I actually am waiting due to ALL the stuff that needs to be changed. If I wait til May or June, I'll have more time. I have a house, home owner's insurance, and all sorts of stuff you kids won't need yet. Should be fun. :)

Essentially this is what I changed (I'm sure I'm missing some)

- Birth certificate
- Driver license (gender and name)
- Passport (gender and name)
- SIN (name only, linked to birth certificate)
- Health Care Card (Name, has no gender)
- Old College (name change)
- New University (name change)
- Banks (I'm at two different banks, name change at both)
- Insurance Companies (Horse insurance, car insurance, health insurance)
- New Student id (I transitioned while at my old college so needed a new card)
- Inform Doctor and Dentist (new name, present new health care card)

That's all I can remember off the top of my head, sure I missed a couple... When you take into consideration wait times on getting some documents the time really adds up, though I wasn't really doing it actively, just doing things as I remember them, so It took longer than it needed too, but I struggled a lot over my birth certificate so that took up a couple months and it took my health care card a month to get here because it was lost in the mail.

Don't forget alumni associations!  Even though I changed my name on my college transcripts and had new diplomas printed, I went online and found the alumni associations had the wrong name and info.  In my case it was fairly easy to change.

I got a lawyer (a fellow transman) when I went through mine just because I was also seeking a gender marker change.  He said that there was no way at all that the name change would be rejected.  The only thing he was iffy on was the gender change, but that went through without question.  Once we were in front of the judge the whole thing took less than 10 minutes.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Guys really don't panic about your name, people call their kids stupid names all the time now, so unless you're changing it to something completely stupid like "philosoraptor smith" you'll be fine

Now that you mention it... ;)

No but really I know guys who have changed their names in the conservative parts of the South and they were okay. I wouldn't worry too much.
