I'm in the younger, nerdy crowd here and I enjoy cosplaying quite a bit. I'd just like to know how you guys feel on that. Do you feel like you have to cosplay characters in the same gender that you identify with? Do you feel as if you are misgendered more/less in cosplay?

I find myself feeling as if I were to be misgendered more, but in fact there are so many non-binaries there that you find anyone and everyone using the restrooms and treading on eggshells as to what to call each other. Many of these folk are "internet people" who know all the terms and whatnot...in fact I feel very safe at conventions. I cosplay both men and women, though, because I like female and male characters, and I just think hey, if I want to cosplay a female I don't need to stuff a bra! And if I need to bind for a male, well, I do that already. :P

For those of you who don't cosplay, this can apply to Halloween too. So, how do you feel? :D

I'm 31 so while I do enjoy a balance of young/older things costume play isn't one of them. If the costumes are really good then I like looking at people wearing them but if they're mediocre I think it's pointless.

In other words, if you're going to do it do it right.

I am misgendered less, this was before I had a binder and with my long hair I dressed up as the Question. 90% of the time I was ID-ed as him :). It also helps that it was impossible to talk with the mask on XD.
Love has no gender.

I have always wanted to cosplay but I'm  too broke to and I don't have the skill to make my own but I have always wanted to.  I'm plan on cosplay once I get top surgery one day but even after that, the way I see it is I'm going to get funny looks regardless of misgendering because I don't look anything like the characters I want to cosplay as....not even close.  I will look like a hot mess but at least I will  have fun.

@Malachite

Cosplay is always just for fun. Who cares if you're good or bad, everyone has to start somewhere. My cosplays are nowhere near good yet but I will tell you, they were a lot worse when I first started. I'm chubby and black, so a lot of characters I cosplay, I look nothing like. Who cares! It's about having fun with your friends. :P I say, go for it if you want to, even before you get top surgery, no one will probably care about gender, especially at a con where so many people are trans* themselves.

A long time ago, I went to a star trek convention in a female yeomans costume, from the original series, complete with the thigh high boots, hair in a beehive. It was fun. I wore the costume one other time to a Halloween party and then I retired it :)

A few years ago at work, they had a dress up for work halloween party. That day I wore a princess dress to work, complete with a magic wand. The sad part was I was THE ONLY person who wore a costume to work. The good part is I won the costume contest, due to no opposition :)

I will admit though that about 10 or so years ago I bought a custom made Sailor Moon costume. I have only worn it once, but never to a real cosplay event. I ued to go to anime conventions (my favorite was ICON at SUNY in Stonybrook, NY) because I liked collecting sailor moon toys, and I have left the convention each time kicking myself for not wearing the costume. The only costume I still have is the sailor moon one.

I had a custom made Ranma Saotome costume. :D
I don't have time to cosplay or make a costume, but there are lots of characters I would love to do. But, someday I hope to have a Fursuit made of my fursona, Miri Tekker.

Ah we have another furry! I always wanted my fursona made, Nero but I haven't the money to get it commissioned or the time to do it myself (or, who am I kidding, the skill...)
