QuoteFurther evidence crabs and other crustaceans feel pain

Scientists have found further evidence that crustaceans feel pain.

A study has revealed that the shore crab, a close relative of the species we use for food, responds to electric shocks and then goes on to avoid them.

Previous research has shown that prawns and hermit crabs also react to painful situations.

You can tell a crab feels pain when you throw it into the boiling water and it tries to escape. It doesn't take a scientist to figure that out.

Plants do react to stimuli, that is one of the characteristics of all living things.

But how can you take that response as an indicator of feeling anything?

If you feel anything then you respond...Of course plants do not have a central nervous sytem and thus they cannot have a cognizant pain as superior animals do but plants are aware of their own physiological  collapse (as in dying) of  or the loss of a part...

So the strictly good budhist or 'tree hugger' should restrict their diets to just fruits...good luck with that one

Having said that, I am a an equal-oportunity sadist..I eat anything: cold or hot, alive or death, spices or bland, animal or plant, bacteria or fungal, organic or synthetic...

Some people are so goddamn stupid.

They used to say babies don't feel pain, either..."brain's not fully developed yet"...I watched them poke my kids in the heel for a blood test thing...omg the screams were horrible!

Why in hell wouldn't we think ALL animals feel pain?
...I think for most of us it is a futile effort to try and put this genie back in the bottle once she has tasted freedom...

So let's assume any animal with a nervous system has the ability to feel "pain" and/or have sensations concerning it's environment.  What's the point?

I've said it before, animals can escape. Sneaking up on some poor, defenseless plant that can't run away is just barbaric.

I guess this means you only eat the carnivorous plants then.

I'll attest to the notion that hermit crabs feel pain.  I own 14 of them and they're quite aware of their surroundings and they're more than aware when something hurts [you should hear the sounds they make if they get into a fight].

I also will not eat any animal that is boiled alive including crabs, shrimp, and lobster.  The idea of boiling something alive is horrendous to me.  I understand why as people say it causes a bitter taste to kill them before hand and that it can be bad for a person's digestive system, but I still find it a horrible thing.  It doesn't seem at all to respect the life of that animal to boil them; it's a cruel way to kill them.

On plants, I personally honor and give thanks to whatever comes across my plate be it plant or animal.  They gave up their lives so I could eat and survive, even if they put up a fight doing so.  It is the whole "circle of life" thing as creatures do need to eat to survive and live, but that doesn't mean respect shouldn't be given and that animal shouldn't be killed in a respectful manner.  But it's my own personal beliefs on the matter of giving thanks.

I pretty much agree.  I love crabs.  They have such ridiculous and cute personalities.  I kind of am horrified by the idea of them getting boiled alive.

Definitely!  I've got one guy that gets upset if there's no human present in the room and then I have a girl whose trust I've finally won.  It took forever considering I had to take special care of her because one guy grabbed a hold of her while she was molting and promptly ripped off all of the legs on one side of her body.  I had to baby her so much to keep her from dying.  It was miserable to watch, but she lived! :D  She's now the only crab in the tank that looks like an orange strawberry. XD

Awe!  That's so cute!  Except for the one that got assaulted, but I love you for taking care of her :)
