"Stereotyped as dancers, beggars and prostitutes, Pakistan's vibrant but shunned transgender community is striking out into politics with individuals contesting elections for the first time. They may only be seven out of 23,000 candidates with little chance of getting elected, but they have livened up an otherwise lacklustre campaign and set an important marker for their rights in the conservative Muslim country."

Transgender candidate Sanam Faqeer discusses her political aspirations and how went from being teased for being a girlish boy to a prostitute to opening up her own business and charity to benefit other transwomen in Pakistan.

[Video] Transgender candidate breaks Pakistan mould

Reporter Imran Kahn interviews MTF candidate Mazhar Anjun. Prior to 2011, transgender people were not allowed to run in elections.

---------------

The reporter refers to Anjun as "he" and "transgender man". The report says Anjun has no preference to being called "he" or "she", but it seems like something Al-J should work on in future reports.

I found another article that discusses two other candidates, Bindiya Rana and Resham:

Transgender candidates running in Pakistan elections

"When Bindiya Rana, a transgender candidate in Pakistan's elections, went door to door in the Karachi slum she hopes to represent, few people seemed to care about which gender she identifies with. They were more interested in what she was going to do to combat the street crime and electricity outages in their neighborhood if elected." Rana is active in her community and works at an organization that helps transgender people, street children, and works on social issues.

"Resham also said voters in her area encouraged her to contest the elections after becoming fed up with all the political parties. That's a common complaint in Pakistan where many voters rail at the corruption that they feel permeates the political system.
'All political parties have disappointed people. Now they want a change, and I am the best choice for them as my past record is clean and flawless,' she said."

Rana and Resham are not worried about their security, both have limited funds are are relying on door-to-door campaigning. Rana said no doors were slammed in her face, she's been greated with smiles, and residents have said that since Rana is poor like them, she is more likely to understand their needs than the other politicians.
