I am due to start back to school and I'm trying to get all my financial aid documents finished. The school showed that I did not register with the selective service, of course. I sent the form along with my birth certificate (showing female) to request a status letter showing that I was not eligible to register. I received a letter today stating that after reviewing my history, I SHOULD HAVE registered and I failed to do so and it is my responsibility to explain why I did not register to whatever intuition that I am requesting benefits. I don't understand why I got this back. I am 31 years old and I just started transitioning at 30. I changed my passport, drivers license and SS card all within the last few months. My birth certificate still clearly says female. I even served in the military before I was 21 before transitioning.  Has anyone else received a response like this?

Whoa that's weird. I thought you only had to register until age 26 and only if you're male. Course that was over 10 years ago when I last looked at it, maybe it changed. And I thought prior service made you exempt. I never registered after I got out of the service. Actually it looks like it's 25.

Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service.

Weird.  I submitted my documents and got the letter. I was in my 40s.

I wonder what they would do if you just registered, then. Or will they not let you?

Just wanted to put some "closure" on this topic. I called the selective service and they pulled my paperwork and determined it was an oversight during processing. So, they are mailing out the corrected status letter.

Good outcome.  A quick note, prior service does not make you exempt from Selective Service registration. Hugs, Devlyn

Good tip. I was over 25 when I got out, so that's probably why they didn't come after me.
