Has anyone ever had problems with getting the F or M on their birth certificate in Florida having surgery like in Thailand? The DNC said they won't change it because my doctor does not have a DEA number. I tried to explain to them that they dont have those in Thailand. Also the birth certificate place said they have to mail everything off to Tallahassee to see if my paper work checks out? Whatever that means and it could take two months. Is this normal.

Division of driver licenses are probably committing some details, like the statement has to be done by a locally licensed physician, not just the one who performed the surgery.
QuoteCustomers' requesting a gender different from what appears on the driver license or
identification card (unless the gender currently indicated was entered in error) must provide a
signed original statement on office letterhead from an attending medical physician (internist,
endocrinologist, gynecologist, urologist or psychiatrist).
This medical certification must include the following items:
1.  Physician's full name;
2.  Medical license or certificate number;
3.  Issuing state or other jurisdiction of medical license/certificate;
4.  Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number assigned to the physician;
5.  Address and telephone number of the physician;
6.  Language stating that he/she is the attending physician for the customer and that
he/she has a doctor/patient relationship with the customer;
7.  Language stating the customer has had appropriate clinical treatment for gender
transition to the new gender (male or female); and
8.  Language stating, "I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States
the forgoing is true and correct."
Thanks to Real ID, SSA records should also be changed to make other things easier when it comes to verification of identity that DDL does.

I know this topic is several months old, but I have info that will help as far as a Florida drivers license is concerned. You can get the gender marker on that changed with simply a letter from your endo/hormone prescribing doctor that says you have completed or are in the process of a gender transition. You want the wording to be precise on this letter just in case your DMV representative decides to be a hard ass about the rules.

The FL DMV follows the same rules as the US State Department, so you can follow the letter guidelines here:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_5100.html

I know this works because I am pre-op, but I changed the gender marker on my license when I changed my name (May 2012). As for the birth certificate, I don't know about the gender marker, but as far as the name change, you just need to mail a copy of your name change judgement, pay a fee, and fill out a former. The downside is that they put a notice on the bottom of the birth certificate that it was amended. Literally: on X date, name was changed from MALE NAME to FEMALE NAME. I don't know if they will do the same for gender, but I think that's completely screwed up. Your birth certificate basically outs you to anyone who sees it.

A ray of hope though: I read another thread on here a year or two ago where someone changed their name and gender on a Florida birth certificate, and it had no mention of the amendment. Maybe it was because she went through a law firm, and they specifically requested that not be added.

I'm glad it all worked out. I'm curious: does your new birth certificate have any mention of the amendments performed on it (i.e. gender was changed m -> f, name was changed from m -> f)? And where did you go to have that changed? After my legal name change, the Office of Vital Statistics just sent me the new birth certificate and a bill (I think they received the new info from SSA).
