Lawyer fights for sex change rights
SANDEEP SINGH GREWAL, September 15, 2013

A LAWYER has pledged to fight for the rights of five Bahrainis who are seeking sex changes.

Fowzia Janahi said her clients, three women and two men, suffer from Gender Identity Disorder (GID), also known as gender dysphoria, and feel they are "trapped in the wrong body".

She is waiting for doctors to issue medical reports before filing a case at a Bahraini court to legally change their sex.

Ms Janahi, who is the only Arab lawyer specialising in transsexual cases in the region, has already gone to the High Civil Court on behalf of two other Bahraini women seeking sex changes.

She says people suffering from the disorder struggle as they are subjected to daily criticism.

She told the GDN she has been bombarded with phone calls from people in Bahrain and abroad seeking help.
