I think I know someone who is willing to pass on her experience, but I will not just walk into the guys only area and post. That would be rude.

I'm curious about how much special treatment I might have gotten as a female in the labs, having come in the "side door" as my boss put it and being in science without doing high school.

I need to word this better but my roommate just walked in and is, uh, well he's there.

I notice that at school and everywhere that I've ever worked, the guys are a lot more vocal, which I tend to have a problem with. I am usually very quite, just like all the girls; at school I rarely ever raise my hand, even if I know the answer. Most of my classes have between 50 and 90 people in them, and usually there's only one or two girls who actually raise their hands on a regular basis where there's usually at least 6-9 guys who regularly raise their hands. Where I work now, it's a little different because there's only a few employees, but at places where there was a larger number of staff, or in my jobs that were staffed by extremely manly men, the guys seem to be able to fool around more then the girls. I think I am still in girl mode when it comes to a lot of social situations just because of the way I've been socialized, though I am trying to be more vocal.

I'm curious. In my military time there was a pretty distinct dichotomy between the sexes, in terms of who could behave a certain way and get away with certain things. Wondering if this will add a new perspective to that...
