Hi,
I'm just seeing if anyone is doing better than I am at finding work. I keep applying and getting ignored. I even broadened the kind of work I'll do and am including general office work and production work in local manufacturing companies.
I'd start my own business but I do better as a sidekick.
I hope others are doing better.
In a word, NO. And it is from the lack of trying. I have vast experience in retail, but yet I can not find work. In a state that has over 10% unemployment there is a lot of competition for jobs.
It's just the economic depression I fear. Nothing to do with gender or anything.
EVERYONE is finding it tough out there. (including me and in 30 years I have never been unemployed).
For a year I've been looking for a job, but I can't find one. They keep knocking me aside for people with "more experience" when I have more experience, but I also have an Associate's and that seems to make people not hire me.
I haven't managed to find one yet but I don't think it is discrimination because I never make it to an interview for them to even meet me. I wish everyone luck. If your in the US I suggest checking with Walmart. I sadly don't live close enough but they are almost always hiring at every location I go to.
I've been doing contract work now for 20 years. When recessions bite, I'm the first to be out of work, as I am now. I've had 1 week of work this year.
I realise it's easy to say, but I always put aside most of my money for hard times. I budget on half of what I'm paid. I don't buy things I don't really need. I always try to save whenever I can. I paid off all my debts as a first priority, after food.
As I siad, easy to say, but I and I think most of us have no choice really. New clothes may seem nice, but do you really need them?
Sorry, this doesn't sound very helpful. But I've managed to survive for 20 years like this. After my experience in the health services, I decided my mental health simply couldn't take any more stress of being trapped.
When you do get a job, may I respectfully suggest you stick to the priorities, debt, savings, food.
I sell handcrafts, repair computers, go online to sites like fiverr.com and in general, I find work anywhere.
I just happen to be too lazy to do anything serious.
Also, with 5 USD I'll eat for one day, so it's not like I have many obligations.
That allows me to not need a "real" job.
Also, I'm in México.

Once I do get a job, I'm paying off my debt (which isn't very much--thank god for the GI Bill) and I'll be paying just for food and gas and vet care (which I have recently started doing because living month to month blows). Hell, I even canceled by cable service because it was costing an arm and a leg--I'd go with a cheaper internet provider, but there aren't any internet providers other than the one I have in my area.
Zaida, thanks for the site! I can use it to bring in some extra cash, maybe. I sure as hell know how to make 5 dollars stretch a long way, and it helps that my dollar store here has everything.
@Alexander: Wal-mart won't hire me again. I had to quit pretty soon after being hired the first time because they weren't going to give me the time to spend with my dad who had just gotten back from being deployed in Qatar. I'm too fussed really. The people were horrible, and they had me working 10 to 5 am.
I always have trouble, I'm sort of lucky - I'm kind of useful to a school - so I'm fairly sorted at the moment,

The walmart in Kingston MA is hiring. I've considered it but my mother works there.

I'm not a consumer. i just pay the bills for shelter and food. I had a little money saved but had to spend it over the past year and a half.
Took me about 4 months to find a job. Heard lots of "your over qualified". I applied for well over 100 jobs in the end that I was more than qualified for and even more that I was truely way over qualified for. Just the ecomony, know it doesn't hlep but I htink that is just what the problem is these days.
Good Luck
Myles
No luck so far too many people lay off jobs are harder to get than the last time.I keep trying but my health also plays a role into what I can do not a simple situation to be in. I want to work and earn a nice income with benefits. :(
Not much luck here either. I've been looking since I moved back home in December, and have only had short term temp jobs so far. 6 weeks of phone sales for a catalog company, 3 weeks the next holiday, a couple 1 day catering jobs, but nothing I can really rely on at all. I have 5 years of food prep and deli counter experience and can't get a job making sandwiches.
I have made it to several interviews, so I'm not sure what to think of possible descrimination. I also know that I'm competing with anywhere from 20-40 people for every position I apply for.
I have an interview tonight, and I should hear either way today about a position I interviewed for on Friday, so I'm Crossing my fingers.
Done a week or two of temp stuff here and there at different places, done loads of charity work just to amuse myself
not even had an interview for a "real" job in about 2 years since I lost my last one, it's ridiculous
I haven't worked for around two years now and haven't had an interview for a few months. I'm kinda worried about getting myself into debt and not being able to pay it back on time. I know it's wrong to think that getting an F on all my paperwork will make everything better, and that life will fall into my lap from that. Especially when my dad tells me "have you considered the possibility that you will always have people noticing you and your past?". Well I try not to to be honest because that is no kind of life in my eyes (which is what I basically said amongst other things). I've been dwelling on that for days now and it's eating me.... I'm sick of dark thoughts and feeling like I have to weight it up against reality which doesn't appear to be offering me any breaks. How does one live? It's a joke.
QuoteHow does one live? It's a joke.
not dying and loling.
insane loling.
loling puts food on the table? I wish!
hahahahahahahahhaaa! *bing* ...mmmmmmmmmm deep dish lasagne! ^_________^
Those who are finding it tough to find work in North America may want to consider school bus driving. It's part time work but at least it's work and it also allows one time to seek other part time or full time work that would fit in between.
I'm the Safety Manager here where I live at a branch of one of the largest school bus companies in the world, and we use an online application process. One of my duties is to interview, hire, and train prospective bus drivers, and believe me there is a huge shortage of drivers out there on both sides of the border. I personally hired 11 drivers over the summer and im still three short. Most companies hire with no experience required and provide the training. The only thing that may trip folks up is that many school bus companies do drug testing; we do :)
What do you have to loose? It might be worth your while, at least until you find a job in your field.
PM me if you want links.
Steph
In the past five years, every job I've had came from either a temp service or through friends. All of those jobs made me want to stick a gun in my mouth (figuratively, btw), so now I'm going to grad school. Once I get out, I'm considering going overseas to teach English as a foreign language. Unless of course, I have a giant stroke of brilliance/luck and write a best selling novel. EFL is my back up plan. It pays pretty well in some places.

Please do!
I was extremely lucky and I just got a lab job for the year! I'm really excited about it.
And I seemed to get away with wearing masculine clothing and a tie to the interview, so... here's hoping they won't mind if I present how I want to. :)
There's hope!
I lost the job I had for 4 years in January. I have been applying in a lot of places and putting my resume out there with no luck. The company I worked for went bankrupt and didn't pay me for working there the last 2 weeks. The money they owe me (aka the money I'll never see) would really be nice now...I've got a credit card and a medical bill that need to be paid off soon.
I was very fortunate and landed an IT contract right after the bottom fell out of the economy (and after not getting paid for 3 months). Since I can see the shape that the economy is in i'm working very hard at staying at this company, and so far i've been able to turn a 6 month contract into two years of work (and maybe more).
Before that (during the 3 month no-pay period) I had my resume out on the various on-line resume places, and got absolutely no interest. It was eye opening. I am in a somewhat specialized IT job, with 20+ years of experience, but still the lack of any offers was very concerning.
I have considered whats going to happen after the contract runs out, and I feel that at 47 i'm probably going to have to reinvent myself. Which i've done before.
My wife and i have discussed the possible options, and we've prepared ourselves for the worst - which may include moving anywhere that a job takes us, and possible lifestyle changes.
I may beg for for more days at the temp job I have now. It's really too too far away, though.
can we try to have some sort of online moneymaking scheme now ?
What kind of things do you people do ?
For example, if you were to make some handcrafts, I could sell them both online and offline. It shouldn't take much. But I can't help much with materials. I can tell you what I know of making them.
Also, programming tasks seem to be kind of popular lately, like say you're given a list of things to code, and then you send them. If they're good and work as they should, then you get paid.
These things are things I've done and they seem to work.
What kind of things do you think you can do which don't require a standard employer ?
After the economy kicked my ass I reinvented myself and move to the caribbean. I got a job managing a property with a 1 year contract. I reupped for 2 years now I am about to begin the process of trying to get a 5 year deal. i don't need a lot more money but I would like to get some security and more time off.
I apply or am recruited every time a similar job is available and usually get chosen but when the salary negotiations begin I realize I have a good gig and decide to stay. I can see my value for the next year or so as I am finishing a major project but then when the hard work is done I can see them hiring a rookie to replace me. We'll see. I just have to keep on time and on budget and I think I'll be OK. I hope.
I finally have a job again after 3 months of mostly being unemployed. I taught some horseback riding lessons and had a couple under the table catering jobs, but nothing regular that I can rely on. I'm going back to work in a call center for a catalog company, and hopefully it will last through february. sitting in a cubicle on the phone all day mostly sucks, but I can't afford to turn it down. The Occupational therapist I have done some administrative work for also has some work for me in the next couple weeks too.
If things continue going well, I should be able to buy a car by thanksgiving. Or move out of my moms house, but I think I want a car more.

I'm in I.T. but I'm weak at coding.
I just found out that there is a state program that helps people with all kinds of disability, including social anxiety, to find jobs that fit them. I have an appointment in 3 months. I'm looking for work on my own but these people may have an inside track to finding a job that fits me.

Department of Vocational Rehabilitation
They help people with disabilities get jobs and living arrangements that allow them to live independently with their disability.
thanks.

i work in WM as well. my store has only hired part time, over night stockers, and cashier workers exclusively. no floor or regular hour full time hiring. many i have talked to including myself are concerned day-by-day that they will cut our jobs and or reduce hours down too much.
Keep up the search.

I've been very lucky as I have had good employment for the last 5 years and have got some really good bonuses as well. Last year was tough for the company so the bonus was just "keeping your job." My job takes me to all kinds of crazy places as a project manager. It can be hard not seing my daughters when I have to work 3 months straight without a day off but you have do what you have to do.
I'n addition to 45 hours a week and another 13 hours in the car, I started a side business from a hobby that I can do at my little shop at home. I make custom writing pens that retail for over $250 each (I only get a fraction of that) and up. There are only a handfull of people in the world that do what I do as far as the exotic materials that I use so it makes them VERY unique.
I have been looking into buying and learning Google Sketch UP Pro which is a 3D design software that lets you do models in Google Earth. You could charge thousands of dollars for modelling a project for someone. It's a great sales tool when you are trying to sell multi million dollar projects like I do.
You just have to find a niche and get good at it then sell yourself. It also helps to approach job hunting as a JOB. Get up at 6am and get readyfor the day. Most of my friends that have been unemployed in the last year spend farto much time sleeping in and screwing off. You may also have to do something you don't really want to do or move where you don't want to live...
I'm in this boat as well.
I have been trying to find a job for the last two years, and outside of a temporary job gotten for me by a family friend that I had for a little over a month, I haven't even so much as received a call back from a single person. And to make matters worse, I have zero job experience.
I know Im lucky to have a job right now, but Ive been looking for a second one for a year and Ive had no luck
I have been employed full time for about 3 months now, since mid-august. I feel really lucky, as I had been unemployed for about 2 years before this job. plus its great hours (for me) as I can sleep in until noon and go to work in the afternoon, then drive home around midnight when there is no traffic. :)
I've been looking for work for three years now and so far no luck. It certainly feels like there is no jobs out there, and it bites because I seriously need a job. But no since is giving up because sooner or later I should have some luck.
I had never worked before in my life. At 18 and year out of HS, I had been looking for a job through that time. I wasn't even looking very hard. While I had several interviews, I was never hired, but finally struck one with Disneyland. I was practically guaranteed a job after the interview and began as a seasonal worker. Work ended in September and I applied for a part time position. I was called back in October and now I have a job that respects me being TS. I'm practically stealth at work.
While I found work amazingly well, my father spent two years trying the job he has now and he just started a week ago. He was also orignially fired from his previous job and he's about 55. So yeah.
Just keep looking and you'll find some work. Try temporary things, one time things, seasonal things. They all add up in the end if you can find them. All the while you can find a steady job. Three are jobs out there.
I worked the summer at a kids petting zoo type thing. Hard work out in the heat 8 hours a day at min. wage. Still work though. Unfortunately the place closes after octobers through till june =/ So now i'm out of work again. I've applied to a few places, but I suppose i'm lucky because i'm gong to uni soon and my parents have agreed to cover my costs and living till I graduate from uni. I think it was mentioned, but bus drivers are in demand where I live. I know a little while ago in my city there was such a severe lack of bus drivers kids had to start taking city bus' to school and using public transit. If you're desperate for work, maybe try applying as a bus driver? Um fast food places hire a lot too. If you can find remote ones on the edge of your town, I find they seem to be hiring more than the ones in the city. Walmart is usually hiring too.
Just my two cents.
