QuoteA Series of Questions explores the power dynamics inherent in the questions asked of transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, and gender-variant people.

Many documentary photographic projects that deal with trans issues exploit the genders of their subjects, pointing to an "otherness" or inappropriately exoticizing their bodies. This project seeks instead to make visible the transphobia and gender-baiting that can become part of everyday interactions and lives, forming a fuller picture of the various lived experiences.

QuoteWhat is this exactly?

I am photographing people who have been on the receiving end of transphobic and gender-baiting questions. Participants are photographed holding a wooden sign (provided) of a question they've personally been asked.

Discord, I'm howlin' at the moon
And sleepin' in the middle of a summer afternoon
Discord, whatever did we do
To make you take our world away?

Discord, are we your prey alone,
Or are we just a stepping stone for taking back the throne?
Discord, we won't take it anymore
So take your tyranny away!

What's gender-baiting?

I could be wrong, but I think it's the assumption that you're pretending to be the other gender. Like the stereotype of transsexuals "tricking" people.

If someone has a real definition of gender-baiting, I'd be curious to hear it.
