I used to play Ultima Online when it was the only game around... I played a female character, and found myself able to express myself and portray myself very effectively.  Everquest, WoW, even avatars on non-connected games can help, if you choose to use them.

And of course, Second Life.  A number of people that I know got their start in getting comfortable with their true gender online. 

Your mileage may vary... for some it's great, for others it doesn't help at all, or only a little.  Second Life is free, though, and would be a great way to find out for yourself.

When I played any kind of game, I was always a chick. My friends eventually got a clue. 

It is difficult to find any female characters on GuildWars 2 that are female.  Escaping is nice but manifesting is incredible.

I am not familiar with either one of those.  I have always been female over the phone and in yahoo chat rooms and groups.

This is the only forum I am on (aside from Laura's Playground) where I don't pretend I am someone else. Other places, i have a friend who lets me pretend to be her... pics and everything. Nothing sexual, mostly her holding up stuff I made (guitars, crafts, etc.)

I LARP as well. I love it because it lets me go through the motions of wearing anything I want before finally settling on a style of my own.

Any video game where I have the option to be female I do. Virtually any game such as Skyrim, Guild Wars 2, Diablo 3, Dragon Quest 9, Saint's Row (series), etc... I've played so many games over the years, I've lost track. I really can only role play in the real world when no one is home. I've been slowly incorporating feminine stuff into my public wardrobe. I'm almost at the point where I can't dress up more in public without giving anything away. I would eventually like to be able to share this with someone in the real world but that will have to wait till I move out.

BTW in Guild Wars 2, I got a female Necromancer and female Elementalist. Haven't played it in a while cause someone in my guild wanted to get more serious than I was willing or had time for. Haven't played much since.

I've been a female online since I barely started puberty, started off in Toontown. All of my characters were female.  Then, I played UO, female character. Same for EQ, though I did make a male froglok named Kribbert. I just liked the name. *shrug*  Then WoW, female characters.  Aaaaand now, just look at my avatar pic. xD

I've been Alexandria since I was really little. My parents knew about me doing that the whole time- but they assumed I was just being an obsessive boy with surging hormones. I guess whatever makes them more comfortable is the first assumption! 

Even outside of games I'm a story writer and I draw, most if not all of my characters are female.  I can't seem to feel like I get male characters right in a first person perspective.  I do draw males though.

I second Emily's SL - its were I've been living as a female online for 9+ years. Plus it does have really good roleplay sims, since you can pretty much be anything and build anything!
