On Friday, I will be leaving my summer job and taking two weeks off before I head back to college at the end of the month.

This will be a very emotional time for me in my transition, probably more emotional than any other time thus far.  When I'm done with work, I will begin my RLE.  I will be dressing and presenting in my female role 24/7, and I hope everything works out.

I don't know if I'll have my name changed anytime soon, because of finances, but I'm going to go full-time because I feel I'm ready, even though I still have male ID.  I updated my DL photo and appear feminine in the photo, so I will have to hope for the best if the need to present ID ever comes up.

I'm really anxious and nervous as hell, and I know once I get through the first few weeks I'll be OK, but until then it feels like I'm walking on glass.  I'll go out putting forth as much confidence as I can.  It's bound to be interesting.

Wish me luck  :)

Good luck! I'm in the same boat as you, as I move in to my apartment this Saturday, have a week of orientation stuff, then start my classes on the 20th.  First time I've been back in school since I've gone full time, so it should be veeeeeeeeeerrrrrry interesting!  Hope everything works out wonderfully for you  :icon_hug:

I wish you the best of luck Kat, since we're in the same boat.  I can't remember, did you manage to get your name changed though?

Good luck Fae,

One of the constant things in all our lives is change, it is difficult to handle at times but part of moving our lives forward.

Sometimes I want to just fast forward and have everything done (name change, orchi, etc) but then I shouldn't wish my life away, you know?

It's entirely possible to change your name legally without a lawyer.  Look into it.  The costs would be minimal... a court fee and a couple ads in the newspaper.  It varies from state to state.

I also thought like that Fae, it can be bloody depressing at times going through transition and to just fast forward to the end would be a wonderful thing.

BUT ... I actually learned a lot about myself, my hidden strengths and my resolve during that period, so it can be frustrating and at times depressing, but part of a process that leads to self discovery...

Yeah, dont wish your life away, just learn to accept its changing and good times will eventually come.

Good luck.  Don't wish your life away, learn to enjoy the good parts of it and that should help you through any bad ones.

It's looking like I will have to do it without a lawyer because I'm in a financial bind right now.  I'm gonna have to just do it and get it done because I'll need it eventually, and the sooner the better.

Would you recommend mentioning gender identity as the reason why, or something else?  I'm thinking of putting "Birth name conflicts with gender identity" and having my therapist or general doctor write a letter for me to present in court.  Either way, I'm presenting as female in court.

Also thinking of requesting exemption of the publication requirement.  Here in NY state, the personal safety of the applicant can override the publication requirement.

Some states let you ask to waive fees, if you can show financial hardship.  It can't hurt to try.

OK...I finally got somewhere.

Called the county clerk again.  Actually had someone talk to me instead of feeding me that "we don't provide legal advise..." line.  I found out what documents I will need to go and fill out at that office, how many copies, and then I pay for a index number, submit everything, and wait for a court date.  Hopefully will be doing that this week.

Also found some generic forms I can use for my petition and order from the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, they're a group out of NYC that helps transgender advocacy, I think they're a non-profit organization.

Here's the link to where I found the forms.  They're for NYC but they look generic enough that they can  probably be used anywhere in NY without a problem, for anyone else in NY who is also looking into this:
