Aliens won't let us in to the galactic council, until we grow the hell up.

Ever wonder why alien races from other planets have not fully revealed themselves to us yet? Ever wonder why we are treated like zoo animals at this point?

1. We have weapons of mass destruction and have used them on each other
2. We have biochemical weapons and have used them on each other
3. We kill people daily with rocks, knives, guns and barehands.
4. We constantly argue over religion, property, government systems and borders.
5. We hate or dislike people based on race, creed, color and gender and sexuality.

I really think we need some kind of paradigm shift here, or we will never be part of the galactic council.

OK, I'll take the bait.

Maybe it's because there are no alien races out there. Or maybe because the alien life forms that have been able to develop in remote worlds are not intelligent. Or maybe the one or two other intelligent life forms that exist (assuming they do) can't figure out a way to bridge the gap of quadrillions and quintillions (literally) of miles out there.

There probably are on the order of 1012 galaxies. If they each, like ours, have 1011 stars that would mean there are on the order of 1023 stars in our universe. If each of them has 10 or so planets, we can expect our universe to hold 1024 planets.

But what is the chance that intelligent life would evolve on one of those? We don't know, having just a single case (ours) to study. Is it 1 in 1020? Then there would be thousands of intelligent species out there. Is it 1 in 1028? Then thousands of universes like ours would have to exist before even one intelligent species evolves.

What is the probability? 1020? 1028? Much higher? Much lower? We simply don't know, and anyone who does claim to know is just guessing.

Not sure how this fits in "transgender talk" but it's an interesting enough question to be worth answering.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

ag, Shawn was using satire to address the point that humans are  not evolved.  ::)

Eh, well I didn't know where else to put it , I suppose maybe in the general section, but that seemed for light hearted games and such.

I've read better to be honest.

If you think about it, if the reason we do these things is because we're not evolved, then we really are only just doing as nature intended, rather like the cat going for the pretty garden bird.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that aliens granting us access to the galactic council was anything but lighthearted!

This is funny,  because i've said the exact same thing to people i know.  All humans are basically the same,  and we keep hurting each other.  How would we react to a completely different civilization?  Sadly,  we would probably go to war with it :(.

Agfrommd: what about the Drake equation?

Of course I'm sane.  When trees start talking to me, I don't talk back.

This entire thread implies that the aliens are friendly. Greys are not friendly.

Enlightenment isn't for everybody, and I'm sure it's something most don't even have a desire for. Killing people, arguing over stuff, and accumulating power and wealth is very fun, after all, at least when you're the one who benefits. Some say it's capitalism's fault - after all, we could offer the whole world a decent quality of life if wealth and land were distributed equally. However, I think it's more likely to be just a part of the nature of man. Or the nature of intelligent life in general. Selfishness.

After all, why not be selfish? Why be selfless at all? There's hardly any reason to do something if you get nothing out of it, right?

Why should I lower my quality of life to improve someone else's quality of life? This is doubly true when "someone else" is someone "I" will probably never meet.

If aliens exist, they'd probably just take this planet by force, assuming they were capable of it.

If everyone was selfish to the core, and was never selfless , I don't want to even imagine.

Example: You have to be operated on and the Doctor calls in and says "Sorry, I just don't feel like it, today is my golf day with my buddies". No one else is qualified to perform the operation where you are....and then you die. Is that the world you want to live in?

I do selfless acts, because they make me feel good to see another human being thrive and survive.

" Chances are that, if aliens exist, they'd just take this planet by force assuming they were capable of it."

They are and they are not at the same time. Thing is, everyone always assumes that because they would be capable of reaching here they would be capable of destroying us entirely. If they want to take this planet they also know that there are resources and we will not go down without a fight. Also they know if we go down we will end up taking this planet with us. Nukes would fly, making most resources utterly worthless to them. We have a very strong military in terms of a Us vs them scenario. Likely we would all get our act together and fight them, humans are a very military centric species. It would be too much work for a too little to gain scenario.

Some are just not that friendly, just look at the Vogons for example. Bureaucratic pen pushers and just plain unfriendly.
Don't ask about their poetry.

Now if they were in charge of the 21/12/12 they would have made sure the earth ended for the new hyperspace bypass.
So long and thanks for all the fish

If a doctor acted like that, he would be let go pretty quickly, and probably wouldn't get a good reference from that hospital. This selfish act would affect his life profoundly. It is unwise to sacrifice your career for recreational time. Furthermore, he would lose face.

So, the example of doctors showing up to do their job isn't a great example of selflessness. Doctoring makes good money, and it's a good way to practice your interest in anatomy and physiology. Helping people is a part of it, but being a doctor isn't selfless because of that - it's a trade.

Well, I stated "assuming they were capable of it". I'm sure it wouldn't be incredibly easy to wipe us all out, but it's probably possible with sufficiently advanced weapons. For the sake of the argument, discussing how difficult it would be for an alien race to take this planet for their own should be left for another thread.

QuoteI have a better analogy for selfishness. Let's say Everyone is daffy duck , a mad hatter version of daffy duck "Mine Mine Mine! Down Down Down! Go Go Go!

People in utter chaos , desperately trying to build there own fortress of Gold, high above the clouds, always looking for ways to take from what someone else has. Children dying on the streets, people lying on the ground in ruins, no one anywhere wanting to help anyone.

Thanks, but I'll pass on a 100% complete selfish world.

IIRC they didn't even need the bypass because of improbability physics...  on the other hand, a babel fish might be fun to keep around.

Well, I think that if we all just got together and put aside the petty quarrels, we could be a much better species.

As for aliens, I'm not scared of their weapons. I'm scared that if they spread their alien germs that no one has immunity to, we could all die.  :o
