So I have had a great day here at work and it was just ruined. Our Internet manager just played out-loud a phone call I took this morning just to hear it. (This is what she does for all calls not just mine I must add). As soon as she played it I cringed I hate my voice on the phone it sounds almost like the old me almost to the T. Which makes me wonder is it the same voice I'm using everyday? Does it sound just as horrendous in person. I now feel embarrassed :-\ and like complete dog doo all over a measly 15 second phone transfer to parts.

I'm always freaking out about my voice one way or another because I just can't judge my own self where it's concerned for some reason.  So, when I decide it sounds bad, or even something I said sounds bad, then it does ruin my day.  I can definitely relate.

Well, I disdain my voice. If it were at least a decent singing voice, i could say, "Well, on the bright side, I can sing." However, I don't even have that.

Yuck.

By the way, Serena, your new avatar picture is so awesome!  :)

As someone with a lisp who doesn't notice it when I'm actually speaking, hearing my voice played back to me can be quite discomforting, not too mention I'm pre anything and so sound like a man.

I'm told that my voice passes very well, and I get called ma'am on the phone all the time. However, if I hear my voice I just hear the old male me talking. It's horrible. Personally, I think it's all in my mind. But, it's still there.

Serena, Don't be too hard on yourself. I'm sure your voice is much better than you think it is.

A recorded phone call is no indication of how your voice really sounds..

Technical points: A recorded phone call contains (typically) a fair bit of distortion and is generally low in fidelity. If it's a digital recording, it may also be using a very lo-fi sampling rate that will make everything sound bad, and not necessarily resemble what people hear when they hear your voice, live and in person. If you can get an example of the file, in fact, you might want to share the specs (sampling rate in Hz,  bit rate, any other details that may appear as part of the file specifications).

If you don't do good quality recordings of your voice from time to time, and are still working to improve your voice, you might want to make a habit of recording and listening, in part to desensitize yourself, and also as a means of improving the feedback and improvement that will come from closely listening to how you present yourself.

Long ago, I worked as a radio news announcer (in boy mode).  I hated listening to my recordings, only in part because of my dysphoria... a big part of it was also the dissonance of listening to a recording of myself, versus the sound I was more accustomed to, affected by all the factors that make listening to yourself (in your head, not in replay of a recording) so very different from what anyone else will hear.
