So I decided while I waiting to see a therapist, perhaps I could start on my voice as it costs nothing but time. Therefore I added a quick voice recording to get advice. Please be constructive and honest as I want to start on the right foot now. Thank you :)

Any GOOD videos with good exercises I can do?

A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting

There is no one here where I live who does voice coaching sadly, so I am going to be stalking the forum a lot for advice :(

Hi Sarah

It kind of surprises me that so few people come over to this sub forum when the voice is so central to our communication and the voice you use can gender you so quickly.

Like you I'm kind of stumbling around in the dark when it comes to finding a female voice, and like you I've tried the youtube stuff and done the google searches. I practice when I have time, but I don't know what I sound like anymore. Maybe we can help each other out.

I had a listen to your sound clip.  I'm no expert but I'll tell you what I hear. I think the pitch is approaching borderline female range. Your intonation range is quite wide and expressive, and this adds a feminine aspect to your speech. I do think I pick up chest resonances in your voice which is a very male way to speak. For a more feminine voice (as I understand it) you need to manipulate your voice box so that you speak more from the throat and head to tame this resonance.

I haven't been able to do that consistently well. Hey-ho...

There was a thread recently on a 'shortcut to a female voice' which you might try looking out.

Anyway, after ten minutes' practice it's more than a good start! :)

I really wouldn't try practicing by reading passages like that. I think a better way is to try and speak in general conversation mode instead, whether that be practicing with a friend by just conversing with each other, or act as if you're recording a video or something and just talk about something. That'll give you more opportunity to throw in different inflections and stuff along with trying to raise the pitch and add in resonance.

From what I can hear, you still have a lot of that low, guttural sound in your voice when you're speaking in your feminine voice, so it might help to be a bit softer when you speak, with a bit more breathiness (but not too much). Also, because you're just reading passages, the inflections tend to sound robotic and jump from low to high to low to high, with no slope at all. You may want to try raising your pitch a bit more too, especially in the beginning, and then slowly come down as you get more and more comfortable using a higher pitch.

Keep practicing and you'll get there! Good luck!
