Transgender Woman Dies After Assault in Harlem: Police
NBC News, August 22, 2013

The death of a transgendered woman who was assaulted by a group of men in Harlem Saturday night is being investigated as a possible hate crime, police say.

The 21-year-old woman, Islan Nettles, who also goes by Vaughn Nettles and Alon Nettles, was out with a friend, another transgender woman, when they met a group of men near 148th Street and Eighth Avenue, according to police.

The two groups began arguing, apparently after the men realized the victims were transgender, police said. One man made anti-gay remarks and a physical altercation ensued.

*TRIGGER WARNING*
Embarking on a New Life, Transgender Woman Has It Brutally Taken
MICHAEL SCHWIRTZ, The New York Times, September 8, 2013

The transformation of Islan Nettles over the last year was something her friends and relatives discussed with barely concealed awe.

After years of often being hungry and on the verge of homelessness, Ms. Nettles, 21, had recently moved into her own apartment, found a job at an H & M clothing store and was designing her own fashion line.

Most important, she had begun to live publicly as transgender. Seemingly overnight, friends and relatives said, she had metamorphosed from a shy and insecure youth into a radiantly confident young woman.

And then she was killed.

Transgender Woman Dies in a Possible Hate Crime
Alan Feuer, NY Times, August 23rd

A transgender woman attacked last weekend in Harlem has died in a case the police said they were now investigating as a hate crime after learning that the man accused of hitting her may have used antigay epithets.

Ms. Nettles was walking with a group of transgender friends on Frederick Douglass Boulevard between 147th and 148th Streets when they encountered several men across the street.

When the men concluded Ms. Nettles and her friends were transgender, a scuffle broke out, the police said, with punches thrown and homophobic slurs shouted.
A spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office, Ellen Borakove, said on Friday that the death had been ruled a homicide and the cause was "blunt force trauma."

"It made us all a little shaken," she said. "The community here is strong, but being transgendered can be dangerous. There's still intolerance. There's still a stigma around it."

State Senator Daniel L. Squadron, the Senate sponsor of a bill called the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act, or Genda, said in a statement on Friday: "Islan was 21 years old — 21 years old. And her life and future were stolen from her. Let's be clear: intolerance, discrimination and hate have no place in New York or anywhere. Each outrage is another call: It's time for New York to send that message loudly and clearly by finally passing Genda."

Rest in Peace Islan

*TRIGGER WARNING*
Islan Nettles Murder Case Becomes Increasingly Complicated As Investigators Appeal To Public
Murray Weiss, The Huffington Post via DNA Info, 09/16/2013 10:18 am EDT

Frustrated investigators trying to solve the beating death of a transgendered Harlem woman are appealing to the public for help in a case that is becoming increasingly complicated, DNAinfo New York has learned.

"The death of Islan Nettles, a young transgender woman who was assaulted in Harlem last month and later died of her injuries, is a tragedy," said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. as he asked "anyone with information" to contact his Hate Crimes Unit hotline at 212 335 3100.

The unusual entreaty came as prosecutors prepare to present evidence to a grand jury to determine if suspect Paris Wilson, 20, should face murders charges in Nettles' death.

"In what appears to be another anti-gay hate crime, an elderly man was stabbed to death in broad daylight Monday . . . in [ ] Queens — the latest in an outbreak of anti-LGBT hate crimes the city has seen in recent months, including the beating death of a transgender woman, Islan Nettles, Aug. 23 and a gay man, Mark Carson, who was fatally shot May 18 just blocks away from the historic Stonewall Inn."

Advocates call it a "disturbing trend", and that they usually don't see more than one per year in the city.

Vicious killing of transgendered woman Islan Nettles remains unsolved
Shayna Jacobs, October 4th

The vicious fatal beating of a transgendered woman in Harlem remains unsolved as authorities try to sort out clashing accounts of the tragedy, it was revealed in court Friday.

The first suspect, Paris Wilson, 20, was arrested for misdemeanor assault after he was identified as the person who punched Islan Nettles, 21, repeatedly in the face as he and a group of friends allegedly threw slurs at the victim early on Aug. 17.

Nettles later died at the hospital and Wilson was freed on $2,000 bail.

But after his arrest, an unidentified man turned himself in and took the blame for the crime. Authorities are still vetting evidence on both sides.

The man "came forward to the police and claimed to be responsible for the crime," Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Viorst told the judge at a brief court appearance in Wilson's case Friday.

"Since then, the DA's office and the NYPD have been working vigorously on the case," he added.
