ySan Diego County is the third largest egg-producing county in the nation. The 114 poultry ranches in San Diego, with more than six million chickens, do a $50-million-per-year business. Egg kingpin Julius Goldman founded the world's largest egg ranch here in Southern California, ruffling a few feathers along the way.
At its peak in the 1970s and '80s, Egg City produced 2 million eggs a day, laid by 3.5 million hens. It also exuded a major stink that offended noses in much of Ventura County.
