So I'm always switching between wanting short guy hair and then wanting long feminine hair. Thought getting a versatile unisex hairstyle would stop these urges, nope.

I've now turned my eyes some shoulder length wigs I found in the $13-17 price range. I don't know if these wigs are a good deal or not (they were labeled 'weave style' and looked OK from what I could tell).  I'm not sure if I use the wig for the lady hair or guy hair.

I'm also wondering about other ways that have satisfied a want for both guy and girl hair.

You could keep one side short, like buzz cut, and one side long! Some people can pull that style off, perhaps you are one!

Sounds like a undercut. While such a style would be fun, it would definitely be impossible to pass as male with it. I had a mullet in the past so I know that wouldn't be quite right either.

You get what you pay for. I need to use a wig. Cheap wigs are just that. OK for a Halloween costume but not much else

The cheap wigs are more like doll hairs. Like a Barbie doll.

don't buy a cheap $20 wig. buying a nice wig fashion wig (as opposed to a costume wig) is actually easier and more affordable than you'd think! I'm a person who has distinctly "male" and "female"-presenting personas and I use wigs for this a lot. It's also really great because my different personas have fairly different friend groups, so as long as I dress differently and do my makeup differently I'm not likely to get approached by the people who know me as my other self - i'm totally different looking. it's awesome.

the wigs that i wear aren't like, cancer-quality real hair sort of thing. I tend to wear fashion wigs, from Japan and Korea. The best brands I have seen at the best prices are Cyperous and Gabalnara. Gabalnara wigs are cheaper and have more styles and colours available, but the fibers they use get tangled or ragged more easily, and you can't use a flat-iron on them or anything. The current wig my girl persona wears is a Gabalnara one that i bought from an american wholesaler called Gabalspice (http://gabalspice.wordpress.com/) and it was $60-$70. I'm currently using my natural hair for myself as a boy but I'm going to switch to a wig for that too soon so i can grow my natural hair into a neutral hairstyle

What about something in between as a compromise?

I like a long fringe on the front (longer than the rest of the hair, though not quite so it gets in the eyes) and halfway down the ears, fine and well layered.

I don't know if that helps or hinders passing, but I feel the hair itself could be seen as equally feminine or masculine.

I agree, you could get an androgynous haircut, something short but when you want to appear feminine you still can. My other recommendation would be to keep your hair short and buy a very good wig that isn't super cheap because cheap wigs suck(Use mine as a reference, and it cost $70 -_-)

you can try a haircut who is mix on both long and short, try having a middle long, or you can get a short haircut during the summer and let it grow out for the winter.

Mullet?

Right now I have a haircut that's a bit longer than my fingers on top (maybe 5"), with the back and sides ideally shaved to a #4 (1/2") and faded down (it's a little grown out right now; getting it done tomorrow). It looks pretty alternative-lifestyle (read: lesbian), but I seem to pass as a guy relatively often with it. Though that might be due to my height (5'10"), build (pretty skinny and post-top surgery), and general presentation.

This is a pretty similar cut to mine, but I never gel it up like that; I just straighten the top sometimes, and sweep the fringe to one side.

I also don't have the shaved-in stripes, but now I kind of want them. If only I weren't job-hunting. *sigh*

I like it because it's pretty wash-and-go with my hair texture (slightly wavy with curls at the temples), but I can also pamper myself and style it if I like: put on some straightening serum and blow-dry it, then run my tiny straightening iron through the front part.

I was going to try and edit that first paragraph to get rid of some of the parentheses, but I think I'll leave them.

I cut my hair short 2 weeks ago and it is really something new for me, a lot of people call me boy now on the streets, but i guess sometimes i wish I could be more androgynous. I have a masculine face, while i've been born a woman, but with long hair i look feminine, i cna totally understand your wish for looking as both. I LOVE ANDROGYNOUS STYLE and I love to be like that, so I wish my hair could grow just a litle bit back. not too much, cuz i want to be the rebel kind of tomboy/boy/girl. botH!

It's the desire to have both hairstyles that caused me to shave the sides of my hair and do a Chelsea Hawk (that way I could keep the hair up front so I don't look too masculine, or just generally bad). I absolutely miss my hawk since I shaved the middle off and started growing it out. I'd definitely love to get my hawk back, even though I never gelled it. I just always wore it back in a ponytail or just whooshed it off to one side (wow, whooshed is actually a word??? xD) However, with my new job as a pizza delivery driver, I feel that cutting my sides off again would drastically cut my tips down on days when I can't wear my wig for whatever reason.

And on that note, my wig only cost me $25 after tax. It looks real as anything (the hair straightener girl at the mall actually asked me what I use on my hair!), it's SOOOO soft, and it's a great way to be versatile with my hair while I wait for it to grow out (my hypothyroidism actually killed my hair, and that's ultimately why I had to cut it all off; my hair just looks too bad naturally short because it refuses to style, so I felt like I needed a wig). And it's a slightly longer wig, coming down to armpit length. So don't think you can't get a good wig for cheap. Just make sure that it's from a reputable wig shop, and not an actual costume wig. My friend says my wig is softer than the $60 one she has of the same length!

With wigs, you get what you pay for. Look for lace front wigs, so you'll be able to style them. And for sake of ease, make your female hair the wig/s and get your hair cut in the short style you're thinking of- it'll be easier to get under the wig.

I spent much of my life dealing with this. The short, most realistic answer is that you can't. You have to make choices in life. However, time passes and hair grows. I've spent periods of years with long lady hair and periods of years with short man hair (sorta, anyway).

A wig is very hard to pull off as looking like your real hair. If your lifestyle is such that looking flamboyant or eccentric works for  you, you might manage. Sadly, though, most wig wearers are just people who convince themselves their wig looks real while everyone else around can tell it's a wig and thinks it looks a bit pathetic. That said, I love wigs and have several of my own, though I don't wear them often.
