Activist discusses transsexual challenges

Writer, civil rights activist and professor Jennifer Finney Boylan gave a fun and insightful speech about her experiences living a transgendered life Nov. 1 in the Union Ballroom.

"I stood at the edge of a cliff," Boylan said. "I was playing a game with the wind and thought, 'OK, this is what you came to do, do it.'

"Just then a huge gust of wind came and blew me on my back and I landed in a pile of moss. Then I heard a voice say, 'Are you alright? You're going to be alright.' I believe this was the voice of my future self, letting me know everything was going to be OK."

"I did adolescence as a boy," Boylan said. "Then, in my 30s and 40s I started taking estrogen and I went through adolescence again. It sucked; it was like stepping on thin ice. Looking in the mirror and asking, 'Is that me, is that me, is that me?'"
