I want and need to get a hysto, ASAP. I'm still 17 so im assuming I'd have to wait until after my next birthday, but I'd like to start planning. To guys who have had a hysto could you answer some questions for me?

1. How long was the recovery time? (everything i've read says ~3-6 weeks but i don't know if that means i can't do anything for that time)
2. Would it be feasible to have it on like a spring or winter break and then be able to go back to college by the time break is done?
3. How far in advance will it need to be planned?
4. How do i go about finding a surgeon? Are they basically all the same and i should just go off location and who my insurance would cover?

Mine's not till the 14th of this month so can't really answer all your questions but I wanted to make you aware of something for the future. With a hysto it is optional to have your cervix removed. I'm not sure if every surgeon would be upfront about it or not. If it is removed with everything else it means you never have to be examined down there again. If the cervix is to remain it would mean you'd still need regular physicals to screen out cervical cancer in the future.

1. My doctor is doing mine as an open surgery (because of complications) so she said it'll be 6 to 8 weeks before I'm back to normal. Laparoscopic surgery would have less recovery time.

2. I'd say get it done during the Summer to give yourself ample time to heal.

3. I'm thinking it is all relative to the surgeon but mine has been scheduled for around 3 months.

Definitely give yourself the longest recovery time you can manage, just in case.

mangoslayer,  I know your feelings wanting to get one ASAP.  Being 17 almost 18 your age is going to be a big problem in finding a GYN surgeon for a hyster.  I am 22 with no GYM problems that would even make a surgeon consider one for me, so I expect to have problems getting one.  If you do have a problem most dr will try many things before doing a hyster.  I don't have the money now if I could find a dr.  There are several procedure that surgeon use today, some of the new procedure have the patient up and active in a day or two.
