Long nails and guitar just don't mix.  The Orianthi post above is dead on - all girls know this.  It's possible to have killer nails without them being long, plus unless you have delicate hands (more power to you if you do) I think long nails tend to look out of place.

Side note: I registered to reply to this thread. =)

Short nails, well kept, can be very cute too. :D

I play guitar some for personal enjoyment.

Here's some good info from James Taylor.

Couldn't get myself to cut them today.  I'm just going to wait until I break one on the left hand and even them up before I get my shred on.

Orianthi is so awesome, BTW.  She gave me her guitar pick when I was 2nd row for Alice Cooper this year, as my wife and I were the only women in the vicinity.  The good thing about sausagefest concerts though is no waiting for the bathrooms.

In other news, I found my brass and glass slides and plugged in my keyboard today...

For those who are unfamiliar with him, this is Don Ross. He wears acrylics on both hands, classical length on the right hand and short on the left. If I could afford to maintain it, this is probably the way I'd go.

I looked after my nails much more when I was playing regularly

I'd keep my fingering hand nails rather short so it would be easier to play and so I wouldn't cut my fingers up catching them with the nails

I'd let the nails on my picking hand grow but they'd never get very long because they would get worn down from playing  :)

I don't play as much now, but I'll trim them down when I do play

I went out one day and had my nails done professionally but realised a few days later I can't play my guitar with those nails. I then tried to cut them which was very difficult as they were hardened on with very strong adhesive. In the end over time they eventually broke off and I was able to play my guitar again.

It was also a nightmare to try and do other basic chores with those nails. So from now on no more nail extensions for me.

My complaint is I chip the polish off my thumb and index finger on my picking hand! I guess I strike the strings when picking.

I absolutely can not have any nails on my fretting hand. I've gotten so used to very short nails that I hate how they feel when they get long enough to touch things. Lol it's like chewing on aluminum foil or scratching your nails on a black board.

It's a pain.  You cannot have your nails too long on your fretting hand as you won't get enough pressure for the note to sound clearly.  finger picking rips your nails to bits.  I use a thumb pick and you can get banjo picks for your right fingers.  Alternatively, a nylon stringed (classical guitar) will have less of an effect than a steel stringed guitar.

I play bass too, and keep them short only right hand. Some bass players like to have a little bit of nail to hit the string, but when I want that tone I use a pick. When I play with a pick I strike the string with part of my index finger, and there goes the polish! :)
