So I'm basically stuck at a job I hate, I work as a life guard at an indoor pool and the catch is I do absolutely nothing for 4-6 hours every shift. I can't stand it and I'm stuck there for the time being. Every job I actually want I can't get since I don't have any experience and I can't get a job elsewhere because the hours I have are just too convenient for me. Also I only work ten hours a week which is both a blessing, in that most of the time I'm not stuck there, and a curse, in that I don't get much money. I just wish I had a better job, this one is just sucking my soul out and I dread going there....

I know what that's like. 

It's never too late to look for something else.  While the economy sucks and it's in fact tough out there, you can always find something else.  That's what I am doing at the moment.  If you feel that you don't have the experience, it is never too late to start an internship or do some volunteer work.   Doing so can build up your resume and create some new connections for you.  This might be a possibility for you because you are working part time at the moment.  Also, even if you don't have the experience in the same field you are searching in, there are ways to utilize your current skills and match them with the job you are hunting for. I will say, that you might want to consider working full time and shifting your schedule around.  One, you will have more money for everything you need.  Two, jobs don't work around your schedule, you work around their's. I think that's something to take into consideration. 

But, I can understand that you don't want to change too much for a job.  My last job offer I had turned down because it required me to work the hours of 2 full time jobs, and then some.  I've worked crazy hours before and can tell you how difficult it can be.  So, don't take something like that,lol.

Are you over twenty-one? If so driving a truck may be up your alley. You spend most of your time alone, get to see the country, never a boring moment because traffic won't let that happen. Not to mention you sit up high so you can pretty much wear what you want to wear. Just pull over and change before going through any weigh stations though. You can wear flipflops and polish on your toenails, short shorts, halter tops and so on. There is in no way any type of dress code. Not to mention that CDL drivers are a rare comodity and you never have to search for a job. You can quit one job today and then be in orientation for another job the next day. LBGT, black, white, brown, red or even green, trucking companies don't really care as long as you can drive the truck safely without killing anyone. You won't get rich from it by a long shot but you will have a certain amount of freedom.

I was thinking of doing some volunteer work over the summer but no matter what I need some source of income. I want to get into social work as a career and looking to gain experience for when I apply to my schools program. I need to do something that keeps me busy that just isn't monotonous labor. I was t to go out and help people.

Well, you can volunteer to be a counselor's assistant.  I know crisis centers are  usually in need of people to volunteer their time and even offer training.  That could be place to learn.  And it's not like you need to do it full time.   You could work a job while doing volunteer work on the side.  In the meantime, I am sure you could find something that pays that you'd enjoy. 

I'm having my therapist  giving me places that I could apply to. I guess there are jobs and its just I haven't been looking hard enough for them. I'm definitely done with my job once I get a new one.

Julia, that is a very noble ambition.  Have you looked at what sort of academic training you would need?

I'm actually planning on going to my schools social work program next year in the spring hopefully, been having a bit of problem at school doue to personal problems so it may be up in the air. The thing is while I'm potentially off from school next semester I want to get a head start to gain some experience and work full time until i get back into the swing of things.
