The old name just keeps popping up...

I went to buy something and used PayPal to transmit the funds.

That's when I noticed my account was still in the name of [---].

I tried to change it on the website.  No dice.

I then went through a nasty phone maze that used voice recognition.  It took quite a bit of time to finally get it to cough up the path to a human.

Then I had to give them the name on the account.

Then I had to explain what I wanted.  This really flustered the callcenter 'droid.

Even after I explained I'd changed my name and gender, the 'droid still kept calling me 'sir' until I corrected him -- twice.  Then he over-ma'am'ed me the rest of the conversation.

I wonder what he'll tell his buddies tonight over a 12-pack?

Addendum:  Getting to the correct page is involved, but once you navigate the webpage maze, there's a page where you upload an imagefile of your document or license or other proof that you've really had a name change.  The assumption is the 'droids look at the picture, are satisfied, and they make the change.

Here are the instructions:

QuoteYou can change the name on your account only for a typographical error or a legal name change. We cannot change account ownership (your name to another person's name), for security reasons.

To submit a name change, please submit a request through our secure form.

   1.  Log in to your account at https://www.paypal.com/.

   2.  Click the "Contact Us" link.

   3.  Click "Contact Customer Service."

   4.  In the "Choose a Topic" box, select "My Account Profile." In the "Choose a Subtopic" box, select "Name Change."

   5.  Click "Continue."

   6.  Select the type of name change you would like to make and click "Continue."

   7.  Follow the online instructions.

You can upload the requested files or fax the cover sheet along with the requested documents. Since uploaded files are received almost instantly and electronically attached to the claim details, our agent can review your claim more quickly. Faxed documents are reviewed in the order they are
received and generally require 3-5 business days for the review process to be completed. Occasionally a longer time period is required, for instance if the fax is illegible or pages are missing.

Great post Karen.  But you have to realize that the "droid" will be telling it's buddies about this wonderful woman it was so fortunate to meet on line today and how gracious she was.

Was there ever any doubt :)

I have kind of a similar problem getting all the stuff switched over at Purdue.  They were really quick about some things, but apparently most of their systems are not connected in any way, as when I went to scan my ID card to buy some software the old name popped up, even though its been changed in the admissions/housing/student ID system.

Which reminds me I need to hassle them some more about that...  >:D

When I had a paypal account all I did was delete it and recreate it with the new info. After a few people I knew told me the horror stories they had with the service, I dumped it completely.

I just signed up with a completely new account.  I was using a new email address and everything anyhow.  I think I had created it even before legally changing my name.  I still use it from time to time.

Speaking of the old name popping up, I went to go return a tool I got on the autozone tool loan program and get my deposit back.  I must not have realized it when I picked up the tool, but my old name came up on the receipt.  I told them that wasn't my name and they were like: "That doesn't really matter ma'am" and I just left it at that.  Oh well.  I just say that's not my name because it isn't.  Most people don't even consider it may have been an old name.

those kind of errors come up enough it actually does work as a way to kind of drop the subject

That's a common experience.  Schools don't seem to do a very good job of integrating their computer systems.  It took three months to get my school straightened out.  The worst was either the problems with the "Desire to Learn" software, or the fact that the business office had my classes under my new name, but my payments under my old name.  My class registration was cancelled three times for nonpayment.

Everything is changed now... except my student log in name and email address.  On the day-on-campus I filled out a form to get it changed, but apparently they lost it.  So now I can't get it changed until I move in because they require an ID when I fill the form out  >:(

I finally got around to changing my name on one of my bartending licenses today.  I can't believe I waited so long.  I've driven right by the building at least a dozen times this past year.  I still need to change the other one, which just requires mailing in a form.

Karen....that's as far as I got before saying "to heck with it" (yeah, right), and created a new account under the name Beverly Michelle _______ .

I could see right away it was going to be much less energy and frustration.

I guess I was lucky with PayPal. I found the instructions (I don't know how), followed them exactly, and it changed over smoothly. My old name popped up, however, in of all places a doctor's examining room. I am full time and I changed my ID with my HMO months ago, but for some reason the old name turned up on a very recent CT scan, which is displayed using the computer in the room and special software. So far nobody knows where that name is stored or how it got there; I am still trying to have them fix it.

The reason for that scan is a story for another forum. I will just say that given the reason for my being there, the doctor was not surprised at what my old name was. That is some small relief, I guess.
