So tonight alone i pulled out ten or more ingrown hairs from one leg alone. I really need some help on how to prevent them.
So far i have tried shaving before a shower, at the end of a shower, 3 blades, 4 blades and 5 blades, lotions costing 1.00 to lotions costing $20 a bottle, body wash, conditioner, sensitive skin shaving creams, shaving gels, mens shave cream and gels, shaving daily, shaving every other dayday....im so effing desperate right now ill try anything next to not shaving my legs.

Thanks in advance
Kari.

Used to get ingrown hairs when I was keeping the hair actually. They were a major nuisance.

Since I have been shaving though, well no hair means nothing to be ingrown.

How often do you shave? Me I rarely go a day without shaving. I mean it takes time, but then it only takes a few minutes all the same. I go through razors fast enough, but it is hardly a major expense.

I shave aggressively and both with and against the grain, in fact I just shave aggressively as a whole. Likely removing dead skin nicely and as such, my legs are usually rather smooth :)

I get the occasional pimple, but people get those with or without hair based issues too. Over all though, ingrown hair is a non problem. It isn't around long enough to get to be a problem.

Have you tried something like Nair or Neet to name a couple of brands of cream removal method? It might be worth the try.
Well being TG is no treat, but becoming separated has sure caused me more trouble that being TG ever will be. So if I post, consider it me trying to distract myself from being lonely, not my needing to discuss being TG. I don't want to be separated a lot more than not wanting to be male looking.

When you shave your legs, are you shaving straight up in lines or side to side or haphazardly?

I shave against the grain, in nice straight...well as straight as possible....strokes, then rinse the razor and go over the area again to get any hairs i missed with the first pass.

What are you using when you shave?  Do you use soap or shaving cream?

Hmmm.  I used this shaving gel that went under the shaving cream when I started shaving my private section.  It worked wonders till my body got more used to it and I didn't really need it anymore.  Now the only time I really get ingrown hairs is that time of the month cause it gets rubbed raw from the cotton.

Get yourself a Riffi Mitt and use it every day in the shower, and before you shave. Works wonders :)

Dermatologists recommend shaving every day to avoid this problem.

Might be just that I soak in a hot bubble bath for 15 minutes while relaxing....and then I shave face and by the time I am even shaving legs they have been in moisturizer saturated hot water for 20 minutes. By moisturizer saturated, I mean I use soap meant for this purpose as bubble bath generating use too.

I shave without cream or gel, I just shave with the skin wet in the tub. I shave everything the play ground, the legs, underarms, face everything without cream or gel, and I have zero troubles.

Maybe showering is not ideal.

Nothing brings out the woman in me like a nice hot bubble bath. And no one can say they can't find 20 minutes to have a bath instead of a 5 minute shower.

I brought an electrolysis machine and since I got ingrown in my bikini area I went to town on that area. After zapping all of them I can say I no longer have that problem. What is kind of cool about the machine is you can insert the needle into an ingrown hair and it will in many cases zap that little thing and make it easy to get out.

Antibacterial gel afterwards helps me loads. I simply don't shave certain areas if I don't have it nearby. Certain shops should also sell aftershave gels made for shaving your private parts, but they also work great on other parts of your body (I very easily get pimples when I shave my face but antibac helps loads).

Combined with a SHARP razor, I use the Gilette something-something for men (I never use the one for women anymore as the blades seems to wear out much quicker. Got this tip from a friend and I'm never going back to the ones for women) and a good peeling creme (MD Formulations body scrub is great, I hate hate chunky peels and the ones with seeds and stuff that never really works). :)

...people take 5 minute showers?  This is a thing? XD

I'm more shocked about 20 minute baths!!!! ;D

Consider switching shaving for another hair removal method, such as waxing. For me, it helps drastically. It depends on your skin. Some people get tons of ingrowns from shaving and fewer from waxing. For others, it's the contrary. You should probably try both.

Also, for preventing ingrown hairs, your best bet is probably a good exfoliating glove that you use twice a week. It's not perfect, but making sure you clear out as much dead skin as you can (and there's a lot, probably - when I do mine after neglecting it for a couple of weeks, generally there'll be "crumbs" like when you rub an eraser on paper, and tons of them).

If that's not enough, I'd suggest a chemical exfoliating lotion/liquid. Personally, Life Brand's "dual action acne lotion" with salicyclic acid (the key ingredient - a BHA I think) works rather well. Using it on my face has drastically improved my skin, too.

If all else fails, well... If you laser it all off, chances are that there won't be as many ingrowns. :p

I have found a scrub such as apricot scrub can really reduce ingrowns. I am a bit disappointed that back of leg and butt ingrown hairs continue to plague me, it's bad enough for me to consider lasering the back of my legs and be done with em. I'll have to figure if it's worth the $800 or so to zap that area  considering it's cover 99% of the year.(pretty much except when swimming or with my SO.)
