even though I had lots of hell growing up as a kid, my fondest memories of Christmas was actually the specials on cbs of ruldoplh and frosty, these cartoons brought tears to my eyes and much joy. I still watch them to this day.

How do you embed a you tube video on susans? I cant seem to do it.

I think the Rudolph video has a special place for trans people. How many of us felt like misfits throughout our childhood?

I'm with you Shawn. I still cry when Santa comes back to pick up the misfit toys.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

Nobody wants to play with a Charlie-in-the-box!

I completely cover the inside of my condo with lights and other decorations.

Last year I was moving around Christmas time so I didn't decorate. I still don't have anything, and I usually don't start decorating until after Advent starts anyway.

My apartment is a bit small, so I was thinking of getting one of those Christmas tree flags and just hanging it on a wall.

We'll probably drag our stuff down from the attic in a day, or so... Mostly just the tree and stockings - we don't put up any outdoor decorations or lights...

Then pictures of the cats, and a picture of the dog with something Christmasy strapped to his head - and it's a wrap!
I ain't scared... I just don't want to mess up my hair.

Today I put the computer by the piano and set up the microphones and recorded The Rebel Jesus by Jackson Browne.  BEST CHRISTMAS SONG EVER!

One of these years I'm gonna have a sloth Christmas tree ornament that clings to a branch.

I love watching some version of   A Christmas Carol

As for the religious significance I was once behind a couple looking at a large and very beautiful Nativity scene in a shop window and heard them say ' Some people try to bring religion into anything' Cracked me up

I like A Christmas Carol.  I did play Scrooge in a class read one year in Junior High.  It is time for family.  I am making a dish for my club's holiday potluck this Saturday.  Assurance from an astronomer, we will still be here on December 25!

Well with a prediction like that I'd better stop using my credit card, I was hoping I didn't have to repay it

This particular astronomer needs to get her finger out and fix up the mount on her 10" Dobsonion. Maybe over the Xmas break....?

As for "Scrooge" I always liked most of the Bill Murray version (Scrooged) though I find the ending very weak and OTT. The main sequences are brilliant especially the Ghost of Xmas Present.

Dobsonian is a dirty word around here!  I do have a 10" scope, but on a GEM plus two cameras!  That mount had been fixed years ago and has been used this past summer.  My friends have Dobs, I look through their scopes and they get to see my images!
An old one with the Teflon/Ebony Star bearings?  Got the right amount of "sticktion"?

I live on the outskirts of city and have well 'developed' gardens around me. I need a scope I can move easily and that is light because I no longer have the strength to move the old mount so I made my own, but I need to finish the mount. It is f/5.5 and on low power I get down to 13th mag with a 0.6 deg field. Good for variables, the moon and planet gazing. DSOs are not that good round here even with narrow band filters.

In my case, steel bearings with worm screws to lock and adjust. Its only a dobber....

What should we buy as a basic  to look at planets type  telescope?

I bought something a few years ago and still can't focus it .

Ok Joelene tell us  how to buy a basic telescope and beyond. What do we look for what do we pay? Kids, teens and adults

Most small telescope sold in dept stores and the like are junk with a meniscus lens and a wobbly mount. Most amateur astronomers use reflecting telescopes because they are considerably cheaper for a given size, but they are harder to maintain and operate than a refractor (has lenses rather than mirrors). Unfortunately refractors are more expensive because a really good lens is far harder to make than a really good mirror.

There are also "mixed" optical systems and they can be really good for general astronomical use, so here are some links

For a refractor, no less than 3" lens, preferably a 4" lens http://store.meade.com/terrastar-90-altazimuth-refractor.html

For a portable "mixed" catadioptric system, something like a Celestron or Meade but these are not cheap http://store.meade.com/lx80-schmidt-cassegrain-6-f-10-with-multi-mount.html

Bev,
I was just teasing about that scope.  That 10" of mine was a old Meade DS-10 I bought new.  It does not resemble the Meade I bought since I modified the mount with a larger drive gear, the new mirror cell, new sonotube with three 1/8" thick aluminum rolled sheet armatures to hold the mirror cell and the focuser.  The middle armature inside the paper sonotube is the hard point for the mount cradle and the counterweight bracket.
The secondary mirror mount was a straight bar across the inside the tube, the new one a regular spider.  This improves the roundness of the star image.  The old bar produced two diffraction spikes on bright stars and made the dimmer stars ovate.  A regular 4 vane spider produces 4 spikes and the stars appear more rounder.
The drive corrector was of a "Muntz" design, so I gutted out the cheap electronics after it stripped out the gears in a motor by overheating it and I made a new circuit with an additional autoguider port.
The Ebony Star was a textured Formica glued on surface used in the bearing with Teflon blocks as the other surface in a Dob mount.  This was used by the do-it-your-selfers (ATMs or Amateur Telescope Makers) to make their own.  These surfaces were on the older manufactured scopes until the Ebony Star surface was no longer manufactured.  Various other bearing surfaces have been used since.

Cindy,
A Dob in the 6" to 8" range is a good beginner scope.  They are cheaper and easy to break down and transport.  If you can find a telescope shop, buy it from them.  They are likely have good used scopes on sale as well at a reduced price.  They can even teach you how to align and use it.  An astronomy club may also help you.  My club has a "Beginners's corner" for teaching the newbies how to use them.  They can even get you to get that cheap scope to work, otherwise you might have to get another one if it is junk.
We have Open Houses with the various scopes and binoculars on the lawn owned by the members.  You can choose what type of scope from the variety of scopes being used.  We also have an Open House in January titled "How to use your telescope".  The public would come in and we do a free alignment and give advice on how to use it properly.  Keep away from the internet and the big box stores on these.

Well, I love, love , love Christmas.  Because

I work every day of year except Thanksgiving Easter and Christmas.  So it is a wonderful day off.  We always have friends and family over on Christmas eve.  I have more than my share of eggnog and other spirits.  I spend the whole day doing nothing and it's great.

I also love giving presents,  singing Christmas carols (out of key), watching Christmas movies ( fav is Scrooge played by Alister cook in black and white and miracle on 34th st also in black and white)  I don't know why they have to colorize old movies.  And lastly it is the only day of the year I want it to snow.

I'll probably get in trouble for this one but it makes me smile and I don't take offense from.
