So I'm not on HRT but I'm trying to get a head start on hair growth. But as I grow hair out its kind of a mullet kind of thing... Its kind of odd. I just kinda let it do its own thing but I feel like I'm missing something. So any tips on growing out your hair pre HRT let me know <3

Sorry if this sounds silly, go to a hairdresser, one for woman, tell them and ask for advice.

I did and they have been wonderful, lots of advice, styled, coloured, cared for and loved by them.

They have even told me that if I'm going out for a date or something special to call and they will give my a quick blow dry and style to make me extra special.

Ye takes a bit of courage to walk in, I had short grey hair and was in guy clothes, told them I was a trans* woman and needed help with my hair.

Cindy is spot on. I used to go to a low cost barber and then went to a salon that does hair for women. I am growing mine out like you, and the stylist I am working with has helped shape and cut it in a very andro-femme manner.

Bring some pics to the salon with you to show the stylist.

Sounds to me like your in the awkward stage of growing your hair out. When you start to get some length, the boy cut you once had turns into a "mullet type thing". In my opinion it stays that way for longer than you would think. All I did was, go into a barber shop and tell them to trim the back but leave all the length you can everywhere else. Presto, back to managle hair. It will be more on the male spectrum but it won't look so "mullety". After I was able to get my hair into a little pony tail, thats when I went to an actual hair dressor. For me, I had them add layers to my hair to make it easier to style and to make it look more full.
The other thing for growing out your hair is suppliments. For me I would personally recommend getting some Bioten  suppliments. I get mine from Trader Joes or Walmart. In my experience they make your hair grow a little faster and stronger with less breakage. When I started hrt I also had them put me in Finesteride. Which blocks the DHT absorbtion that causes male pattern baldness. But, there is a "shedding" period with Finesteride that when your trying to grow your hair out is almost unbarable. But 3-6 months after that my hair started becoming thicker. Now when I pull my hair back I can see almost like a mini "afro" of new hair. And when I pull my hair back it feels like its getting thicker.
   Hope that helps a little.

I always stayed away from barbers...they seem to know two hairstyles: short, and shorter.

Spend a few extra dollars, go to a walk-in salon (like HairMasters). For $18 they'll do you right, and they have entire books on styles, etc. The stylist will help you with showing you what should look good on you...and generally will accept whatever you decide.
...I think for most of us it is a futile effort to try and put this genie back in the bottle once she has tasted freedom...

I know a lot of stylists and you must remember they make their living off YOU. So, most of them, if they care about survival, will be super nice to you and make you look your best so you come back. It's Economics 101, baby...Life, it's a team sport lol but everything is easier said then done and if you're not used to it, it will be uncomfortable at first.

One thing that I learned was that even though we are growing our hair out, it is important to go to the salon to get our dead ends trimmed.

My biggest problem now is breakage. Getting the dead ends trimmed helps with that as does a good protein enriched shampoo and not using gel or mousse that contains alcohol.

I haven't had mine cut since January of last year, it sure had its awkward stages for sure! But now it's finally starting to look like normal longer hair.
I want it to grow out another couple of inches before I get the frizzy ends cut off nicely.

We have a nice hip salon here in town that I will go to....no more barbers for this girl, lol

I just took this now as I'm reading this thread,

Yup your in the awkward phase of hair growth. Just like the other girls said, I used to just go into a barbershop and have them only cut the back until it all evened out. I asked for round instead of squared off it looked kind of little boyish but thats better than mullet or manly. Once it was long enough to style it (emo style or justin bieber style) a bit I started going to a salon. I didnt tell my stylist I was trans till recently, up until  I told her, I just would tell her I was growing it out and asked for a femme cut. Growing your hair takes forever!
Don't judge a book by its cover! My lifes been like a country song! True love, amazing grace, severe heartbreak, buckles, boots n spurs! I 've been thrown off the bull a couple times, I keep getting up and dusting myself off! Can't give up on my happily ever after!
