My dad didn't even know we're descended from Norwegians until he started looking into it because he didn't know much either. Unfortunately, my dad is not someone I feel like having a chat with. Actually, I've only heard stories of the past three generations (mine, my parents', and my grandparents). In other words, the only "ancestors" I really know anything about are people who want nothing to do with their parents. I wonder how far that pattern goes back. Maybe that's why I know next to nothing about my ancestors. I'm not too keen on the idea of honouring the ones I know about. I wonder if he judges me for my lack of ancestral knowledge.
Which is why I guess I'd make a lousy pagan. Thank goodness I decided to just do whatever.

I was helping a little Japanese woman construct a raised bed herb garden when she informed me that we North Americans are all a mongrel people because we have no idea about our ancestral chain beyond a few generations. I thought it a bit rude at first, but had to concede that she is right. She made up to me by fixing a nice Asian style lunch and sent me home with a new rice cooker.

My daughter is driving to a final exam in a bad snowstorm with accidents all around her. I hope she makes it there and back Ok. She drives normally about 2 hours each way and much longer today.

Believe me I am. I told her I am calling this afternoon, (when she should be done) and checking on her. This is one of those where not going is justified to me. Many colleges don't agree.

"Mongrel" is an offensive term for people of mixed descent. You have every right to be offended by that. Speaking from an evolutionary standpoint, being mixed is a good thing since there is a greater diversity of alleles in the gene pool. If that makes sense.
In any case, I know plenty of people who know beyond a few generations. The reason I don't is because my family has a pattern of not wanting to talk to the previous generation for some very good reasons despite what people keep telling me.

I don't get my emotional panties in a wad over being called a mongrel, I understood her intent and it clearly wasn't offensive. But you are right for wanting to distance yourself from toxic family members. I had to do the same for a ten year period until they apologized and changed their attitudes. You don't need any more anxiety than you already have in your life.

I've seen mongrel used both offensively and affectionately. I figure most of us are mutts to a point.
