Surgery and lingering pain?

Just a random thought that came into my head.  Do any of you ever get pain from your top surgery along time after it's healed?

I had really, really minor surgery on my hand (the whole operation took 9 minutes) 3 years ago, but today out of the blue it's hurting again.  Of course, that surgery involved tendons, and it could be to do with the fact that I broke the bone beneath the tendon they were sorting out a year before that instead of the actual surgery.

It's just making me wonder whether this is something which rears its head occasionally with all surgeries, because I'd like to just forget about the whole trans thing by the time I'm in my thirties or something, aside from injections etc.

(And no, I'm not concerned enough to see a doctor.  It's just one of those things and will be gone by the morning.)

Probably something to do with the tendons is my best guess.

My list of surgeries thus far is:

One brain/spinal cord (hemangioblastoma)
Two partial kidney (nephrectomies)
One stent removal
Right side ovary removed (oophorectomy)
Complete hysto with cervix removed

No lingering effects from anything except nerve damage from where they worked on my spinal cord. My right hand up to my wrist always feels like it is asleep (pins and needles). It's annoying but never painful.

Do know that if anyone on here ever has surgical fears or questions about how things are done I'm only a message away.

I broke two fingers and I still get pain from them. I'd say the break or the damage to tendons is the cause.

You know I'd expect to feel a lingering pain every now and then after the surgery. My opinion stems from my own experiences. 9 months ago I stepped on a shard from a broken cup and sliced through the first knuckle (underside) on my big toe. I never went for stitches, cause that's what super glues for, and just let it heal up. It took a good month to close completely, but it is healed now.

However, sometimes when I'm doing push-ups or walking barefoot on carpet, I'll sometimes get a pang of pain where the cut was. This is however the first injury i've had that I get these bursts every now and then from. I think it might have had to do with a) how deep it was b) I didn't stitch it, I really should have as it was an inch long and about half an inch deep (traumatic for a toe!) c) it's in a spot that gets a lot of strain on a daily basis anyways and c) I think I got a mild infection at one point during the healing process.

However none of my other old scars hurt so I think reoccurring pain has to do with, whether you got an infection during the healing process, how well it healed and how traumatic the injury was (ie: did it go through muscle/tissue/ligaments/bone/etc or was it just a shallow cut).

However I also expect it's very personal to the person and how sensitive you are in that area to begin with. I have 'issues' with my feet, getting a cut on my foot freaked me out because it's all just bone, muscle and ligaments. Had I gotten the same cut ANYWHERE else on my body I wouldn't have cared all that much. But bleeding profusely from my foot and knowing how deep the cut was still gives me the heeby jeeby's.

So to sum up, It's probably has a lot to do with your body and how the healing process is for you. I don't think anyone could say definitively 'yes' or 'no'.

Keloid scars can be painful.

Had a fairly ugly scar on my neck, and it hurt and itched all the time.
I ended up having it cut out and stitched back up for a new scar to form.
Luckily this one didn't go bad.

So yeah, that's something that I'm very worried about.
Your body heals however it wants to heal though, can't control that.

Yes, I think the type of scar also affects how it feel after healing. I've got 3 keloid scars; one from an eyebrow piercing, one from a bridge piercing (that bitch was the worst piercer ever), and one on my forearm. The piercing ones definitely itch every now and again, but because they're so small, it's not that bad (although my eyebrow one killed whatever produces melanin in my eyebrows, so they now grow in white in that area rather than black).

But the one on my forearm is rather big for what it is, and sometimes it hurts (kind of a throbbing, dense pain), and other times it itches like crazy and people probably think I have a drug problem. =__=

I also had a cyst drained from the base of my spine (twice, actually), and that still itches and hurts a good bit of the time. But that could also be because they didn't drain it completely and it's still lingering there (my hospital is maybe one step up from Johns Hopkins Bayview center). So I'm not gonna blame that one on my butt crack scar. I guess if it shows up again, that'll be my answer.

In your case it's the broken bone. I've had plenty broken bones including my hands and it can hurt every now an again, especially in winter but it can happen randomly too (my ribs hurt randomly and I've cracked them before). Surgical scars never really hurt afterwards. Other scars can lead to issues but surgical scars tend to heal well. The area can be more sensitive afterwards or itchy but it doesn't just randomly hurt, you have to stress it to hurt, but it's usually more or a short twinge than a lingering pain. I had my ear half cut off for inner ear surgery and I used to wear glasses and still wear tight glasses/sunglasses (for cycling) and it's never a big deal. At times I notice it's there just with feeling of putting on the glasses but otherwise it barely effects me and it's in a constantly abused place. The worst chest scars get is a tee and workouts that you don't start until healed anyway. I have scars on my lower back and rarely feel anything when I stretch other than, at best, feeling that it's there and no more. So I wouldn't worry too much about lingering pain at all.

Thanks for the replies guys.  I thought it would probably be something to do with the break, but everyone always laughed at me when I said that I could feel my hand wasn't right because it's not a serious break.  It might be that it's one of the least painful bones in your body to break, but it's still a break.  And everyone's only mentioned old injuries twinging during the winter months, and not when it's getting warmer again.  It's good to know not everything goes like this though.

I think it all just depends on the person but some breaks can actually be okay and others cause twinges.  You use you hands all the time (writing, using phone, typing, putting them in/out pockets, opening doors, etc) so there's a constant stress on them.  For most of my old breaks I don't notice much unless it is cold, but I do often feel occasional twinges in my hands and ribs and that kinda makes sense because I'm a digital artist and sitting for long periods of time puts pressure on my ribs, I have to try and remember to switch sides if I find myself leaning one way.  It gets better over time but might not go away entirely.
