Back in the 1970s, the women's tennis world was rocked by the arrival of Renee Richards, who quickly became one of the better players on the tour.

The kicker was that Richards had started out life as Richard Raskind before having a sex-change operation. He had been a good amateur player but now that he was a she, the re-named Richards was good enough to make the women's pro tour.

Richards pro career did not last long as she was already well into her 40s by the time this all happened. She went on to have a very successful career as a tennis coach and adviser, counting Martina Navratilova as one of her clients.
