So I got done with one party and about to go to another on Wednesday.

Halloween is one of my favorite Holidays. Not because of wanting to dress up in girl's clothes but because of the fact that some of my best parties are on Halloween ...and I love the awesome ideas others have when they picked a costume.

One of the things I make sure I don't do is to fill the mold of a stereotypical "slutty" costume that many people have this need to fulfill.

Maybe it's my feminist form coming out and I most certainly welcome debate but I do not find slutty outfits for Halloween flattering at all....it just seems to be catered for men eye candy than having the girl dress up for fun. So I made it an objective this year to dress in a costume without having to look "slutty."

At the last party and at my work's "Harry Potter Night" I dressed up like a Gryffindor Student. And no, I did not do the slutty Hermoine outfit. I actually got a really cool costume...rented an official outfit.


I won first place and I wasn't wearing a skirt 10 inches above my knees with fishnets (heh...imagine that)

The next party I am going to, I am going as a Vampire. Yeah yeah yeah, I was out of ideas. But this is my outfit:



Notice...no ultra short skirt.

This is one of the things I have noticed. Many transgirls who dress up for Halloween wears these skimpy things. I mean, don't get me wrong...cisgirls do too...but if I saw a transgirl wearing a costume that wasn't a leotard or a ultra mini skirt it was only a couple of occasions out of many.

So, just some questions. Not being judgmental but raising a type of awareness:

1. Why do many transgirls feel the need to wear a slutty costume versus a non slutty costume
2. Why do any woman (trans, cis, whatever) feel the need or desire to wear a slutty costume versus a non slutty costume.
3. Do you think wearing a slutty outfit (as trans) fulfills a stereotype that many have who are ignorant of transgender people?

Like I said, there is no specific right or wrong response. I have my own convictions on this matter but I wanted to hear from you.

I think that - as the kids intended it - that people dress the opposite for Halloween.  Good kids are devils, nice girls dress like hotties, wimps dress like jocks, and jocks dress like nerds.

Actually all the people in SF this year are not going slut, they are going orange.  What's worse than sex?  Sports.

I only say "slutty costumes" because that's the general name of them...that and "sexy costumes." However, I noticed more men call them "sexy costumes" and more women call them "slutty costumes"...at least with the ones I have talked to

That would reinforce my theory that it's good girls pretending to be 'bad' by dressing 'naughty' once a year.  Last thing a real slut wants is to be called a slut.

or it could be someone who always wanted to dress like that but never had a chance to due to social "viewpoints" so they use Halloween as a way to "unleash"

No one in big urban areas is so repressed.

the places i have lived at have often looked down on these dress appearances. Some do it during halloween because it tends to be a "get out of jail free card."

It's because there is no anonymity, and no 'private space' stuff - everyone is all into everyone's business.  I work a lot of raves, and I'm damn sure that no daddy is letting Sweet Little 16 out of the house looking like that, and I'm sure they look like angels when they leave (and when they come home) but they can get away, change, and rave on, then change back and no one's the wiser, and the rest don't care.  The only people at the rave are the peer group, so no nosy parkers.

I think I'd prefer the term "sexy" over "slutty".

I don't get to dress for halloween this year (unless a uniform counts), but I'd certainly appreciate the opportunity to dress up and feel "sexy" for one night.  1) it's halloween - anything goes, right?  2) It's halloween. You can be as outrageous or conservative as you like and no one will think less of you - they might actually think more of you.  : )

That's one argument. And the thread was NOT about the word slutty vs sexy. Please reread it

It's about dressing "slutty" or dressing "non slutty" and how that may impact our own social perspectives and is it just fulfilling the stererotype that transgender people do it just for fetish clothing and nothing more

Also, it isn't just men who have an image of what slutty is. Women would do the same thing. Matter of fact, I've seen more women raising an awareness that it isn't generally a good thing to dress slutty for Halloween. So, no, it isn't just men who sees this. It is also women.

As I stated, I am not the fashion police and I wont go around arresting someone who dresses up like that for Halloween, but I cannot ignore a fundamental issue that is central to transgender stereotype: which is transgenders like 5 inch stilettos, fishnet thigh highs, micro mini skirts, 3 coats of painted makeup and poor wigs. And when transgender people do this for Halloween...my question is...does this strengthen a stereotype?

Not entirely true.

I know a lot of girls here who are dressing up as a girl because it is something they are and they feel they can only get away with it once a year. For them, this is a solemn day where they can feel as to who they are without fear of persecution and/or judgement from family and friends.

I think since dressing "slutty" isn't something one can do so often without having their image go down, some take the opportunity of Halloween to do it. It gives them an excuse to try something new, or that they don't do often. In a trans way of seeing it, it could be that the person sees "sexy" as "especially feminine", and jump on the occasion of having an excuse for it, especially if they're not full-time yet.

And well, for people who'd want to try something wild for once and wear something really audacious, wearing a mask or something else that makes them hard to recognise is a pretty good way of doing it more anonymously.

Alternatively, many people see parties as ways of finding a partner, mostly, I think, for a pretty short, physical relationship. Halloween being a larger party than usual, it's only natural that such people would use the occasion to be as, uhm, sexually inviting as possible. And since a lot of people who aren't actually looking for a one-night stand do dress relatively sexy at Halloween, well, bets are up. So the non-slutty become kind of slutty, and the kind of slutty have to go super slutty to keep their status as pervert magnets.

I do have to agree with Halloween parties and hooking up. I don't think I've been to a Halloween party yet where someone didn't hook up upstairs.

I've never seen mtf's doing the slutty thing for halloween, maybe drag queens.

I think most mtf's realize that their skeletal structure doesn't lend itself to dressing in a revealing manner (unless they're extremely lucky/ got blocks pre puberty).
