Is it safe to use a debit card at Target now?

It's probably as safe as any other store at this point.

If you shopped during the period they were hacked, you need to get new bank accounts and credit cards issued. Even then, you're exposed to identity theft for other accounts thieves may open in your name. I would sign up for a service like Lifelock to protect yourself.

This was sent to me in email from target. I have a redcard thru them.

•We are offering free credit monitoring for one year to every single person who was impacted by this crime. We will give you more information about that soon.

It says everyone, but it was sent out to redcard patrons. Another thing I read was it's easier to cover unauthorized card charges on credit card. The article said debit cards had shorter deadlines to report theft. It's a bit vague hope it helps tho.

I did change my debit card but I didn't think it was necessary to get another account.

I don't think you have to change the account itself.  Just the debit card's number.  At least, that's what I had thought.

To be honest, they probably have boasted their security, but it's made me lose faith in their abilities.  Most stores are probably just as susceptible to this kind of thing anyway.  This is why I preach using cash or gift cards in place of your credit or debit.  I've been a victim of ID theft so I know how much it sucks.  If you were a victim, you have my condolences because people don't know just how much it sucks to go through this.

Call your bank and get a new debit card sent. Pay recurring things by paypal to avoid having to change your information every time this happens... because it's dumb.
