Deed Pole - How many legal copies did you order?

Hi everyone,

I just got my Deed Pole through and I ordered 10 legal copies (cost £1 each). I have until tomorrow to order more, or to pay to have my deed pole archived. After this the record is lost. However to buy another 10 copies now is over £20 more. :(

Do you think I need more than 10?  How likely are places to return it if you ask them and enclose a SAE?

Thanks,

Matt

Hey Matt,

Firstly, congrats on the name change! I think it depends on your age and how many people you're going to need to contact. I only ordered 5 and I've found that's enough for me as I'm only 18 so don't have too many people to notify. My bank and doctors just took a photocopy of it and updated their records and a couple of other organisations were happy for me to scan it through on an email. Most companies are happy to return it if you include a SAE as far as I'm aware. I phoned everybody first to make sure they send it back. To be perfectly honest, I think you'll be fine with 10, but like I said it depends on how many people you need to tell. It's worth noting that most organisations will send it back or just take a photocopy (they need to do the photocopy though, you can't send one yourself). If you're worried you can archive it for a much lower cost and just order some more in the future if you need to. That's what I ended up doing but so far my 5 have been enough. Another good thing about archiving it rather than ordering more legal copies at the moment is it stays in their database for 20 years.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I hope it works out whatever you decide to do :)

Hey thanks Joey, I might try and stick with 10 copies but archive it so I know I can get more if needed.

I do have a lot to get changed over, as I am a home owner, and also have business and personal bank accounts with different banks, a lease on business premises, then there's Inland Revenue and all my utility bills etc, etc. I think I counted nearly 20 thing I'd need to get changed. Hopefully most will return them. Some of these I can do in person, so I can ask them to take a copy and give me back the legal copy.

Thanks again :)

No worries mate. Yeah you may have to archive it then. To be honest, the deed poll people always say 'Please note some organisations may not return your deed poll' but I think it's just a way to scare you and get more money off you :P I still have 5 left and I've changed my name everywhere I needed to. Nobody so far has kept it. If you have a lot of companies to inform I think your best bet is to archive it or maybe just order 5 more copies. If you've gone with the same company as me I think it's an extra £11.50?

That's good to know that most people DO return it, thanks.

I archived it, which was £8.50 or something, just to be safe.

Thanks :)

Right, off to one of my banks to tell them :D
