RUSSIA MOVES TO ENACT ANTI-GAY LAW NATIONWIDE

MOSCOW (AP) -- Kissing his boyfriend during a protest in front of Russia's parliament earned Pavel Samburov 30 hours of detention and the equivalent of a $16 fine on a charge of "hooliganism." But if a bill that comes up for a first vote later this month becomes law, such a public kiss could be defined as illegal "homosexual propaganda" and bring a fine of up to $16,000.

The legislation being pushed by the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church would make it illegal nationwide to provide minors with information that is defined as "propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexuality and ->-bleeped-<-." It includes a ban on holding public events that promote gay rights. St. Petersburg and a number of other Russian cities already have similar laws on their books.

The bill is part of an effort to promote traditional Russian values as opposed to Western liberalism, which the Kremlin and church see as corrupting Russian youth and by extension contributing to a wave of protest against President Vladimir Putin's rule.
"For transpeople, using the right pronoun is NOT simply a 'political correctness' issue. It's core to the entire struggle transpeople go through. Using the wrong pronoun means 'I don't recognize you as who you are.' It means 'I think you're confused, delusional, or mentally I'll.'. It means 'you're not important enough for me to acknowledge your struggle.'"

Geesh, i like how they like to throw in the sodomy (rape) in there along with the rest, as if that is even the same thing.

Sodomy doesn't mean rape, it's just any sex that isn't "penis inside vagina".

Yes it can mean rape, the word homosexuality was not added into the bible until the late 1800s

sodomy "can" refer to rape, because the sodomites wanted to rape the angels, they were not interesting in having a loving relationship with them.

legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/sodomy

Anal or oral intercourse between human beings, or any sexual relations between a human being and an animal, the act of which may be punishable as a criminal offense.

The word sodomy acquired different meanings over time. Under the Common Law, sodomy consisted of anal intercourse. Traditionally courts and statutes referred to it as a "crime against nature" or as copulation "against the order of nature." In the United States, the term eventually encompassed oral sex as well as anal sex. The crime of sodomy was classified as a felony.

Because homosexual activity involves anal and oral sex, gay men were the primary target of sodomy laws. Culturally and historically, homosexual activity was seen as unnatural or perverse. The term sodomy refers to the homosexual activities of men in the story of the city of Sodom in the Bible. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their residents' immorality became a central part of Western attitudes toward forms of non-procreative sexual activity and same-sex relations.

Beginning with Illinois in 1961, state legislatures reexamined their sodomy statutes. Twenty-seven states repealed these laws, usually as a part of a general revision of the criminal code and with the recognition that heterosexuals engage in oral and anal sex. In addition, state courts in 10 states applied state constitutional provisions to invalidate sodomy laws. As of early 2003, eight states had laws that barred heterosexual and homosexual sodomy. Three other states barred sodomy between homosexuals.

Nameless here for evermore!;  Merely this, and nothing more;
Tis the wind and nothing more!;  Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore!!"

Yes I have seen that definition, I agree with that one, but it has been used as a negative term as well.

Thomas Jefferson, in his revised criminal code for Virginia, classified sodomy with rape, as a felony to be punished by castration. In fact, Jefferson moderated the punishment for sodomy which, under the common law, had been capital. Sodomy had been condemned as a grave moral offense, both in the Old and New Testaments. It had been condemned by reason no less than by revelation, by the Laws of Plato no less than by the Laws of Moses.

Seems like they should worry a little more about alcoholism than consensual sex acts. I guess the politicians have to find other villains than themselves to point at...

Its a sad state that nationalism, the same disease that left their country in ruin some 70 years ago, now plagues their youth in large numbers. They idolize men and ideas that saw their own grandparents as subhuman and waged one of the largest conflicts in history against them.

Religious nationalism is the new brand of fascism, the new second wave of hatred our generation must conquer.

All a load of crap.

Sodomy is not rape, its non vaginal sex and its used in conjunction with condemning homosexuality. Any link to rape is fabricated to persecute homosexuals by religious bigots

-Czars establishing tyrannical rule on their own people.
-Took over countries and made them into satellite states.
-Burned your own cities to the ground when Hitler invaded.
-Allowed for a huge chunk of the Ukranian population to starve to death simply for not obeying your rule.
-Vladimir Putin being allowed to illegally usurp power, despite not being voted into office. After this, the Russian govt. still has the nerve to call itself democratic.

It seems to me that after taking all of this into consideration, Russia's traditional values should be avoided at all costs.

This article reminds me, I've read that Russia is hella racist. Black Nigerians and Arabs are frequently subject to hate crimes and the government does hardly anything about it.

All due to a rise of ultra-nationalism, especially in Russia's youth.

It's a sad thing what is happening across our border in east :( This is not the only thing, that's terribly wrong there. One can only hope for a better future for the nation, a future that should have started in 1991.

Not going to go into details, but anyone who has studied Russian history, culture and literature understand why the people and the nation acts like they do. Not to say that each and everyone, but the group that is the loudest.
