Lady Boy?

I really don't know what to think about this - the Boston Tea Party café is selling a thai chicken themed wrap called The Lady Boy.

This both amuses me and really pisses me off, for very different reasons.

What do you think?

Is the Boston Tea Party cafe known for making statements? Does it have a Palin fish cake?

It does seem rather questionable.

If it upset me personally I would just go elsewhere. Though I can't really see myself going to a cafe with a name like  Boston Tea Party café.

I think it's funny. They sure had a creative idea and good sense of humor on their menu item.

However, I never like the term 'ladyboy' It just sounds degrading and associates with porn industry.

i would never be the type that would make an issue if i saw it on a menu to the waiter/waitress.

However, the term "ladyboy" is kinda offensive. It's almost like the Eastern version of ->-bleeped-<-.

Am I wrong for thinking s**m*** is as bad as n*****?  I mean, n***** has a deep history in slavery that grossly distorts a sometimes-visible minority, but s**m*** is a porn word that takes the image of people heavily falling into economic/sexual slavery of said industry and imposes that picture to grossly distort an invisible minority, and there hasn't been a movement to "reclaim" the word (unlike n*****).

I don't think so.

But I wonder if we, as a community want to be going down the route of things not to mention?

That must have been awkward......"Excuse me, may I photograph your lady boy?"

I was queuing for the counter when I saw this in their self-service chill cabinet.

I expect whoever thought this up just thought it was cool, and had no idea some people find it offensive. I think I'm going to write to them to point this out, though.

I forgot you're in the UK.

A place in the UK with a name like The Boston Tea Party Cafe?

It is really not the sort of place I'd personally go to unless to use the free toilet.

Sorry Padma. Not meaning any disrespect. I just try to avoid pretension whenever I can.

You mean this: http://www.bostonteaparty.co.uk/what-we-do

So, Padma, what was inside the wrapper?
  •

Padma

I don't know what was inside the wrapper - chicken, thai-esque flavouring, peanut sauce I think.

The BTP in Exeter is my place to escape to for a cup of herb tea and some writing or reading, as it has this goddamn huge room upstairs with big windows, feels a bit like Hogwarts dining hall. Not really caring about the pretension or otherwise thereof, I just like the place and the staff and the tea, and the fact that they can cater for people who can't eat wheat.

Anyway, I've written them a polite note explaining why some people may find Lady Boy offensive as a term for lunch.

Padma.

I hope I haven't seemed disrespectful to you here. Personally I'd find any place that used titles like they do, especially those prices is not the type of place I'd frequent. But I'm a bit of a meat and two veg sort.

Humm...I wonder if it is a sausage wrap in some tortilla...know that would be clever and funny

I wouldn't pay four quid for a sarnie either, don't worry :). Their hot food is less poncy, and they do great gluten-free cakes. Sometimes it's what I need (I'm not sure why, but I feel safe there, and that's worth a lot).

I think they just called it Lady Boy because it was the first Thai thing they could think of. Pff...

We don't have restaurants here in Boston named Boston Tea Party, we actually throw the stuff in the harbour! Hugs, Devlyn

nope. You're not wrong at all. ->-bleeped-<- is a horrible term.

I once saw someone state in their OKcupid profile that she hopes she can become a ->-bleeped-<- one day. OMG....only the grace of God and the peace of Christ and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit refrained me cussing her out through a PM.

I was calm. Told her how horrible that term is and why.
