i would without a doubt rather be terrified. terror is fear, and fear is simply fear...you can get over it. horror is a strong reaction to something terrible...something that could scar you for life. i'd much rather have the chance to forget a terror than relive a horror in my dreams.

I'm terrified

I'm terra-fied

I'm tarot-fied

It's terror-ific!

but sometimes you feel like:

[sotto voce]

The Horror
The Horror

and sometimes ya don't

Could you provide an example of the type of horror we're talking? This is an interesting question, and I'd be better equipped to answer if I knew what type of horror.

for instance , if i saw an adult beating a child , i would be horrified.  if i had a robber point a gun at my head i would be terrified.  just answer to your best of your ability.  there's no wrong answer here. :)

It's an interesting distinction between the words, which you have explained very very well.
The use of the word horror, pertaining to the motion picture genre (which examples given are usually just made to be terrifying, according to your definitions), has colored that word for many of us with the popular culture frame of reference.

I'd certainly have to agree with you, terror is better than horror, in terms of actual experience.

Thanks for clarifying.
Ok - there are two instances where I'd rather be terrified. Watching a family member suffer terribly or being confronted by a chicken are horrors too unspeakable for words.

But normally, I'd rather be horrified. Horror can be delicious provided it is uncommon and fascinating.

Well, fortunately all my troubles with the fowl beasts have been with the non-confrontational variety.

Just let one come up to me and start some stuff, boy

I eat chickens for breakfast

Your response got me curious and I found out there is a website dedicated to compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl www.upc-online.org  personally I like chickens for lunch or dinner, yummy!

Horrified. After the first reaction one can quickly respond intelligently to deal with the situation. When terrified the mind shuts down, the limbs go out of control, one's reactions are slowed, and response is even slower. It takes practice to learn to discard terror quickly, and then deal with whatever caused it.
The laws of God, the laws of man, He may keep that will and can; Not I. Let God and man decree Laws for themselves and not for me; And if my ways are not as theirs Let them mind their own affairs. - A. E. Housman

I think the movie Appcolypse Now answers that question quite nicely. Even though the young Captain Willard saw images one more terrifying than the next, it was horror of war that finally drove Cournel Kurtz insane.

Horrified.  Many things that cause us to be horrified also galvanize us into helpful action for ourselves and humankind.
