I just received a letter from Selective Service saying that I need to register. Should I register for the draft now or wait until I've had my gender legally changed? I know that even if a draft did occur (which seems more and more likely every day), I wouldn't be eligible to serve, but I need to register because of my federal student loans.

There is apparently an exemption from registering that you can apply for. Not sure where to find it though.

I think I'd be better off changing my legal gender and registering anyway. It's changed on my driver's license, but I need to change it with Vital Records and Social Security. If I get called up for the draft, I'll just walk in there with a feather boa, swishing and lisping. That'll have me out of there in no time.

Here is my understanding from reading up on it.  I am MTF and when I complete SRS, I will still have to keep registered for the draft.  The current military looks at your original birth gender.  So if you were originally born male, then you will have to keep registered, but you will be excused if they ever called you up, since you would have gone through SRS.  Now if you were a female, it is my understanding you are still exempt due to your original gender.  This is one reason I will keep my original birth certificate and social security card in a safety deposit box, you never know what you might have to prove in the future.

Now currently I don't see there being a draft.  The current DoD leadership does not want one, they know they would not get quality soliders like they need through a draft.  We learned this in Vietnam.

A draft right now would be political suicide. Not only would the military types ask the government why they're trying to flood our army with people who have no clue or want to be soldiers (basically a bunch of battlefield liabilities) and everyone else is going to make sure not to vote for those people ever again in their natural lives.

Well, draft or no draft, I just got my letter from Dr. Fischer saying that I've had surgery, so I guess I'm going to go down and get an amended birth certificate, THEN go to Social Security and change my gender with them (name's already done), THEN register for the draft. And THEN flash it around to my buddies who know I'm trans. "Looky me, I'm elegible to lose limbs and suffer brain damage!" Woohoo!
