pharmaceuticals. Drugs are interesting. I've got a very knowledge-oriented existence. In my spare time, I like to cook, watch movies, cycle and spend time outdoors with my feathered kids. I would say I'm pretty much not gendered at all in my interests, but if I do like anything feminine, I do not repress it by any means. There's quite a massive difference between being feminine and being female.

I used to have a draw full of steal bonned corsets (a few real leather ones) that I'd bought over the years I sold them on ebay that helped to buy them.

I've said before I collect bjd's (ball jointed dolls) and I do love shopping but apart from that I think thats about it?
I collect those too! C: Mine are my pride and joy. Mine is like my child. o_O
At the risk of sounding like one of those creepy doll owners that Kvall spoke about, they honestly do help me therapeutically. Ever since I was a child, I've had strong "mothering" instincts I guess you could call them. Basically I have this overwhelming need to take care of and protect people or things, and if I can't, I feel as if I've lost my life's purpose and I might as well go crawl in a hole and die. ._.
So I guess that's some insight on the more feminine side of me. Though I don't really think of it as a feminine thing. I just think of it as a personality quirk.
But uh, to a lesser degree I like make up and fashion. I see them as a form of art and self-expression. So when I say make up, I mean a lot more than what people would typically go out to the movies in. I love the type of make up and fashion that literately turns someone into a walking piece of art work. You know? :D Though for the record, I like the act of applying make up. Actually wearing it? No thanks.
Hmm, other than that I really have no idea. I don't really categorize the things I like into feminine things and masculine things. They're just me things. >.> I like the things I like, regardless of how boyish or girly they are. I don't think I'm any less of a man because I like dolls and artsy fashion make up. Maybe I'm not the most masculine one, but I'm still a boy, and I'm okay with that.
I don't really have many feminine traits, though I do collect ball jointed dolls too. I like shopping too, but not like "OMG SHOPPING!" (well, not all the time....there have been moments - damn you Next Sale!).
Haha...yeah, a few! And they were cause for a lot of self-doubt for a while, and are still an issue limiting my mother's understanding. I usually just tell people I'm an artist and therefore quirky.
I have a thing for kittens and cats. I think they are the most awesome animals on the planet.
I also like costuming...halloween costumes, ren faire, cosplay...oh yeah. (Mum just calls it 'sewing' though...hehe)
And...the clincher...I'm attracted to men. I don't consider myself truly gay as I have zero desire for any kind of sexual relationship with anybody regardless of gender, but I do like to oggle. ;)
Other than that, my interests are pretty masculine or neutral.
I don't think interests are a gender issue at all, really. Some just have stereotypes that I believe are becoming less so as years go by. Women used to be pigeonholed as cooks, nurses, and homemakers...and now look at the world! I've known many guys who cooked better than any of the women I know! I also know a guy who rides a motorcycle and crochets, too.
When I was little I used to be really confused by the things that interested me versus my peers. I liked playing with hotwheels, toy guns, dinosaurs, and action figures while my friends had dollhouses. My family tried to get me interested in more 'girly' things but it never interested me. I finally decided it didn't matter, and went with what I liked, and my parents obliged.
*cough* I have a BJD too...haven't worked on him in years, but I'm determined to paint him myself and make him awesome!
I don't gender-type my interests. I had far too much of that thrust on me as a child ("But you don't want that. It's a boy's toy"). It has kind of put me off it.
But, going slightly OT for a minute, I also find my BJDs to be therapeutic, as you say, KaciKip. I hadn't intended them to be that way, but I somehow seem to have created one that represents my long-time, ideal, male alter ego (and he is my core doll) and a character who is a castrato and whose soul bleeds for not being a "complete man". When I was attempting to reconcile myself to my female lot, I also created a femme fatale female doll who I commissioned clothes for that would mirror my own wardrobe of fetwear. Creating them and writing stories about them (yes, more yaoi) has been enlightening and has almost certainly helped me on my way.
Anyway, as you were.
I think a lot of my interests are fairly androgynous in nature, and I don't have many interests that are 'male/female' oriented. I love drawing, making movies, exercising (jogging, weight lifting, riding my bike), writing stories, etc. I'm not a fan of sports nor do I like overtly girly things like wearing make up or dresses or um... whatever other things girls enjoy ^^;.
I suppose I have a few traits that are a little... off.
When young women compliment me, I tend to lose my conversational stride (regardless of the fact I don't play for that team).
Today I picked up some anti-acne stuff at the supermarket, 'cause I'm noticing the T is starting to cause a few issues in the skin department.
Sometimes I clip my nails - they look too girlie if I don't. I put some goop in my hair every morning so it sits correctly. I enjoy a good chai tea. I don't like exercise. I tend to be rather liberal, and enjoy different opinions and cultures.
I have pet goldfish I'm rather fond of, and spoil (though that is the extent of my "nurturing").
That said - I also like cars, computers, trains, offbeat humor, beer, the internet, joking misogyny, and not wearing pants ;).
Spiders and snakes are awesome.
And women completely baffle me
Cough.

Not sure how clipping nails is feminine - what do you think masculine guys do? Gnaw them off? :)
And anyone who calls their hair product "some goop" is...well, not feminine. LOL.
