Hello, I'm just looking for some advice on how to get a name and gender change on all legal forums, credit cards, ect. I've looked up tons of info on Google and I'm just getting mixed answers also its just furthering my confusion -_-. I've called a LGBTQ friendly attorney and it just kind of confused me a bit more. He told me the name change is around 1500? That sounds like its a little too pricey or is that just about right and if so is there a cheaper way, I'm not a very wealthy person =/. They said their not really familiar with gender change though; they've done very few cases and wasn't to sure how much that cost. My other questions are would Legal Zoom help make it easier and cheaper, do I need an attorney, and what do I do at the court. Also I'm 21 and live here in Nevada if that helps =P. Thanks ^_^

Since name/gender marker change is a civil issue you don't need a lawyer most of the time.

The technicality of the filing depends on state to state but in general you submit the petition  to create a docket and case#. Some states want legal notice posted in dead tree publication before they will schedule a date for name change. For gender change via the court the SOP is to include evidence with the petition that the court accepts as evidence to create an order to change the record (in line with statues or case law).

I know the California courthouses sell a Name Change packet, I think I paid $10 for the packet.  It contains all the forms and explanations.

Its the filing charges and publishing charges that break you here ($350 to file; $60-100 to post in paper; $5 or 10 per certified copy and they recommend at least 10 copies).
