To be honest, I know very little about his music.  I remember "lulu" and "walk on the wild side", but not much more than that.  I do know the song "heroin", but that song doesn't evoke positive feelings for me.  Nonetheless, I'm sorry to see him go.  I'll have to check out more of him and the Velvet Underground because many seem to speak highly of his work.

I liked his music but I hate to think that one his last projects was that disastrous collaboration with Metallica, "LuLu". That record was horrid.

I will just remember Lou for his great songs and there were many of them. Here are just a couple. Rest In Peace, Lou.

Lulu is comedy gold.  "I am the table".

Here's my favourite Lou tune. Lyrics have a new meaning today.

Satellite's gone
up to the skies
Thing like that drive me
out of my mind

I watched it for a little while
I like to watch things on TV

Satellite of love
satellite of love
Satellite of love
satellite of

Satellite's gone
way up to Mars
Soon it will be filled
with parking cars

I watch it for a little while
I love to watch things on TV

Satellite of love
satellite of love
Satellite of love
satellite of

I've been told that you've been bold
with Harry, Mark and John
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday to Thursday
with Harry, Mark and John

Satellite's gone
up to the skies
Thing like that drive me
out of my mind

I watched it for a little while
I love to watch things on TV

Satellite of love

The Velvet Underground are still one of my favorite bands to listen to.  Nothing in the 60s sounded like them.  They were truly unique.  RIP Lou.

Kia Ora,

Prior to transitioning (back in the days of the closet), when hearing  "Walk on the wild side" would put my brain into a spin... For some strange reason it always seemed to play as I walked into a place of social gathering like a cafe or bar (I'm talking about back in the old days) ...It was quite uncanny...as if it was my theme song...

I too mourn the passing of a great entertainer...He's now walking on the wild(unknown) side of life...

Yes I had a similar experience with this song and Lola.

Kia Ora Paige,

The Kinks song about Lola is ambiguous ,  " Well, I'm not the world's most muscular man,
But I know what I am I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola!
Does he mean he thinks Lola is also a man or Lola is glad he 'is' a man ?

I posted Lou Reeds 'Walk on the wild side' video clip a while back just though some members would like to know "the story behind the music and what became of the grand circus of flamboyant characters"

Well that's interesting, I've never thought of it that way.  I always heard it as Lola is a man.   I think I might have heard an interview with Ray Davies years ago talking about the origins of the song and never thought there was another way of interpreting it.

Anyway here's a quote from Wikipedia.

In the book The Kinks: The Official Biography, Davies said that he was inspired to write this song after the band manager Robert Wace had spent the night dancing with a transvestite. Davies said,

In his apartment, Robert had been dancing with this black woman, and he said, 'I'm really onto a thing here.' And it was okay until we left at six in the morning and then I said, 'Have you seen the stubble?' He said 'Yeah,' but he was too pissed [intoxicated] to care, I think.
