Dr. Jim Sears from CBS's The Doctors apologizes for Coy Mathis comments
Friday, March 1, 2013 - 11:50am by Aaron McQuade, Director of News and Field Media at GLAAD

Dr. Jim Sears ('Dr. Jim' on CBS's The Doctors) has apologized for comments he made while part of a panel on CNN Tuesday, discussing the story of six-year-old Coy Mathis - the Colorado first-grader whose family has filed a Civil Rights complaint to force her school to let her use the correct bathroom.

In the segment, Sears argued that parents should be concerned if Coy, who is transgender, is allowed to use the girls' room.

[...]

We received several incident reports about the segment and reached out to Sears, who apologized for his comments and said he was drawing on the wrong experience.

"I made my comments based on the fact that I would be uncomfortable if there was a boy, who acted like a typical boy, in the girls' bathroom with my daughter. I understand Coy as transgender is not likely to display those same tendencies. I do not know Coy or her family personally, but I do apologize for implying she may display the same behavior as I have seen with young boys her age. Coy has shown a tremendous amount of maturity and courage for her young age and I wish her and her family all the best."

It is so nice to hear this news! Dr. Sears did the right thing.

He probably read our very heated discussion of the subject here, lol.  :D

Better late than never. But for a health professional, supposedly specialising in pediatrics, to make such a suggestion about boys in general is appalling and worrying.

It is neither normal nor natural for a child to casually expose their genitals.

I am also rather concerned at the seemingly off nad manner in which this retraction was made.

He made a dangerous and utterly insulting remark, backed by his professional status, about a specific child, who he has not examined but is dealing with a specific condition. Based upon second hand information and his own bigotry.

This is both disgusting and utterly wrong.

He said what he said because he is an ignorant guy blinded by his own religious prejudices. In addition to apologizing to Coy, he should have extended his apology to every boy in America.

This guy sorely needs some continued medical education updates

More important his apology was probably driven by financial considerations over his media business rather than any other moral considerations or contemplations

Shoot... I don't think that anyone believes for a moment that there is an ounce of sincerity in his apology... but it serves to shorten his leash some - and that ain't bad.
I ain't scared... I just don't want to mess up my hair.

You are right ^^^ but there are people who even when things are 'spelled out" still chose to believe what ever is not so just because they are ....

Wow! Glad we are a forgiving group of people.I and here I was expecting pitch forks, torches and a crusifiction. -_-

Are we going to save the burning of his corpse for the next time he screws up or do you want to get it over now so he doesnt have a chance to learn from his mistakes?

A corpse implies a killing... and that takes all the fun out of it...  ;)

Exactly.

He can take his "apology" and shove it where the sun don't shine.

Over reacting is never of any use to anyone.

Sears likely will still be the person he was before the TV spot, and likely is not about to change.

But our reaction is not really ideal either.

I am not the penis between my legs.

But even if I was a male in mind as well as form, it's still just a damned penis.

Most of the reason we have trouble with sex organs, is we make to much fuss over dogma that supports making a fuss over sex organs.

It's just a penis. When used during sex, they tend to ejaculate sperm. It's what they were meant to do.

But over reacting to the penis of a 5 year old, that's the reaction of an idiot.

I would be concerned if my 5 year old daughter was alone with a drunken male in his 30s walking around with his pants half off and an erection.

It's 2013, when do we get society to start accepting truths that are truths and when do we get to get rid of all the mythology dogma and crazy beliefs?
Well being TG is no treat, but becoming separated has sure caused me more trouble that being TG ever will be. So if I post, consider it me trying to distract myself from being lonely, not my needing to discuss being TG. I don't want to be separated a lot more than not wanting to be male looking.

Never saw a tiger change his stripes so far.

That s because he is no tiger..he is one of those lizards that change color according to the prevailing wind...akin to the senators and other politicians

Good point, I stand corrected!  :)

Reading some of the comments, I can't help but wonder how you treat someone who accidentally used the wrong pronoun?

This doctor apologized. He obviously didn't think about whom would be affected before he spoke and now he knows that it hurt a great many people. Part of the problem is that as soon as we can, so many of us go stealth. So we are not someone that is as visible and mainstream as someone from the Gay or Lesbian communities. We also don't have the numbers like the gay and lesbian community. We can be invisible, but then, what role models will children like Coy have to look up to? If we want these children to have role models, that means being out and visible. That also means standing up for ourselves when we see an injustice, but also being able to forgive and educate. Otherwise we are nothing more than the bitter demons the media and religious nut jobs keep trying to paint us as. Should the offender apologize and then turn right back and make the same kinds of comments, then you know it's deliberate. Until then, how about we actually consider giving peace a chance?
