Global anti-gay crusader Scott Lively announced Monday that he will run for governor of Massachusetts in a statement published on his website. [He is known for his] role in the creation of Uganda's infamous "Kill the Gays" bill.

[In a statement he said:] The people of this state need a candidate who can clearly and unapologetically articulate Biblical values without fear or compromise. They need a candidate who will tell the simple truth that abortion is murder, and homosexuality is condemned by God (but that Jesus forgives and heals those who repent). [. . . ] The Mass Republican Party is solidly controlled by moderate to liberal "progressives" and the Democrats are virtual communists. They both embrace and champion the culture of death. With these two liberal parties splitting the liberal vote, a true conservative independent could win the governorship.

Look at how the political system in Lawrence has been hijacked, and it doesn't seem so unlikely. I don't think he could take the State, but a localized poulation, sure.

Oh yes, I can definitely see him getting some votes, probably more votes than I'd expect, but he won't be able to take the state. I am also guessing that he doesn't even plan on winning, it's just a way for him to get more attention to his message.

Why are American politicians allowed to even run for office when their religious beliefs are clearly going to be pushed onto the people and possibly affect laws?

I thought that there was a separation of Church and State in the US?

Something the fundies like to ignore. They treat the first amendment as "Oh so we have freedom of religion, so we're free to bring it into the government and destroy all other religions then!"

Lol judging by what he says, he clearly doesn't read the Bible, but I will leave tha talk for the religion section.  Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Mass. one of the first states to legalize gay marriage?  I remember seeing it in the news paper when I was in middle school.  If my memory serves correct then my response to this is Hahahahahahaha yeah, good luck winning in that state.

EDIT; got it wrong, it was in 2003, and was the second state after Hawaii to legalize. November 3rd is the 15th anniversary of the beginning of legal same sex marriage in the US.

It was actually the first, IIRC. I remember reading it in the paper in 7th grade.
Jeez, that was 6 years ago.
Ironically, it was Romney who signed it into law.

Yeah I thought it Mass was the first one to do so because that following weekend our preacher talked about us being in the last days because of that then.  Gosh I feel so old lol  I can remember being up in the morning about to get ready for school and there was this huge picture of happy gay couples that could marry.  I'm feel grandpa.

See edited post.
I don't know why it was in the paper in '07, but I do remember that it had to do with two women, 84 and 82, getting married. Maybe it was the first lesbian marriage in Massachusetts or something.

Memory vs wiki. I was younger back then, and didn't fully understand what was going on, I'll trust wiki.

I'm so glad the USA exists, otherwise the rest of the world would have to create another country to send all the loony bigots too

A joke my friends, a joke

Massachusetts was the first to give full marriage (VT was the first to give civil unions) because of the Goodridge decision decided by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

But NH was the first to legalize through the legislature rather than through the courts. I take a certain pride in knowing that elected representatives were responsible here. I feel like it's a nice reflection on the general population of NH.
